Now I knew I was going to see 3 proficient musicians, but I wasn't sure what kind of a concert to expect as I'd only heard some samples from http://www.tiac.net/users/jonfinn/ The concert explored at least Classical, Jazz, Rock and Blues. This guy has some serious chops, folks!!! He was all over the place while, at the same time, being completely in sync with the tune. The bass player and drummer, as well as Jon, are on the faculty at Berklee. Nuff said? I think not... They played some heavier stuff for the first couple of tunes, all progressive and all with plenty of insane shredding and rhythm changes that forced you to pay attention! Then they got into some rather intense stuff that I'd say was in the relam of fusion, but they'd go to each extreme of both jazz and rock. Jon had to re-tune several times between songs joking about changing strings right before the concert and the lack of a locking trem. It was a musician thing :) He has great stage presence! Made the audience feel right at home (even though it WAS HOME for most of the students in the audience :) The bass player has a new disc out. Jon mentions being fortunate enough to play on a couple of tracks. He urges the audience to be on the lookout for this disc. I must agree. All you bass players out there, GET IT. I couldn't tell what brand of bass it was, but it had a buttload of strings on it :) The drummer was out of his fucking mind! He had one bass drum but with one of those double pedal rigs with the second pedal near the high hat. And with a 750-holley double pumper set of legs, he'd be playing it sometimes along with the high-hat. What an incredible sense of rhythm this guy has!! He made so much come out of a simple kit; and equally important, so little come out on a couple of the slower pieces. Oh yeah, he had another gig later that night :) After a few more songs, Jon introduces a fellow musician (sorry, forgot his name) who sits down at the piano and does a beautiful piece entitled "Precious Things" as the bassist and drummer leave the stage for a break. The guy is not in the band but is quite talented enough to stay on stage for the rest of the show! And he does :) There's a song they're doing which features the piano heavily (you listening Damon? ) and Jon just looks over to the guy and non-verbally indicates that he should keep the solo going for a little longer. Love it!! He moved over to stage-left to the synthesizer setup and tore it up with the band for the remaining songs. He and Jon are trading off soloing on a song "The Fib" and just shredding the crap out of the instrument. The following is *my impression*, so don't you guitarists get too upset at it :) It sometimes appeared that Jon was actually pissed off at the instrument. He was just attacking the damn thing from every possible angle! Looked like he was thinking "Come on, Ibanez, is this all this fucking piece of wood and wires can do?" I sensed that there was so much music inside of this guy's soul waiting to come out but it was trapped due to an inherent limitation of the instrument itself. And he blew me away with the myriad of sounds that did come out of it! I urge anyone who has the means, to catch this group. Whether you're a serious musician or a serious shred enthusiast, the Jon Finn Group will not disappoint. Can you tell I enjoyed the concert? Although it took 3-4 weeks, it did get here, unlike Dream Disc, where I cancelled my order. Price was good, $24, including shipping. I'm on my first listen, so no final opinions yet, although it sounds quite good (subdued volume, as I'm listening at work). For the fellow J'Yammer who said the beginning/bridge section of DWT (the song) sounds like 'Mars' from Holst's 'The Planets', it definitely does. Besides ELP's (Powell, not Palmer) version on 'Welcome Back', this riff is also used in the beginning of one of the songs on 'tage's HotMK (or EoT?). -Randall email: email_address_removed **"I'm looking California and feeling Minnesota" from "Outshined" by Soundgarden** ------------------------------ End of YTSEJAM Digest 2475 **************************
