I'll keep this short because it's not the TON mailing list. However, I did get to meet Johnny, Josh and Peter after the show, and they were three of the nicest guys I've met. They made a lot of realy funny jokes and even sang Happy Birthday to my girlfriend. Anyway, Remember how Derek said "Why don't they just bring me their Elvis albums to sign? I didn't play on them either"? Well I felt bad because I had to get out of the house quick and forgot my October Rust CD. I did have Bloody Kisses on me, but Johnny Kelly wasn't the drummer back then. When he signed it, I asked "Don't you mind signing an album you didn't play on?" He responed with "No way. I still get paid for it!" So there you go. I'm talking about the Usenet group (groups, actually, as I'm talking more about my experience of a.m.p....I don't spend a lot of time over there now) dedicated specifically to fans of progressive music, whatever the hell that actually is. And what I'm saying is that this limited segment of a self-defining community contains a number of people who feel as though we're somehow blaspheming the word "progressive" if we apply it to Rush or Dream Theater. I would argue that both bands are well within the generally agreed upon standards of progressivity. My own personal feeling is that Soundgarden, the band that got me on this track anyhow, also might fit into some possible progressive schema. But, in defense of Usenet, I can't see a reason why we should view the opinions expressed here as having any more weight or validity. So there's that... >> who don't find Dream >> Theater a particularly progressive band, either, and think that any time >> you take a band that combines progressivity with other musical stylings >> (Pink Floyd, Rush, Dream Theater), you're doing a disservice to the >> concept of progressive music. > >But, but, I don't see how you can't combine it if you're going to use >the word in the musical sense. It has to be progressive genre here>, don't it? I understand its usage in the context of >describing a band as progressive ("going where no one has gone before") >but I use the word to describe the music sense Keith Emerson style Well, there certainly IS a progressive jazz, a progressive rock, a progressive metal. What's Brand X? Progressive FUSION?! What about Queensryche, who's really wandered in and out of more or less metallic sounds. I think the people I'm speaking of come from a progressive ROCK background and AREN'T really willing to describe anything METAL as progressive. It's something like the problem of crossover. COC, Iron Maiden, and Slayer all have some combination of punk and metal roots, to varying degrees. But punk music is very anti-classic rock, traditionally, where metal can be seen as having grown out of that tradition. What happens when they run into each other? And what happens when it's fusion running into death metal, like Cynic? I'm pretty liberal in applying the progressive label....I think King's X can safely be described as somewhat progressive. Maiden is a metal band, albeit with strong tendencies towards progressivity. Ozric Tentacles is progressive. "...And Justice For All" is a progressive record, in my opinion. And a healthy dose of Fusion can probably be placed somewhere is the world of prog. At its heart, I think we're talking about Yes, Genesis, ELP, and the Canterbury bands. Rush and Tull changed its shape a little. Progressive metal, I think, is a different sort of beast. Which is why I still think it's a mistake to throw out a discussion of metal and hard rock sounds here, since Dream Theater is, to my ears, as much a post-Metallica band as a post-Yes band.
