The clinics were great and the new songs are awesome! I was lucky enough to see JP and DS do there soundchecks and it was quite an experience as well. The guy that sat next to me runs a bootleg video biz and he got almost the entire thing on video. He got caught once but that didn't seem to stop him. I got his info if anyone is interested. The guy that asked the stupid questions all night was a real trip. I couldn't believe that he asked Derek to explain the modes to him right as he was leaving the stage.... He also told Petrucci that if he would have brought his bass he would have backed him up, that is when I about lost it! I guess every crowd has a few like that.... JP played a song called Sammies Nap, it was really cool and he also played the songs he did for Sega. I was also surprised when he couldn't remember the chords to pull me under....that just made him seem so much more human. This was truly a night to remember and I hope to maybe meet some list members at the next one! Untill then...... In fact, I've been dying to hear those songs lately- I don't own the album but have had it before. Slave To The Grind- the best heavy metal album of 1991. It has a very raw feel to it almost as if there was no producer to f*** it up. B-Side Ourselves- the 5 song cover EP I could've done without. While none of it was bad, I'd rather hear Skid Row playing Skid Row songs. The songs on it were Psycho Therapy (Ramones), C'Mon And Love Me - one of the outstanding tracks (KISS), Delivering The Goods- live w/ Rob Halford (Judas Priest), What Your Doing (Rush) and Little Wing (Jimi Hendrix). Subhuman Race- while this is a very heavy release, it didn't do much for me. I think it was a little too overproduced. I think Bob Rock did a horrible job on this one. Even the ballads lack in power. Working Man: Rush Tribute- Never cared for this CD in the first place and Sebastian Bach didn't impress me too much. The only song I liked was the very last one on this CD. Hope the next one is more like Slave To The Grind. Actually the people who annoyed me the most were the ones who thought prog was all hallowed and all other music as shit, and if someone mentioned a prog band they would scream "YOU RULE!!" he also didnt use the term "sold out" for anything, just stated that he didnt like it.. and he even said when someone screamed the new metallica had sold out he disagreed but just didnt dig it as much. it was also cool when he kind of poked fun at prog bands like crimson glory. he's real playful, and didnt insult any of the music, just stated his opinions as people inquired, it was real refreshing. if he could see this post, i gotta say that for his first clinic he was excellent, i hope he does more, and to anyone who's ever said he cant hold a candle to KevMo, blah! he's quite possibly the best asset to the band and the new album, lines in the sand is currently my fave new song and he's the one who partook much of its writing. good show! =) ~Rip ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 4 Apr 1997 12:41:00 -0700 From: "Vincent G. I'm totally into DT, FW, Savatage, and QR, and yet when a friend of mine let me listen to Lemur Voice, I was impressed by the talent, but the music did nothing for me. Well, my view of Derek (and I could be very mistaken) is that he's more into the metal aspect of Dream Theater than the progressive aspect. He's probably more into developing a kick-ass groove in 4/4 time than some overly-technical-so-much-that-it's-nonsense progressive piece that variates between 12/8, 5/4, 9/8, and 10/16 every 16 measures. Heck, look at the other bands he plays with. Alice Cooper. Kiss. jus' my opinion. I *choose* to count it 4/4 then 5/4 precisely *because* of what Portnoy is playing. To me, his drumming in the "4/4" measure sounds like a standard 4/= 4 beat. Then, his drumming in the "5/4" measure sounds like he's *extending* = the beat for one extra quarter note. This is why my ear hears 4/4 then 5/4.= Count it however you want, but don't claim that the way you choose to count = it is the only way. There are NOT 18 eighth notes, there are 9 eighth notes. You can tell that because the hi-hat is played on each quarter note, while making the adjustment for the extra odd note. B&G = Bass and guitar (9 eighth notes): HH = Hi hat (quarter notes) Drums (B=bass drum, s=snare drum) Mike plays the 3 variations of the hi-hat, but in each case, the HH is still playing quarter notes, while the guitar, bass, and sometimes the bass drum are playing 8th notes. This diagram depicts 2 measures, not one. This is where you were getting screwed up in your post. I love the hi-hat staying steady, which actually changes the beat on which it is played since the 9th eighth note shifts the beat of the next measure. I love it. Anyway, I think this is much more easily viewed as 9 beats per measure, rather than a measure of 4 followed by a measure of 5. It just doesn't flow that way, since the run is 9 notes long, plus switching time signature from 4/4 to 5/4 every single measure would be so troublesome to write, and forget reading it. Just my thoughts. I'm not overly trained musically, I mean I know enough to be dangerous, but I would never want to transcribe anything. Voices, and Surrounded flow much more counted in 9's rather than 5's and 4's. Seven beats per measure remains my favorite, though, due almost entirely to Dream Theater.
