The PA is always in front of you and I'm usually not lucky enough to get little tiny monitors. So what ends up happening is that you can't hear the rest of the band, so you have to focus that much harder on not screwing up. -"Oh we can only pay $500 tonight. Come back tomorrow for the other $200." This can be easily avoided. Sign a contract. Bring it to the gig and when the owner gets cute, wave it in his or her face. If the cuteness persists, refuse to play and threaten to sue. Trust me, the owners have the money. Owners rely on the noise a band makes to draw people in. No noise= no people = no money. A quick word: don't accept partial payment if you want to sue. It's all or nothing. > -Playing in the winter at clubs with no heat. Well, having played every gig in my life in L.A. this was never an issue. But here in Vermont, it's April and we've just had another storm. No they didn't, and I'm sure if they did.. there would be far > less bands out there. But if ya want to release an album and not > break contract, than ya have to satisfy the big dogs. It depends on the contract. Most do have to conform to what you're saying, but it is entirely possible that a band of Queensryche's stature has this option reduced to the delivered recordings must be satisfying from a techincal standpoint (ie. not recorded w/ a boombox in your garage) rather than an artistic standpoint, which is what you are referring to. But you never know. A quick question: I haven't heard HiTNF, but is it that hard to believe that Queensryche wanted to put out an album like this? Why are people assuming that it is the record company's fault that the album is different? Well let me clue ya in on something Doc. There will NOT be another Operation: MindCrime-esque album.. get over it, quit your bitchin and deal. The band has taken it's music forward into a different direction. So if they did infact sold-out.. then did Rush when they released Test For Echo, or did Metallica when they did Black, or how about Pearl Jam for Vitalogy, or maybe Fatez when they released Inside Out.. Hell, even DT when they released Awake.. Cause it seems by your arguement, that whenever a band changes their sound for whatever reasons, they have "sold-out". Are you all sitting comfortably? Here goes: DOO-D'N-DOO-DIT, DAH, D'T-D'T-DAH (that's what is says in the lyric sheet) Insipired stuff, I'm sure you'll all agree. So who is the prospective Nobel prize winner? Stand up Jon Anderson! Just goes to back up my view that Yes (classic Yes, anyway) wrote some of my favourite music of all times, but had some of the most inane, crappy lyrics I ever heard anywhere. As for Roger Dean being a good artist. Piss artist, possibly. All of his covers look like they belong on some tacky cheap science fiction novel that you'd normally find in the bargin bin at the super market checkout. Best thing he ever did was design that old Yes logo. Not that I really care about the artwork on any album too much. When I read some of the discussions on this list about things like the significance of the brokenmirror in the upper left hand corner of the cover, you know, just behind the third feather of the eagle standing on the hour glass, then I wonder what sort of lives some people have. Maybe it's just me, but I've usually got other things to do. Anybody else out there like Moonspell and Samael? Then you could try listening to the album 'The Other Side' by the Swiss band Alastis (another Swiss band other than MT20 mentioned on the list). Produced by Waldemar Sorychta (who else) the music sounds like Moonspell and Samael got involved in a really ugly car smash. My other current recommendation for those of you who like your music a bit darker and gloomier is the album 'Dol Guldur' by Summoning. Keyboards dominate, glockenspiels come and go and you start to think "new age" - until the brutal guitar riffs and the almost black metal vocals burst in. Sort of like Tiamat meets Dissection or Cradle Of Filth. Apparently the album is based on Tolkien's book 'Lord Of The Rings', but it's hard to tell. Interesting aside: according to the liner notes, it only took 3 days to record the whole album. If anybody is interested in watching a film that doesn't involve the earth being invaded by slimey green creatures and doesn't rely on special effects that cost as much as a small country's gross national product, then go and check out 'The English Patient'. Being awarded a whole bag of Oscars often means that a film sucks, but this film is the exception. Good actors, a very good story (and screenplay), and some wonderful scenic shots all add up to make a very moving and unforgetable film (but don't forget the tissues). Only sixteen days until Dream Theater play Gross Umstadt, but the waiting will be shortened by Heavenwood, Lake Of Tears and Theatre Of Tragedy on the 12th of April in Offenbach. Then Threshold in Offenbach on the 19th as well... And if any of you were wondering where the wonderful Yes lyrics can be heard, try Siberian Khatru on the album Close To The Edge (still amazing what Steve Howe used to do with that pedal steel guitar - perhaps that guy from Dream Theater could try it, what is his name, Mike Moore? Kevin Petrucci?) stay safe and happy listening Neil Gallop (nga@software-ag.de) Currently playing: Lemur Voice - Insights ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Apr 97 12:43:58 +0100 From: mwal@econ.vu.nl To: Subject: symphony x Message-ID: Hello jammers, does anyone know a reliable store where I can order the symphony x cd's?Here in Holland, I can't find them. Their sound is VERY different from Angra. Their old stuff (as in the "Evolution" album) is Heavy Metal, and some songs are really cool. The newer stuff, well, that's really horrible. :) They started to sing in portuguese (nothing against that, but the lyrics are TERRIBLE), and they changed to a more pop/soft sound. If you want to see them with André Matos, I think that there is one album, that I don't know the name. The Evoltuion one is cool, but the others ("Coma Rage", and this new one) are not good at all. Ah, and of course, IMHO.
