The response was not overwhelming but essentially confirmed my initial guess. With one or two exceptions, most people who focus on vocals (including my gf) preferred Awake as the album with the most vocal variety and "color". I still prefer I&W, but then I listen to the instruments more than anything else, and I think songs like Metropolis, TTT, and Learning to Live are almost untouchable - they've been chiseled into a special and elite place within the musical corners of my brain. Oh, and Surrounded is one of the most ass-kicking rock ballads imaginable. Who woulda thought 5/4 could sound so damned smooth? cheers, -Neil. "Death is the first dance, eternal... I think somebody should have spent the money to print it out on paper and snail mail the thanged ding to them as well. And when is that studio time that DT is scheduled for? Mid July? First of all I would like to request for you to play a Dream Theater song: Lie or Take The Time. Second me and MANY others would like to see some other stuff played like: Dream Theater, Queensryche, older Metallica, Tool, Rush, Megadeth, Type O Negative, SavaTage ect. Please either bring back Headbangers Ball or another show like it. Hrm. That's funny. I actually like the new album, and can still go back in time and pretty much rattle off every line from The Warning album. I've collected so many QR boots that people can't even give them to me anymore, and I only hang out with people who bear a striking resemblence to Geoff Tate. Gee, I must not be a true fan. Strange how they've "sold out" and I haven't seen a video or even heard their song once on the radio. Hell, Disconnected and Bridge were on the radio all the time after Promised Land came out. I still hear Silent Lucidity and Another Rainy Night all the time, and still I haven't heard a thing from the new album. The double cd for Holy Land, the second cd is a live acoustic concert recoreded at the FNAC in France. There's only 3 songs on it...the second cd is the japanese version of Holy Land, which has the extra song. The BEST thing to do, unless your a total fanatic :) Buy the normal/domestic release of the cd...then, buy the Freedom Call EP. You get the japanese bonus track, PLUS 5 other songs, including a Judas Priest cover of Painkiller. Your lacking those 3 songs on that double cd set but well, taking this route, you get more for your cash. Of course, you can always just buy the entire damn thing. I don't think that live at the FNAC disc is available on its own, at least I haven't seen it yet. But here's a thought I have= n Clark, You totally misread the point.. I'm not saying you have to go buy the album, listen to it and love it. I was trying to say that you should support them in their decisions to alter their sound and change there style, and take the good with the bad no matter what. Not support them in a financial sense. But to go and verbally degrade a band for releasing an album that does not match up to his/hers own personal preferences or expectations does not make sence and I would be hard pressed to call that person a "true fan" . From a personal stand point, I don't believe a band owes there fans anything, I think it's the reversal. Plus, the only thing a fan should really owe them is nothing but respect... nothing more, nothing less Plus, if DT decided to go soft country, or POLKA for that matter, I myself, would respect their wishes and support them in their decisions.. I know I may not buy the album, but I certainatly wouldn't scrutinize them all to hell for it. I'll be a die hard Metallica fan for the rest of my life, but I just prefer their pre-Black album material. Same with DT if it ever comes to those circumstances. -ArchAngel ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Apr 1997 01:11:30 PST From: email_address_removed (James D Carey) To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: Being true to yourself Message-ID: James said: Well, if the musicians have any REAL integrity, they will not listen to t= he record company. Are you a whore and a slave to the money, or are you real???! Maybe thats why DT isn't in the studio right now, huh?? =20 Thank you for partially making my point, DT does not want to conform.. therefore they are not making money and puting out an album and are set on Elektra back burner.. it's a sad state of sorry affairs, but true none the less. . In the record business unfortunately everything is money now... it's no longer about the MUSIC, it's about money. Who do you think a company is going to prioritize.. the really talented band that went to school and learned their instruments who's album go gold, maybe platnum at best. Or the cheesy 3 chord garage band from NYC who's music is so simple and so boring and will relate to all the MTV brainwashed teens and who's album goes triple platinum. You kinda have to do what the execs ask you to do, or you may be without a job, may have a job but not making money (ie: what Elektra is doin to DT right now) which is worse than having no contract because you are bound by signature and can't go look around to other labels without getting sued. Or you breach your contract and get sued for a couple of millions of dollars. It's alot easier to say "FUCK THEM" and then to say it and actually do it. I'm not saying I agree with this bullshit ideology (and far from it, I want to see DT release a new album as much as the rest of you) but more simply. I was just trying to offer an explanation as to why QR might not sound like what everyone was hoping for. Nope, sorry, not the way it works. That album is heavily scrutinized and listened to by the record company management, and if he/she/they doesn't like it or it doesn't think it will sell, then ya go back to the drawing board..and this process keeps going on until the band produces something that fits the criteria or sounds a bit more like what they're looking for. -ArchAngel ------------------------------ End of YTSEJAM Digest 2413 **************************
