I know that in my state, I have a Governor that is dedicated to somehow improving the education level in the state. If Bob Dole had been elected President, the department of education would be no more and we wouldn't have student loans from the Government. Also, we wouldn't be able to improve at all. I have to say that we may not be the best in education, but we are really trying. Clinton's personal life might be on it's low, but he is education minded. My quiz wasn't fair and I know it; I did it because someone got all upset because some Americans don't know where some countries are located. Try to remember that most countries in Europe are smaller than a lot of States here and a lot of us can't tell you where the States are at. I heard that some people think that North Dakota still uses the horse & Buggy. I really didn't mean I don't like Europe, I love it there. When I got home I even defended the French. A lot of the Stereotypes I heard about Europe were not true at all. Someday soon I plan on going back for at least a month so I get to see more (we were only there 10 days last time.) The reason I get so defensive is that a lot of people really enjoy bashing America every chance they get (Hi Graham), but when the times get tough America is usually the first place they call. That's enough from me and I'll shut up now. If y'all want to continue this thread please do, but it's really starting to bore me. For all of you new age/jazz lovers out there, I just picked up a kewl one that a friend found the other day. It's by some chick named Keiko MatsuiL Dream Walk. I must say, I rather enjoy it. Kinda like Yanni with a jazz flavor. Kinda reminiscent of a cross between Yanni and Kenny G I guess. Also, I hope none of you who had problems ordering from Knights of the Round's website tried ordering anywhere else. I just got my confirmation letter today. It must have been an act of God that phone call couldn't make it through to impulse. Now just watch their site screw up my order and I get 50 copies of Lawrence Welk's greatest hits from Europe charged on my card. :P I'd have to burn fix dubs over the top of them and sell them at $25 apiece to make up the difference. :) (This is just a joke) KorgX3 a.k.a. email_address_removed http://www.cyberhighway.net/~ibanez/index.html Disclaimer: The content expressed in the previous document is not the opinion of the author. I got Michael Sweet's 2nd album Real. It is as mellow as the first solo album. I love it though. IMHO Michael Sweet has one of the most emotive voices. That's why I'm such a fan of his. I just like singers in the high range for some reason - like Mike Majitevic of Steelheart - now he's hit notes higher than any other man I've heard! Also got HitNF last Tuesday. That is the same day my inbox filled up so I missed about a weeks worth of jams including all the dicussion on HitNF. I love the album. I can see how there may be disappointment because (as someone stated) some alterna-type riffs. I see much more QR in it though. I even hear a little Saigon Kick like KorgX3 said (a week ago). The songs that have already made a big name for themselves in my eyes are "Saved," "You," and (of course) "sp00L." I just found it humorous that my friend said, "I can't believe you're listening to popular music," because he has heard "Sign of the Times" on the radio. :) ***Rob*** email_address_removed ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 1 Apr 1997 00:22:18 -0500 (EST) From: email_address_removed To: email_address_removed Subject: DTIFC today Message-ID: Got the latest copy today (well done as always Neil) and was struck by one comment from James about the new album... only about eight or nine songs. The six he mentioned that would most likely make it were the five from the fix shows and Trail of Tears. Where are you now I think will also make it, but really that is not very many. Message-ID: Greetings fellow jammers!! Well, it has been a long time since I've written and thrown in my buck fifty towards the misc. rampant babbles. So I thought I might say a couple words and ask a question or two. I guess I'm amazed by the amount of time people spend bickering over the total USA vs Canada pissing contest. WHO CARES?!?! I mean come one, it boils down to two things. 1.) They whoop our ass in hockey 2.) They're football and basketball teams suck. THERE!! How simple is it. Besides, why is it so important? I applaude everyone for their admiration and patriotism, but if you have that much energy and that big of an undying love for your country that you have to waste our time so that now we have to filter through all the BS just to get to some "DTC" or "MATURE NDTC" GO JOIN THE ARMY and BE ALL THAT YOU CAN BE THERE!! Not here... as much as some of us love our country, we take the "real American attitude" and don't give two shits what other people think of us. Ahh, the new QR.., this album totally knocked my socks off... I wasn't expecting anything like this, but I don't consider it dissapointing by any mean.. (ya should have seen my face when I heard the new Metallica [another topic to be discussed) I really don't look at it as a QR album, I went in it with the attitude that I'm listening to an entirlely new band and disregarded there previous material. I'm a DJ for a local radio station and do metal/prog metal show. Two nights before the album was "officially" released, a fellow collegue told me that he talked to the stations EMI rep. and she said that "They're growing up, and older now... can't expect them to bang their heads forever." I'm sorry, but I consider a person who's a true fan to be with the band and like them and support them no matter what musical change they may make. Not someone who jumps off the wagon just because they "changed their sound" went "grunge" or another popular term "commercialized". You should take the good with the band and except it for what it is, not degrade it for what you think it should have been. Another question, who's to say "(insert band name here) sold out" or "went commercial" Hello folks, I'd hate to say this, but a band's album is scrutinized heavily before it hits final production. The brass and head honchos in a company have final say, and if they told QR or DT to produce something thats more in with todays musical style of whats selling, they HAVE to do that or it's considered a breach in contract. Hate to break it too ya, the bands care about it's fans... not the record industry, they're in it for the money. So if grunge is selling... then so be it, thats what they're going to flood the market. Why? To get more money. So next time you accuse a band of selling out.. try to keep in mind that the band does NOT have final say in what hits the shelves and it may not be their fault. Metallica (unfortunatly) has not broken up, or even come close to it infact.. on the contrary, it's the other direction. As soon as this tour finishes up, they're going back into the studio to record another album that is reportedly due out by X-Mas time maybe Novemeber (Hmm, and we wonder why DT can't get into the studio). Jason was quoted to saying that it is "Heavier and more RAW" and he quelled the rumors that this was going to be leftover shit from their previous outing. I was very dissapointed with "Load" I considered it NOT to be "sold out", but a lazy album all together in which most of the songs seemed to be lacking the energy that the previous albums have had. A couple tunes (I think 3 tops) had some of that energy (that seems to be dwindling with every release). Hey, being a DJ.. I have to tell ya, the new GWAR is unbelievably screwy.. Seriously check out this album. And after listening to think to yourself what this band would be like if they took there talent (yes they do have some) seriously. This album I think personifies they're versatiliy. They have a wide range of songs (from straight on Metal to a GWAR style rock ballad, to a GWAR style country tune) that musically is excellent... lyrically is typical GWAR.. The album is called Carnival of Chaos.. definatly a must check it out.. Another couple of notes, we did an interview with Glen Tippton a couple of weeks back. He said that the new singer for Priest will totally kick you in the balls! And will put Rob to shame. Just started recording another album, but the release date is not quite known. The new singer's name is Ripper Owens.. apparently a veteran of the west coast shred scene.. Also, this summers OzzFest with headlining act Black Sabbath, will be without their original drummer (who's name eludes me right now) and the band will be joined once again by Mike Borden of Faith No More.. and from what I understand, look for a possible live album by them some time this winter. Has anyone one heard a responce from Elektra concerning the petition? Just curious.. Hey D.. here's one for you to ask Portnoy next time you talk to him.. At 4 min and 53 sec. in to Metropolis, Myung does a bass fill that's one half of the LSOaD intro ... What's the deal with that? Was LSOaD inspired by Metropolis? Just curious... -ArchAngel email_address_removed "Hey, I'm a firm believer in the philosophy of a ruling class... ..especially since I rule!" -Clerks ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 1 Apr 1997 04:01:05 -0500 (EST) From: Anton Max To: email_address_removed Subject: new fates (semi-DTC) Message-ID: Howdy. I'm here to tell you all about A Pleasant Shade of Gray. First of all, you all have to buy it. Comes out April 22. It's the closest thing to a new DT album we're likely to have for a while. Kevin Moore's presence makes the whole thing sound a lot like like DT. And if, like me, you're a crazed Kevin fan, and have been dying to hear him cut loose and play some, you need to hear this album. Remember Images & Words? For godsakes, if you do nothing else the rest of your life, buy this album. Jim Matheos said it would be nothing like the last couple, and he was right. This is the heaviest Fates since No Exit, with a keyboard augmented sound reminiscent of Vauxdvihl, or Metropolis. And Joey Vera does a fantastic job on bass, with one of the best bass tones I've ever heard. Remember the organ sound on 6:00? That's here. There's a really wicked part about a quarter of the way through where the guitars and organ duel in this awesome descending riff that cascades down and overlaps itself and just kicks a whole lot of ass. The drums. Well, Mark Zonder's been my favourite drummer for a long time, and he's up to his usual tricks, with some awesome thundercrack sounds among a gamut of other cool things. On one particularly awesome quiet part, he plays his cymbals backwards. Ray's singing is beautiful. He doesn't scream, unfortunately, but that was expected. The vocal melodies are very emotional, dark and sad, and he sings his heart out. The guitars are a lot heavier than they have been on the last couple albums. Beautiful solos, though there aren't quite enough of them. Other things to look forward to: There's a really neat part where the piano and acoustic guitar go at it, reminiscent of the intro to At Fates Hands. There's a sort of chorus that goes something like "nothing leads to nothing and nothing at all" that's wickedly dark and powerful. The lyrics, from what I can make out, are typical thought-provoking Fates stuff. One of my early favourite parts is about "writing letters in my head," and Ray sings "Where you are, I am, in nights that never end...Where you are, I am, in words I'll never send" and it's one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard. So, to sum up, save up your pennies for April 22. And please don't ask me to copy this for you, I promised I wouldn't distribute it. -maximilian Anton Max MadMax+@cmu.edu http://thunderdome.pc.cs.cmu.edu/aepithex.html ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 1 Apr 1997 19:27:45 +1000 From: "Graham Boyle" To: Subject: RE: Great Concept Albums Message-ID: One album that you should check out is Time Machine's 'Act 11 Galileo', it is up there with Marillion's 'Brave' and Queensryche's 'Operation Mindcrime' as IMO, three of the greatest concept album's to ever hit my ears. Let's see, a prime example of the American attitude back then...what country liberated Holland and why?...Canada did, why, because the U.S. wasn't "concerned" with it because it was a "small" country. The U.S.' ego decided to take a holiday...so, Canada liberated Holland. There's 1 reason. Could it have also been because of the repricussions of the 2nd world war? Those were some harsh taxes and cash owed to the other countries as a result of Hitlers exploits. Although, to be fair, that's not solely directed at the U.S. Another reason, the United States never ever won World War 2...I don't even understand how that came about. See, the US, was part of a group, called the Alies. (I believe that was the term)...they were in a group with Canada and the British, among other countries, THEY won the war, NOT the US. The United States is NOTHING special, sure they had an assload of troops and so forth BUT you wanna talk Special...take a look at Englands' role in WW2. They get their asses kicked by the Nazi's, literally and THEN fight BACK and probably ended up doing more damnage than the the alies together BUT if it wasn't for D-Day, and everyone working as a TEAM, we'd all be dead or something like that. My point is this, no country is better than another place. Thats like saying, Western Canada is better than Eastern Canada or the praries. neither place is better, all have their advantages and disadvatages...but one government :) I read someones post where they said that the US is the best place to get an education because they have the best colleges/universities...that's a load of shit. Education is what you make of it no matter WHAT country you are in. Patriotism is duely noted everyone but I think it's going a bit to far this time when we insult another man's country for assumptions based on half truths. Granted, there are some really stupid people out there, for example, not picking on the american people here, far from it...but I talked to one on a chat line and he thought, that in Canada, it always snowed and that we lived in igloo's. I can tell you for a fact, I ain't in no igloo (sold ours last week). Can we end this stupid thread? Aaron Silverman, Nah dude, your close :) Capitol/EMI was Maiden's former label hehe.
