I use a sig too and I kind of think of it as a penis - some of them are smaller than mine, but most of them are larger. ;) >Whoa! I'm going to see them on the 28th in Palo Alto and I can't fucking wait. They were the kings of rock in the 70's and influenced most of today rock bands. While on the subject of Kick ass guitarists, I can't believe that the Guitarist for Loudness (Akira) never gets mentioned here. I had the pleasure of seeing these guys last night in their only American concert appearance and that guy impressed the shit out of me. I definitely need to get some Loudness stuff! >On one note: try playing thrash metal in hundred degree heat while jumping >around and grunting and screaming. I don't think you can include any band that "changes" in the genre of Progressive. I think the changes made have to A). move towards greater expression, B). move forward, not backwards (i.e. do not become stagnant... don't play the same music over and over again) and finally, yes I will say it C). there must be some level of technical excellence involved. That can be manifest in musical knowledge, technical ability on one's instrument, complexity of songwriting and music (not lyrics... the deepest lyrics in the world can be sung over one chord). I will freely admit, that any band, DT, Rush, Fates, or Queensryche can become non-progressive. That isn't meant to imply that they would no longer be great, but if at any time the band ceases to follow those ideals, I personally will not consider them progressive (though I'll probably still love the music.) Now the Megadeth issue: I've seen DT AND Megadeth twice each. In my personal experience, DT puts on a better show where the lights and cool gimicks are concerned, but Megadeth has more of a stage presence. When I saw Megadeth, Friedman and Ellefson were all over the place. Friedman is always moving around on stage. At both DT shows, only James moved around more than to stand a little closer to the stage and let everyone drool over a guitar solo. I think the people taking the position that DT has a better stage presence than MD are probably doing so because they like DT more, not taking the actual shows into account. The debate is about whether it is >kosher or not to go against the band's wishes by booting the Fix shows. Obviously you've missed the point of what I was trying to say completely, I'm not going to bother getting completely in to this, but since you didn't seem to understand, I'll try to sum it up quickly. Bootlegging is inevitable, no matter if a band requests the fans to refrain from it or not. The Fix show boots are a perfect example of this. End of story. >The list is not being pulled apart. Anyone who thinks the list is going to >disintegrate because people on here have differing opinions on certain >subjects is confused about the purpose of the list. Why would anyone WANT >to read a list where everyone agreed with everyone else. To me, that'd be >pretty damn boring. Gawd, you REALLY did miss the point of my thread, didn't you??!! Here, let me show you exactly what I said: >Now, I'm not by any means saying that people shouldn't express their >opinions - go for it, and all the more power to you! >It's cool to express your opinion, it's cool if people agree, and >there is ALWAYS the flip side where people won't agree, which is cool too. >It's called LIFE people. Get used to it. >Go for it, express your opinion, let others do the same, >go ahead and argue it if you'd like, but don't go getting personal and >start lunging for the throat. I think we're all more mature than that. So, kind sir who OBVIOUSLY just skimmed over my thread and didn't bother trying to understand what I was saying: I did in fact say that differing opinions are cool, which I showed you above, I also said that people have to accept the fact that others HAVE differing opinions and they have to DEAL WITH IT instead of getting into personal insults (and don't try to say there haven't been any, cause I'll go back and post them for you). And, if those insults against the characters of others keep up, this list WILL fall apart. Ok, I'm sick of this now, I'm not posting about this again. Hopefully this cleared things up for those who chose not to fully understand what the hell I was saying. /me gets off her soapbox Ryanne ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Mar 1997 13:46:25 -0800 From: Adam Barnhart To: email_address_removed Subject: Maidenity Message-ID: >From: "Ollila Marko" > >Greetings ye 'jamanoids... > >This is for you two who are interested in Iron Maiden. >We all know that Iron Maiden's fall from grace started when Bruce Dickinson >quit the band. In any event, Steve Harris is really the driving force in the band. It isn't that Adrian Smith can't write or anything (on the contrary, he's awfully damn good), but Steve Harris is one of those guys, like James Hetfield, who can just fire out a great heavy song at a moment's notice. Dave does play off of his co-guitarist alot, and Janick does sacrifice some technique in order to run around the stage and show some presence. I think Maiden's lowest moment was the two Live albums in '93. The mixing is horrible, the performances were weak, and you had to buy those bastards separate. I saw Maiden on the X-Factour and was happy to see that they were playing a lot tighter than on the live albums. Don't get me wrong, I like Blaze alot, but I think if Harris had expanded his acceptances of nationalities of singers, Maiden would be alot better. Kiske would have fucking ruled in Maiden!!! I wish someone would put out a boot of the vocalist auditions for Maiden like they did for DT. The thought of Kiske singing the Trooper puts chills up my spine!!! I am praying that when I get home my copy of "Scenes From A Memory" will have finally arrived, but I don't think it's that likely. Can someone post a copy of the setlist for the last Fix show? I'm really curious to see what all the fuss is all about. Thanks. As for a boot of this show goes, I probably wouldn't buy it. As much as I need to inject some new DT into my veins, I wouldn't want to spoil the surprise when the final fully mixed version that the boys had inteded for us to hear is released. That's just my two cents. His range is low, but where is it written that a metal singer has to be a soprano? Blaze's voice has a lot of power. It's not suited to some of the older material, but it fit in perfectly on the X-Factor, which IMO ranks with 7th Son and Powerslave as one of the very best Maiden albums. Downfall? Listen to Sign of the Cross sometime. If you cant even see why someone would like them, i'll give you a brief synopsis of my reasons. The energy on the discs is simply incredible, they use their own totally wacked out equpiment that have been rigged up in tons of fucked up ways, they're doing something i've never heard before, and sounds really good to my ear, they record out in a cabin type place and get a real vibe as opposed to a cramped 3rd story downtown studio, and they're extremely cool to their fans. i know its probably not most people's topic of discussion here to talk about korn, but since one person threw a negative opinion on them, i felt at least to take up the other side. i recommend anyone who's never heard them and likes heavier tunes to check them out. ~Rip ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Mar 1997 19:17:31 -0400 (EDT) From: CLARK ABEL To: email_address_removed Subject: Korn on the Kob Message-ID: This is in response to Rip's post about Korn. You said they were tight on the albums, but you had never heard them live. Well, I've heard them live. They opened for Megadeth a couple of summers ago, (or was it this last summer), and between them and Fear Factory, I was so disgusted by the utter lack of musicianship displayed by these two bands that I was sick of the noise by the time MD came on. Korn was so far from tight that I wonder if maybe they pulled a Milli Vanilli on the albums you're referring to. This was just one show, but it was AWFUL. It is more commercial, but being that I like that style, or era, of music, I think it is good. I couldn't believe that "Out on the Streets" sounded familiar. I hadn't heard of Savatage till EoT. I got Stratovarius's Episode. Not quite what I was expecting, but it was very good. I know I'll be listening to it for a while. The first 2 tracks reminded me of Helloween basically because I've beem listening to them recently and there was the common bond of the fast paced drumming. I love the vocalist. He sounds so operetic. At several times I was reminded of a mesh between old and new Geoff Tate. Over all a good album in the power/prog metal category. I also got Michael Sweet's (ex-Stryper) Real.
