I heard Fates yesterday. First time I think. At least that I can remember. Probably heard it years ago, as the tapes have been sitting around for years but I never popped them in the deck... I liked the overall sound of the band and the singer (what's his name again?) has a nice voice, but I think the first several songs he lacked a controlled melody. It's like he was going all over the place making it up as he went along. Also heard Crimson Glory again after several years...never had paid much attention to this one either, but I was digging through my old stuff wondering what the heck all these bands sound like... I did get into the first several songs, but it got tiring towards the end. And I really enjoyed Lethal after a few listens, but there isn't much variety amongst the songs. Word has it they got a new one out soon... Anyone heard it? And last, Vicious Rumors...didn't like this at all. didn't even get very far into the first song. My dearest Clark, you must have forgotten to read Itchy's 8 Rules For Posting, haven't you? That's ok, though. I sympathize. For I, just 8 months ago, was as foolhardy as you. I propounded to everybody in my sight that I would kill them if they tried to play country music in my presence. I even told my best friend that I would stop the car and make her walk if she paused even for a second on a country station...even on the freeway. We are so foolish in our youth, aren't we? Seriously, though. A loooong time ago, "longer now than it seems", there was a very intelligent discussion on the 'Jam concerning the two most important aspects of musicianship...emotion and technical ability. It was widely agreed upon that most bands possess one or the other, but rarely both. (Quick note: anger is a form of emotion, but it is also the easiest to present, therefore it is most often left out of this consideration.) Now, on to my point. (Egads! I have one?) When I finally opened my eyes to country, I noticed that there was a high degree of emotion present in most songs, some even more than Tori (the resident heart-string tugger on this list). This is viewed by me, and others, as a welcomed break from the tech- nical intensity of Prog and other intense guitar music (e.g., Satch). Another thing I have noticed is that some of the songwriting is absolutely phenomenal, much better than a lot of other genres out there (I am not going to point fingers, but they are pretty easy to figure out). One last thing: Country is closely related to blues...very closely. In my world, as well as other I have visited, there is a nice little path that can be taken. It goes: Country - Blues - Roadhouse - Rock - Hard Rock - Progressive Rock Kinda kewl, eh? (Quick note: this is not the only path to prog, just one of the many.) I'm not saying that you can't slam Country, but I decided to stand up and give one of my favorite genres, as well the genre with the largest fan-base in America, its due. Now, pardon me as I don my shit-kickers, my baggies, my DT shirt, and my extremely well worn flannel. Originally the term "progressive rock" was used to discribe the bands that started blending stuff like classical/reggae etc into rock, and not sticking to the normal rock format ie: verse/chorus/verse/chorus/solo/chorus, but tried to take rock a step forward, ie: progressing. Bands that were in this original wave were bads like Yes, King Crimson etc. Now the music has pretty much stayed the same with little variations (krautrock, canterbury, psych, progressive metal etc...), so IMO the term progressive that are used on bands nowadays is a label, just like grunge or neoclassic, the progression was made in the late 60's/early 70's, nowadays you have bands that play it like it sounded in the 70's (ie: Yes, Spock's Beard etc) and bands that have mixed in other influences too, like metal, etc etc.... I think that at least I percieve Megadeth as more boring since they play bigger venues, where it takes some moving around to make it interesting. I saw them in a big ice hockey stadium and still they refused to move. When I saw DT, they played a really small place, so there wasn't all that much room to move around anyway.
