Judge for yourself. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ > From: "Raivo Hool" > Dream Theater fans put it eloquently: "I think Awake was a step down > in quality compared to Images And Words." But it wasn't :) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Pulled out some old vinyl I've had stored away for several years, one of which was Kansas' "Point of Know Return". I had forgotten how much I love this stuff. Anyone who doubts whether this band was progressive enough (whatever "enough" means) only need listen to Paradox, Portrait (He Knew) and Closet Chronicles (especially the jam at the end). The similarities in song structure with that of DT's are quite evident, blending the intricate with the outright "jam from the soul" ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ > "Rubina's Blue Sky Happiness" - Joe Satriani, undoubtly the greatest > song to make love to. Better than Ravel? :) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ > From: email_address_removed > and unless someone comes out with a completely > mind-blowing album, this is the best thing to come out of 97. It was our last, best hope for 97.....and the name of band is DT :) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ LiTS - Lost In the Sky (bootleg) With the new disc coming out real soon now :) , I noticed that "Lines in the Sand" might cause problems when attempting to acronymonize it :) Now, I feel it is my duty to make D-man aware of this. I was at CD Warehouse a few weeks back digging around to see what I could find. I headed over to the "Import" section to see if they had anything by our favorite group. While I was digging around, I caught something out the corner of my eye. It had large block letters in yellow/orange on a dark background. Those of you with Superior's album might be reminded of something you've seen. I sure was. When I realized that it *wasn't* Superior after all, I thought nothing more of it and went on my way. A week or so later I still hadn't managed to get that image out of my head, so I did a quick net search on the name and ended up at the WWW Music Database in Norway. They had a few brief words about the group, labeled them as "gothic/medieval", and gave their first album a 9.7 out of 10 rating. So back to CD Warehouse I went. I picked up their first album (not the one that had caught my eye), tossed it into their CD player, and was hooked in under 15 seconds. The group is "Faith and the Muse". They are by no means heavy. They are dark, ominous, powerful, beautiful, whimsical, and driving. If you're looking for crunch, though, there's none of that here. It's a two person outfit, so no wild guitar solos, no manic drums fills, no thick orchestrations. It's nothing like Dream Theater, Fates Warning, Savatage, Vai, or any of the other people that get mentioned around here most of the time. But it is good, or at least I think so. If you find yourself listening to Brave, Watermark, Dead Winter Dead, and Promised Land more often than I&W, Space in Your Face, and Ah Via Musicom, this might be something you'd like. The one description I've been able to come up with that people seem to agree with is imagine Trent Reznor and Enya being locked up in a studio together. For those who are interested, they've got their own web site at www.mercyground.com. I don't remember seeing any sound clips there, but I believe you can order CDs for those daring enough to order something unheard. If you ever run across one of their albums, I'd suggest giving it a listen. I've since gone back and picked up their second album, and I think I like it even better than the first. So, in a nutshell... Group: "Faith and the Muse" Albums: Elyria Annwyn, Beneath the Waves WebSite: www.mercyground.com I'm working on putting some .wav files together for anyone who'd like to hear them. Only problem is, my e-mail gateway would throw a fit if I tried to mail them to anyone and I don't have a web page. So, I'm looking for volunteers to host 2-4 Megs worth of .wav files. Any takers? Could you please post the web addresses for the two places? I couldn't find them when searching the web. Thanx! BTW, I was pleasantly surprised to read that others were pissed at the ommission of a couple of those awesome parts from the original version of ACOS on the new version. My wife, ever since she heard the new version, has complained to me about the fact that DT scrapped the "16th note" part. (I'm not a musician, so I have no idea what the hell that means... but I think I know the part they're talking about...). I have to agree with my wife on that one. I am also personally upset at the fact that they replaced that AWESOME key solo at the end with the guitar solo replacement. It just doesn't have the same emotion as far as I'm concerned. I do, however, love the ballz and chunk part they added, as well as the great stuff they added at the beginning of the song. I guess the bottom line is that I like pieces of both versions, but I am not sure which one I like better.
