I figured it would be a great way for me to learn to play the song and (of course) it was. Then I got to a point where I'd decided to put in some drums. (AAAAAAAH!) I completely fear Mike's drumming. Trying to put all that into my keyboard almost fills up the polyphony. :) After spending countless hours air-drumming the tune down the freeway, I might be able to give it a whack again, sonce I know how some of the parts go Good luck on that ACoS one. Who wants karaoke?) asked about a few people. Robin McAuley used to sing with Michael Schenker's MSG, which got changed to "McAuley-Schenker-Group" for a few cds there. I liked them. That tune "never-ending nightmare" was cool. Glenn Hughes, whore that he is, has been everywhere from Purple to Sabbath to a quickie on the Marc Bonilla cd. Plus he has his own stuff, most of which I think comes from Japan. Tony Franklin, he of the farting bass II, I thought was in Blue Murder, and of course the Firm. I could be wrong about the BM thing, as I don't have any of their material. I thought I remembered seeing him there... back to your Sunday morning pancakes. GO WINGS! There's no emotion behind the music. It sounds as if they just went through the motions of playing, for the sake of getting it on tape. The songs aren't poorly written, just poorly performed. As usual, I have no idea what the words are about. C+ Galactic Cowboys: Space In Your Face Wow! This is one great album. The very first notes just grabbed me. This album has everything I want out of music. Heavy guitars, really catchy hooks, incredible harmonies, and humor. It's speed metal with great singing. I didn't know people could do that! Downside: the two hidden tracks on the CD are fucking annoying to get to. Good songs, too bad they're so buried in the extra tracks at the end. A Collective Soul: Disciplined Breakdown I don't like Collective Soul, and I finally figured out why. The songs are ok, the instruments are performed well. The melodies and hooks are catchy enough. But there's only one thing that sets CS apart from all the other bands out there playing this type of music, and unfortunately it's a negative. I can't stand the production. It sounds so sterile! The guitars sound as if they were recorded by plugging them into the board, with no amps. Guitars are supposed to sound threatening, vital, alive. Even Jewel's guitar sounds more like it's there in the room with you than CS's guitars sound. And there's a lot of electronic percussion and stuff that I really don't like. You're a rock band. Use drums. Anyway, I think if you already like CS you'll like this album. I just don't. B- Spock's Beard: Beware of Darkness Oddly enough, when I first got this, I was disappointed. But I was only disappointed insofar as comparing it to "The Light." More songs, shorter songs. They didn't grab be as immediately as the songs on "The Light" did. But after about the third listen, I got it. Or, rather, it got me. It hasn't left my CD player since I got it. Killer harmonies, great songwriting, and those analog synths just give me goose bumps. A+ Spock's Beard: The Official Live Bootleg This was recorded at ProgFest 95 (or was it ProgDay? I can never remember). It's just amazing. The four songs from "The Light" and "Thoughts" from "Beware of Darkness." There really isn't anything more to say. A+ Brad Gillis: Gilrock Ranch Any album that can combine the guitar pyrotechnics of Brad Gillis (ex-Night Ranger, ex-Ozzy), the keyboard wizardry of Derek Sherinian, and the vocals (on some tracks) of Gregg Allman this seamlessly gets high marks in my book. Add to that the drums of Michael Cartellone (ex-Damn Yankees) and Carmine Appice (ex-everybody) and a couple of other stellar musicians, and you've got a recipe for success. And it paid off. Brad and Derek wrote some great tunes, especially "Opus Winfrus." Some of these tracks actually have a hint of prog in them. If you like 80s guitar heroes (and who doesn't?), Derek (and who doesn't?), and the rest of these musicians (and who doesn't?), and you like this sort of instrumental stuff, get this disc. A OK, that's about it for now. I have been written to him, and asked him for an update, and here is his response: _________________________________________ Hi Michael, Thanks for letting me know what's happening out there. Here is where we are at with the Rudess Morgenstein Project (RPM) ; The album is recorded- mastered and ready to roll from a musical standpoint. . The delay is in negotiations with this one particular record company . AAARRGGG!!! It all takes to f--k--g long. We would like very much to go with this company , so we are working it out. Meanwhile, Rod and I are moving ahead as we deal with it all. We have been meeting with the graphic designers concerning the CD cover and internal graphics, and are looking to have that completed in two weeks. We are hoping the deal is in place by then, but if it's not we will begin to organize an independent release (we will do it) while we look for another deal. I would say that within four months we will have it available. Maybe sooner. I had an idea that I should bounce off you and our friends at YTSEJAM. I'm thinking that while we wait for the record company B S to be resolved, I could burn some custom CD's myself of the album. It would be a CDR that Rod and I could autograph- it would have no formal graphics at all, but would be a one of a kind collectors item kind of thing. It would have to sell for more than a factory type CD because of the nature of what I would have to do to make them myself.. Maybe if I hear back that a reasonable number of people are into it, we can do that so as not to keep people waiting to long. You can mail me and let me know the response, or people can write me directly with there thoughts. I have not posted anything on my site because I didn't feel there was any definite word on whats happening. I am however re-organizing my site in the next couple of weeks to better inform fans and friends what is happening. I'm going to have an update section that I will refresh every week or so, as well as concert schedule posting. By the way I'll be performing the first live performance of "Switched on Bach" ever at the Beacon Theater on April 5th with Wendy Carlos and five other synthesists. Should be pretty awesome. Also Rod and I will play at the Berkeley school of music in Boston on April 1st coming up. There will be more shows in the northeast around that time and I'll let you know exactly when I get the details.
