I have something important to talk about. The other night in #ytsejam we decided we needed to start this petition up in full force. We started a committee to get this thing organized and running, and now I'm proud to say that thanks to the efforts of (IRC Nicks) D-Man, M-Bone, Chambers, Ryan, Spartacus, DerrickC, Iolo, TheHand, YtseBen, Spine, Aragorn, Ryan, and myself (Madsman) we have the page up and running, where you can write your entry to the petition, at http://www,prognosis.com/petition (we're gonna make it prettier soon too). The final result will be viewable on the web page, and will also be sent in an e mail (the script generates an e mail to one of my mailboxes, that I'll format and send to EastWest by e mail and regular mail. If you haven't signed yet, please take the time to do so. It's been tested in all browsers including Lynx for you shell users. Put your biases against me aside if you have any and do this for the band and for yourselves. All credit for this web page is given directly to the Ytsejam and its wonderful members. We'll make sure DT knows it's the collaborative effort of us all that got this thing going. We have decided to maintain anonimity with the band (even though Portnoy will probably read this)... we dont want any thanks or any credit for this... we just have the side-hope in mind that maybe DT will thank the Jam in the credits to the new album. Finally, there will soon be a page on the site that will basically work as a form for you to print and fill out, if you are so inclined. Paper with ink on it means more to people than paper with printer toner on it. If you have the time and are willing to do so, check back at the site again in a day or two for this page, and fill it out. We'll designate an address to hold the mail until we do our petition bomb. You will receive updates here regularly with any and all pertinent information about the site and the petitions's progress. The committee we've set up has designated members to do particular things for the site and advertisement. But it is YOU that will make the difference. Post to the page, and tell everyone you know. Link to the page from your web sites. At http://www.SpiritOne.com/~schnoor/dtarc/ you will even find a nifty petition graphic to use as a link. Thank you and sign the petition!!!! http://www.prognosis.com/petition/ Chris W. If someone, or him, can mail me his e-mail address, I would be grateful. two days ago, I went to the Steve Hogarth "H" show and it was really great. He played his whole album, plus "King" from Marillion and two covers: 1 of XTC and one of stevie Wonder. As a third encore, he came back alone to play a piano / voice version of "Easter" and "The hollow man". It wasn't planned! I've heard the new marillion, "This strange engine", and I have to say that it is a very good album, a bit different from "afraid of sunlight". More details later. And keep your eyes open for the announcement of a DT fans convention in France at the end of april. stephane ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Feb 1997 00:42:09 -0500 (EST) From: Rick Audet To: email_address_removed Subject: Petition!!!! Message-ID: Friends, Earthlings, Jammers, lend me your ears. If you haven't heard already, there is a formal petition in the works to get our beloved Dream Theater into the studio to get this record on the streets ASAP. We all can see that something at EastWest is keeping the boys in withdrawls, and it's time we get together and make our Voice heard!! Something similar to this has been done in the past, and it worked. Those of you who don't know, it was the Jammers who managed to persuade EastWest to release A Change Of Seasons, and the Jammers are rightfully thanked in the liner notes. If you weren't here for the last one, now is YOUR chance to participate. Skeptics claim that just because it worked once doesn't mean it'll work again, but this is entirely the wrong attitude to have. If we sit on our hands like chickens we can (I'm not calling anyone a chicken, a porcupine nor an armadillo, it's a simile...no flames please.), but that surely won't do anything. This effort is well-organized by some real take-charge folks, and has the power to really make a different. Heck, it surely can't hurt!! What YOU need to do, is sign the petition at http://www.prognosis.com/petition so that your VOICE can be heard. The more voices, the louder the roar. So go there now and speak. SUPPORT this effort, and tell all of your friends to do the same. Thanks for your help. -Rick /\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\ \****************** Richard S. Just remembered one little tidbit of *accurate* info (I forgot mention earlier) that a lot of you New Englanders (and others) would probably appreciate knowing: The reason why DT has played such places as Birch Hell (during the pre-ACOS, HftH and Ff96 shows) is cuz they didn't have a full-blown show to go with and they wanted to keep things more intimate. It's just that the bozos who run those clubs are a bit too money hungry and so try to jam as many people in as they can. Fret not, though, I was told they'll play bigger places when they start touring. I just wanted to throw my opinion on NUNO real fast. I got down to the music store early yesterday kind of psyched to get it. Well, I knew it would be quite different than Extreme but..... I've listened to it over and over and as much as I try to like it, I can't. I didn't like "Waiting for the Punchline" at first but it really grew big time on me and now I like it a lot but this Nuno cd just isn't great to me. It sounds too grungy at first. I like some of the slower tunes and a few of the harder stuff but overall it's a thumbs down. Maybe I'll change my opinion over time. I also got Mr. So&So "Compendium." It has a certain YES influence. It's laid back but the musicians are great and if you like Yes, I'd suggest you check them out. ANd....If I haven't mentioned it yet...CONCEPTION!!!! GREAT BAND!!!! Heavy, progressive, nice lyrics, tight, great high (but not TOO high) vocals. Really a good band that i'd highly recommend. Thanx Hector! I'd like to include Killing Hand from WDADU, and I'll call vocals on it. Between Charlie's studio version and James' live version (not to mention the tempo differences), I think a reworking would be GREAT. Let's not limit the songs just yet. Here's the list I've grokked from the 'jam (and hey, didn't I say I could coordinate? Let's keep it public for a while!): Guitars: Vince -- Mirror/Lie, Ytsejam Rip -- UAGM, Scarred Chris Ptacek -- ACOS Jake -- Erotomania Bass: Fernando Ma -- Erotomania, Voices Jonathan Dery (7 string) -- Just Let Me Breathe Chris Ptacek Keys: KorgX3 -- LTL, Metropolis, Scarred Drums: Anthony G. LaSorsa -- TTT, PMU Chris Ptacek Drummnstan -- UAGM Vocals: Jazzmin -- UAGM, Killing Hand, anything unclaimed Chris Ptacek Steve Z John Parmet -- "Whewww" (TTT); "Please Don't Go" (ACOS) Syrinx -- Mirror/Lie Other noises: Jazzmin -- shaker box on Metropolis; harmonica Bruce Forst (polka arrangement) CiaW Dale Newberry -- horns, trombone Technical stuff: Hector Crisantes: Studio in Arizona Mark Peters -- 8 Track Adam & Dr Drew -- CD Burner Jazzmin -- photography and cover art! MONEY: one very nice lurker with a cool .sig! (sorry, I don't think the Marlboro points would help, but thanks anyhow) I do see a couple of songs that are gathering support -- UAGM and Erotomania. Metropolis also seems to be popular. Since we're not in a hurry, and it would be cool to include everyone possible (who says we couldn't have three drummers on one song?), let's just keep making suggestions and then we'll start paring down the list. As for the .wav file transfer thingie... it's a cool idea, but I think it would require too much extra equipment for too many people, and besides a Ytsecon (an ytsecon?) would really ROCK -- literally! Keep on jammin'! This COULD really, really happen! Oh, and Mike B, would you puleeze ask the band if this would be okay...? Thanks! b) if you send tapes, how can you assure that everyone will play exactly what is supposed to be played (how do you know one guy will play a song at 132mm and another one at 133mm- big difference) c) who the fuck do you get to produce/compile the shit together? where does one get the money to find someone to produce/compile said recordings? anyways, the last leg of my i/w thoughts goes out to mr. carlos "why was it in spanish" alfaro. why, you ask.....well, because it tasted a lot better going down than it did coming up. actually, i just felt like it. if you really want to take the labor to transcribe my review into coherent english, be my guest. parle-vous francais? off we are.... #6 under a glass moon, or my ass sticking from under a window, or the bafu-asked-jp-what-it-was-about song. something about apocalypse, right? i suck at lyric interpretation. for someone who wanted to hear or feel that aggressiveness like in pmu, this is just heaven. i love the beginning of this tune. guitar sounds incredible- not like plastic. real subtle kevin-isms that we all have come to adore. portnoy's just raping the drums. but myung, wherefore art thou? so low in the mix. prater, that'll be 2 minutes in the box for double attempt to spear (anyone else notice that that is a real nhl penalty called quite a bit this year? what gives?). pantera, anyone? and i love those tritones (shortly before labrie enters). speaking of vocals, labrie does a good job for the most part (anyone else hate how the chorus sounds- especially, live? jeez). maybe they should have brought in devon townshend (as much as i hate him). but the fact that i only marginally enjoy james voice here is irrelevant to the fact that this song just rocks too hard. 2nd verse- why do i keep thinking david lee roth's "skyscraper"? is it that steve vai clean tone, or is it the fact that both songs are in f sharp (or some form of it)? very nice transitions from smooth cool lines to their best impersonation of trent reznor. instrumental section- i love the 1st part, where jp is just playing a few notes really and kevin is carrying it with that coolio line, to be followed by the rest of the band, into a monster solo by jp- perhaps even his best guitar solo. very tasteful. i forget that he's playing fast, sometimes, trying to get his yngwie-isms and vai-isms. keyboard solo. a fast 7/8. impressive. i wish i could play keys like that. the perfect solo sound. that piercing korg sound. ahh, a work of art. the song finishes very nicely also. ok, so this may be the best written song, as opposed to what i've said so far, but this is subject to change, after all. 777777777777777777777777777777777777777777777777777777777777777777777777777777 7777777 wait for sleep so we've been anally assualted by this heavy stuff (save for another day and surrounded), and all of a sudden, another ballad. irish sounding. let's do a jig, boys and girls. a broken-legged jig, that is. so the words are incredible (i think kevin's strength lies in his lyrics), and i'm waiting for it to get louder. where's porntoy? fuck that shit up, boyyeeeeeeee!!!!! but no. never happens. thank god. saved a brilliant song. the perfect segue to the last song. anytime i hear the last song of this album played live without wfs, i get pissed. not right. sucks. ugly. poor. kinda like having sex and in the middle of it, you just stop because you're bored or tired. no fucking way.... 8 is GRRRRRRREEEEEEEEEAT! learning to live. you can't let that happen. i mean, going from the sweet rhythms of wfs into the polyrhythmic craze at the beginning of ltl (note that the keys part stays just about identical thru all of it, a la mirror or acos). makes me think of doom when i hear the intro. i think it's a little bit too long- they were starting to overstate themselves before they hit the verse. but oh, that 1st verse. again, awesome transition from loud to soft. i will say this now- james is fucking amazing on this song. from beginning to end. awesome use of dynamics. as a matter of fact, this might be the most dynamics i've heard yet. boys and girls writing music, always remember the fundamentals- without dynamics, it just sucks. without things being kept interesting, you get bored. it sucks. then no one buys it. no likes it. then they're forgotten. well, i think they're getting forgotten anyway, but oh well.... anyone else also think that the 1st verse makes great sex music? anyways..... "listening to the city...."..........powerful. fucking powerful. tritones. heavily distorted guitar. anger! the boiling cauldron! fuck you! your mother sucks my cock! hell! satan! so bitter, so sad. i love that part. one i reached for love and now i reach for life. "another chance to lift my life." this section here, ladies, gents, goons, is what we call "text painting." we went from an angry heavy part, to a part that first of all, is in major, and you DO get a feeling of another chance, right? text painting. instrumental seciton- again, i think this may have been a TAD overdone. great tony levin bass by mr. myung. great dynamic play. acoustic guitar, which i wish jp would do live too. drums sound awesome. building up to something. where are we going? going, going, going....to probably the most amazing 3 or 4 minutes of recorded dt out there. the solos and interplay fascinate me. team play. i never thought of jp as a guitar hero until awake. never really thought of any of them as these monsters. the wfs re-entrance is beautiful. beautiful how it gets restructured to fit another song. the last chorus just rocks my head. loud, but not too aggressive. it's really subtle. it's very final. you know this is the end of the album. the end of the show. the last song they'll EVER play live, be it this year, or 20 years from now. and the end itself. one of those parts i wish could loop forever. in my car, i always sing a long (whoooaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa WHOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooo -OOOOHHHH) at the top of my lungs. powerful. so that does it for now, i think. i have more issues to pick up on, but i'll do those later. ytsegoon ********************************************************************** david yoichi kobayashi binghamton university email_address_removed "i am a dream...a day rushes by but i do not. if i am cut i can be stitched. if i am gray i can be brightened. if i am broken i can be mended. if i am dull i can be sharpened. i am resilient." -the anatomy of man ********************************************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Feb 1997 02:40:15 -0500 (EST) From: email_address_removed To: email_address_removed Subject: finally, and other issues Message-ID: ok, that felt good getting that shit about i/w out of me. i'll be doing awake sooner or later. lastly, the issue of the drum triggers. i dunno.....you see, i can't tell the difference. it sounds like any other snare drum (i guess perfect pitch doesn't equal perfect drum accuracy or something). i don't see a big problem with it. i think prater did an ok job, considering that dt was a small band at the time. granted, i do like the idea that baron and purdell did a lot better, but i don't hate prater like some people here do. oh well. onto other things....... i picked up the new bowie (taanks for the recommendation, whoever said it). and reeves gabrels is a fucked up guy! wow. love it so far. verrrrrrrrrrrry well done. and to think, fucking bowie produced it! sheesh. i guess he learned from brian eno. speaking of crackheaded guitarists, wondering if anyone here is into ronald shannon jackson and the decoding society. it features one of my favorite guitarists- his name is vernon reed, or read, or reid. something like that. wondering if anyone had any cool tips for stuff to pick up. my wfs transcription business is up and running again. email me privately for more info. peace. ytsegoon ********************************************************************** david yoichi kobayashi binghamton university email_address_removed "'so speak, i'm right here', she used to say to me not a word, not a word...." -j. petrucci ********************************************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Feb 1997 03:00:43 EST From: email_address_removed (Kevin J Richard) To: email_address_removed Cc: email_address_removed Subject: DT tribute Message-ID: I will do the vocals on Erotomania, I know it's tough but I think I just might be able to pull it off.
