And now back to your regularly scheduled programming..... ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Feb 1997 19:36:11 -0600 From: "A.R. This was one of the entries on the latest SFK, a weekly AOR posting. Quite a bit of it is useless, but there's usually good info on the bigger prog/power metal bands. I've seen material on Queensryche, Fates Warning, and Crimson Glory here recently. Anyway, just thought someone might be curious. I mean, maybe he's grown (not nec. good or bad) since his earlier, higher-pitched days and that's not what he wants to do vocally. It's probably a combo of all of the stuff mentioned (maybe he doesn't want to sing higher because it's harder because he's older and because he smokes, blah, blah), but I still like his style. GO RYCHE!!! Can't wait until March! It's good to hear that James is taking care of himself, and I'm sure that whenever the album arrives, it WILL be "good to hear" ! Hasta folks... --------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | | Rich Rochelle | | web: http://www.public.asu.edu/~geddy | | | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------:wq ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Feb 1997 19:48:13 -0600 From: Swanson To: email_address_removed Subject: Metropolis Message-ID: Hey, I've been working my ass of learning music for our first performance of metropolis this Saturday. It is just an evaluation show for us to get feedback on our arrangement. The music is not tight yet, and I'm not sure that spectators are even allowed. Still, if you are dying to see Metropolis performed by a percussion ensemble, we will be performing at Range View high school(which is in Aurora, CO) at 3:30pm. I, personally suggest waiting at least for the regionals a week from saturday. I will keep you posted about time and place when that info is availible to me. And, hey, stick around and say hi if you do drop by. I'm the dude with the long brown hair and a pinstripe suit in the front line of pit. And I'll keep you all posted on the regional competition information. Jon Case ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Feb 1997 23:06:35 -0500 (EST) From: email_address_removed To: email_address_removed Subject: images and words, 5 years later- part one Message-ID: hi there, i've been meaning to do this to pass the time between my next dt cd, which utopianly would be a new dt album, but more realistically, one of mr. bahr's creations. i got the idea to do this after i pulled up i/w for the first time in a while. and i wanted to really make some comments, and ask some questions and yadda yadda yadda. here goes. i guess this will be a song by song analysis of what i think and what not. if you get bored, tell to go away, and maybe i'll go. whatever. epilogue- the scenario- here is this little-known band called dream theater, with this new singer called james labrie, and they want to prove something. they wanna prove they can play with the big boys. i imagine they hoped this would be the album that would spawn millions of of fans, crazed fans, who eventually become hardcore fanatics and join some "internet mailing list" called the "ytsejam". what the fuck is a ytsejam, anyway? anyways, they really did want to something big, i think. i hope. song one- pull me AHundAH, or the hamlet song. whoa, what a cool guitar sound. it's so simple....and nice little orchestrative touch, mingling drums, and than this cool synth line that makes my watch virbate against the coins on my desk.....and then it builds up to this louder flurry of theme a.....i'm going to like this no-name band......and then there's that awesome part. the distorted guitar in the begininng that sounds like eeyore taking a shit. it's so fierce. with this dobule-bass drum. god, when was the last time i heard someone play 2 bass like that. lars? neil? one thing i instantly pick up is the sense of urgency in the music. that little sequence right before "watch the sparrow falling..", actually that whole segment of the whole song. the thrash part. why do i keep thinking "living colour"? the chorus- i love that part. the vocal harmonies are just fascinating. this prater guy did a good job capturing the vocals and the guitar, i think. i think the keys sound is a little cheesy, and the drums sometimes sound too much like an august thunderstorm. so the band goes off on this frenzy of mixing themes and subthemes, getting pretty crazy, and then it gets chilled out again. i think the essence of the song, the defining part to me is in 2 parts. the keys solo before jp's guitar solo, and the double bass attack in the last chorus. so desperate. so angry. so strong. i think moshing is sooo stupid, but with this song, i feel like kicking people with my docs. bashing my head. just going nuts. this is song fascinates me in that it maintains this level of intensity virtually all the way through. myung also impresses me. pretty laid back, but just playing the right things. and then the end comes and then it song 2- another day the token mtv ballad. i really don't like the beginning of the song. i mean, the lyrics are good, and what's that word i want......poignant? it's cute. it's pretty. yet after doing my best impression of a disgruntled postal worker and killing 390 people, this song, come on now? oh wait, i feel it getting a little more tense. that spyro gyra sax guy does some nice touches. but i still don't like it til.......it.....reminds me of "these dreams" by heart. ok....they're getting desperate again. getting louder. "better to save the mystery..." i LOVE that quote. now jp's jerking off again. god, for some reason this sounds so much better live. so we've reached the end quickly. i liked that. quick song. good. sax solo is awesome, and then portnoy does that little off beat triplet thing at the end. i must have rewound and listened to that over about a million times to figure what was going on there...this porn toy guy is pretty nifty with those drums. he looks like a poodle-meets-geek, though. thank god for facial hair. speaking of the pics, anyone else think that they look like.......pretty girls? is this vixen? kevin might be the only one who looks somewhat like a rocker. and don't even start me off on petrucci with his egyptian cross shirt. anyway, onto song numero tres, the taking the time song. starts so ominously, and then there's this polygamous, er, polyrhythmic thing going on with the rhythm section. pretty inventive. and then, AHHHHHHHH. the double bass thing. so this is the song they wrote together....boy, labrie sounds pissed. good!!!! someone shit on his beer some more. lots of guitar textures here. petrucci's playing really smart. not too much, but really lush chords that fit beautifully with myung's runs. the main thing i've picked up in the first three songs on the album is that constantly high level of intensity. this is the song that comes closest to messing it up. i've never been able to like it. i mean, it IS intense, but popeye is something that shouldn't belong in prog rock. ok, ok...now they're cooling it off. good, right before the instrumental section. and what did that lithuanian guy say? geez. at least if they get samples, it would help if they spoke english. seriously, the instrumental section is really good. really tight. tightness is important in prog rock/metal/polka. beautiful dual runs. man, how long have they been playing together? of all 8+ minutes this song has to offer, this is my favorite part. it does kick. and then the last chorus kicks in, and the cute piano, and then they all jerk off on themselves again with the jamming. yadda yadda yadda. i'll stop here for now. i really would like to hear opinions and further observations. what attracts you to ttt, or ad, or pmu? the rest of the album will come in further parts, as i similarly may. enjoy. chew it. digest it. and swallow. ytsegoon ********************************************************************** david yoichi kobayashi binghamton university email_address_removed "'so speak, i'm right here', she used to say to me not a word, not a word...." -j. petrucci "paddy, what a wonderful death abyss- tell the others." - d. bowie ********************************************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Feb 1997 00:23:00 -0500 From: Omar Torres To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: OK - my turn now! Please don't start with the solar powered car made entirely our of sanitary napkins type comments (or the more obvious sicko things that people have amusingly hinted at on #ytsejm ) The best I can figure is that it's the red carpet, like at a major award show, as in GrammyEmmyOscarAcademyBob's bowling ceremonies. The "until everybody smiles" would make sense in 2 ways: either people like you until shortly after the awards and then they're dying to put down your movies/cds etc (i.e. hootie or Kevin Costner) because you're old news or a one hit wonder OR 2). They realize you're the six fingered man and they're so glad that they've been able to find you because Bob's last name was Montoya and you killed him for the six fingered bowling ball... and that's about enough outta me... (That was to accentuate the double bass work that Lars did at the time) Also, did Jason Newstead suck then? They totally left him out of the mix. I can't hear any bass in the album, if your car or home stereo has a great set of tweeters on it, you can listen to the album. Just shut off the bass because the bass drum is so compressed that you can't feel it at all. I would like to see the album remastered and remixed. Was this album digital or analog? Same with guitar players. I think the ratio is about even if you judge it that way. I think the guy in control of the PA system is the most responsible culprit. The guy in control of our band was the drummer. We could be in a little 10'x10' room and he'd still amp his drums. Beau (guitar) and I (bass, keys, and/or vox) could never hear ourselves at all. It's why I got my own 150 Amp cabinet and stood in front of it to hear myself. I'm surprised I can still hear. :P Laterz!
