Braindance is also a damn cool band... i hear they have a new one coming out in the next cuople months... i'm definitely looking forward to it. they're somewhat of a hybrid Goth/Prog band, who sound to me something like Lycia, Ozric Tentacles, and Mastermind jamming together... BD is one hell of an original band, there's nothing else that sounds quite like them. Who cares? I mean, we all love DT to death whether JL hits an occasional sour note. JL is as much a part of the DT sound as the other guys, so lets give him a break. Now I'm off my soapbox. I listened to the Majesty demos about a couple of months ago and I thought that Collins sounded a lot like, dammit, now I can't remember if it was Arch or Alder. One of the two anyways. I sort of liked Collins vocals. I didn't think that they were all that bad. JL IS the man though. I've said enough. I have heard only good things about the demon, so I think that will be my choice. Bridge or neck position? I think I'll replace that cruddy single coil I have too. I hate stock pickups... As for LtL live, I've seen them play it at three of the four shows I've been to. The first time was at the very first show I saw, the IaW tour in Agawam, MA. It was as an encore. The had played every song from the album except that one, so I figured it would be the encore. Kevin came out and played a nice keyboard solo, which in hindsight may have been Eve, I didn't hear Eve until last year when I got the TSM single. Then the band came out one by one and LtL kicked in. The acoustic guitar interlude: Petrucci put some kind of echo effect (I hesitate to say delay) on his electric and played the interlude note for note. I remember the sound being distinctly similar to Alex's live La Villa Strangiato first solo on the Show of Hands tape, instead of the volume swells he used echo. At the other two shows, BH in 12/95 and 12/96, he played it differently. Though I don't remember how he played it in 12/95, at the last show, he completely eliminated the interlude in favor of an extended solo. Not a shred solo, very soulful. Still, as the interlude is my single favorite section of any Dream Theater work, I would like to see it played (are you reading JP?). But then again, who am I to tell Gods what to do, I'm a mere mortal. Oops! There I go putting them on a pedestal again. I hope you don't choke on my sig. The 'searing solos' are actually very basic tapping stuff... nothing impressive. The only relation they have w/ Mr. Malsteem is the classical influence, but they do it differently. There's a lot of orchestration going on, and most of the vocals are done by a choir. The rest of the singing is done by the guitarists and the drummer. The guitarist unfortunately grunts, Sepultura style. I actually like Sepltura, but the grunting dowesn't fit in this style IMO. The drummer however sings very well and does some cool harmonies w/ a guest vocalist. In general, the grunting doesn't bother me too much, because when it's done, it's usually one line grunting, one line singing.... and the grunting is really not so savage like Sepultura...It doesn't have that much growl in it, it's more like aggressive shouting. There's only one song where it bugs me. In general, the CD rocks...it's basiccaly heavy detuned stuff, and the choir fits in really well with that. In addition there's some very beatiful classical interludes here and there.... but it's not progressive, in the odd time sigs, shredding, kinda way. But it is very cool and different. One thing, they're part of the Black Metal thing that's hitting Germany, but as far as I can tell, they're not satanic, just dark. But Idon't really know about that, I just know I like the music. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Jan 1997 16:16:53 +0100 (MET) From: email_address_removed.se (Lars Nilsson) To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: 220 Volt Message-ID: >Speaking of Sweeden, does anyone else remember a Sweedish metal band from >about '89 called 220 Volt? That's why we have a Theater arts department here and I used to see movies at the UC Theatre regularly in Berkeley. The real difference in US English is this: If one wishes to sound intellectual, snooty and pretentious, or British, one should use Theatre. If ya wanna sound like a normal American, go with Theater. note: the above two sentences are humor, but there is a valid point being made in them. Namely that Theater is in all cases the standard US spelling, and Theatre is only used if one wished to project an image other than that. Personally, this one prefers Theatre as a general spelling, but uses Theater because it's the standard spelling.
