I heard a soundfile, and while it sounds nothing like Extreme musically, I like it. I like his voice...and his guitar playing can't be too horrid, though I hear he's not soloing as much. I am not a signer nor I know you've taken a lot of heat for this, Steve, but I have to agree with you. I also got an autograph from James Labrie that was sloppy and really just substandard all-around. He is a great SINGER, but as a signer I think that he has alot of work to do. James Byrd's Atlantis Rising is very close to Fifth Angel material, but I'm not exactly sure what the material on Octoglomerate or the new James Byrd Group album are like. (You can hear a wav file at Heady Metal.) I've seen Ken Mary's name here and there (drums) but I can't recall exactly where at the time. If anyone has a copy of the first Fifth Angel disc, or knows how to obtain one, I would be eternally in their debt. (Yes, I'm talking cash, here.) I looked all over the place for Nuno's (and it's just Nuno now, ala Cher, etc.) CD all over the other day, and just today found out that it won't be released until Feb. 11th. Doh! It's called Schizophonic, so keep those eyes peeled! It should be good stuff. I found an old tape of some .ra files of JP's stuff off the Mesa/Boogie page and kinda got into it.... Is the Necromonicon game out yet? In Japan? Anywhere? Anyone have news on this? Neil? :) Thanks in advance. I guess that's all for now. Buhbye. If he was at the Birch Hill show and JLB said it was very likely he would produce, don't y'all think they would have made an official descision by now? I've had Burning My Soul in my head all day (I can clearly remember lots of parts of the new songs because I went to two Fix For '96 shows) and I just want to travel forward in time, buy the disc, travel back in time, thank Doc for the use of the DeLorean, and crank the hell out of it! I also can't wait to be floored by the 27 minute extavaganza that Metropolis pt. 2 is rumored to be! But anyways, If anyone knows about Paul please speak up. -Jon Dery ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Jan 1997 11:50:51 -0600 From: Jeff Hayes To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: Fifth Angel NDTC Message-ID: Hey Dave, Uh I think you got a little confused or something. Ken Mary is a great DRUMMER. He's actually pretty much a studio session dude who has worked in the past with Don Dokken's solo stuff as well as David T. Chastain and someone else I can't recall right now. Anyway, Fifth Angel is/was awesome. Their firts lead guitarist, James Byrd, has put out several albums on Shrapnel. I own all of them. James Byrd's Atlantis Rising: Really cool 80's metal-type sound. Very Euro-metal sound. Similar to Fifth Angel's self titled album ( Man I can't find this on CD anywhere. But I do own the tape and have "Time Will Tell" on CD ) James Byrd: Octoglomerate - All instrumental guitar ( Classical guitar, acoustic, Euro-classical metal guitar ) The James Byrd Group: Features Robert ( Uhhhhh, what the hell is his name, the guy who sings on Lynch Mob's 2nd CD ) oh yeah Robert Mason. Pretty cool tunes including a cover of Hendrix's "Dolly Dagger". No instrumentals but cool guitar anyway. James Byrd: Son of Man: Instrumental guitar tribute to Christianity. Really beautiful in parts, heavy as heck in others. More Euro-metal and melody throughout! Currently in the works: James is in the studio with a full orchestra as we speak, I believe, recording an instrumental metal album. Just a side note, James is one of the only guitar players that Mr. Malmsteen has ever whole-heartedly endorsed. Although YJM was the man who caused me to pick up guitar, his attitude at most times does leave something top be desired, so perhaps this endorsement means not a heck of alot to you, but it seems to say something about the guy to me. Incidentally, if you were referring to the guitar work on the "Time Will Tell" CD, I knbow James wasn't the guitarist... it was Ed Archer, I believe. Also, a while ago I heard a rumor that before Steve Perry got back with Journey, Ted Pilot, Fifth Angel's singer, was in the running for lead vocalist for Journey. Incidentally, if you are not familiar with Fifth Angel, Ted attended vocal lessons with the same teacher as Geoff Tate of Queensryche. The similarities in styles are pretty apparent, and although I am a huge QR fan of stuff before PL, I like Ted better than Geoff. He just seems to have more power. Hope this helped! Message-ID: I think this may a have place on the JAM: I am looking to purchase a 4-track...Preferrably a TASCAM 424-mkII. I know they go for about $500-600 new, but I was wondering if there's anyone out there wanting to part with a close-to-new, mid-to-high-end 4-track. Don't wanna spend more than the above rate, but I figured I'd check to see if anyone wanted to get rid of one before going to Guitar Center or DJ's here in Chicago. I am eager to begin learning the technical side of recording and being able to flesh out ideas in my free time this winter. It also makes a great practice tool when jamming/singing along with some favorite recordings. THANKS! I can not overstate the importance "Perspectives". I played this thing to 5 different people this week......ALL of them broke down into tears at point or another. This is an amazing ability that millions of musicians would love to have. I have TONS of 80's and 90's solo "shred" albums. NONE of them and I mean N O N E of them come close to "Perspectives" !!! ( including Jason's previous work ) Alot of people will read this and say : " yeah right, It's just another self- indulging shred album,...... whatever ! " NO.....It's not even in that ballpark!!!! There isn't very much guitar playing....it's mostly orchestral related material. Jason can express more with ONE song than most musicians can with whole album. ( can you tell that I'm trying everything I can to promote this album ?) Some of it is aggressive Some of it is intensely sad Some of it very upbeat and hopeful Some of it is haunting..............he runs the complete gamete of emotions ! Jason poured his whole heart and soul into this recording for everyone to see & hear !!! If I was a billionaire, I would buy 10 million copies and hand them out for free at record stores. Do whatever you can to find this CD. BELIEVE me.....it's very much worth the trouble !!! IT TRULY IS A ONE OF A KIND ! This album typifies everything that TRUE music and artistic expression should be. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Jan 1997 16:13:34 -0700 From: "Vincent G. Note: Nuno isn't playing much guitar on the album, but he does most if not all of the singing. Their sound is a little bit heavier on this one, mainly due to the addition of a second keyboard player who uses a lot of heavy Hammond organ sounds.
