Tony ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Jan 1997 18:34:11 -0500 From: Steve Godbout To: email_address_removed Subject: Labrie bashing thread Message-ID: Hi all! I am disapointed to see that with my first post to this jam, I have managed to play on a sensitive issue. One wich was not really intended. I feel I might have to make a few clarifications here... I for one have never had the great opportunity to see a live performance from DT. That will be remedied as soon as the next tour starts. So, my only base for judging the live performance of this band, wich I consider to be the absolute best I've ever heard, are the recorded shows available on either official "live" releases of the band or bootlegs. Between these two means, I observed a discrepancy that raised a question in my mind, question that I thought worth asking on the jam. It seemed to me that James' signing was so much better on "official" live albums that these albums MIGHT have been overdubbed. THAT was my simple question; "Has there been any know overdubs on LATM and ACOS?" (c.f. jam #2203). As it turns out, there are reasons other than overdubbing wich can explain the differences I heard. Many jammers have replied to me both by private E-Mail and on the jams with their their opinions on this and one thing is clear; Labrie's studio performances are outstanding. He has a really great voice and to sing the way he does must be really hard physically. I have also had replies telling me of shows in wich he sang to perfection. So, one might not have to expect perfect signing at every show. My problem is I do not own any bootleg on wich he has sang to my expectations. However, that does not prevent me from truly appreciating the band and their signer. I am not a signer nor do I pretend I could do better but one does not have to be a musician to appreciate, and have an opinion on, music. I had no reason to go on a Labrie bashing spree and that is not what I did. Not at all. In fact, I seem to remember such a thread a year or so ago, arguing of Dominici's and Labrie's qualties as signers. To set the record straight on my opinions on this matter, I will say that I think that Labrie's singing on studio albums is absolutely exquisite. I have yet to hear a truly good live performance but I now know that they exist (thanks to the jam). I am still in the dark as to wether or not there was overdubbing on LATM and ACOS and that question might stay forever unanswered but I still felt it worth asking. SO, that's that. The question was about overdubing and NOT about Labrie's signing abilities. Hope nobody was overly and unduely offended.... Hey there, Jon Finn is the man! No H in his name by the way :) His group (Jon Finn Group) has one cd called, "Don't Look So Serious" on Legato records. It's pretty easy to find at most big stores. He's truly a teacher when it comes to guitar. He can play any style and emulate any player. He's almost got too many chops. His group mixes all types of music in a rock context, much like DT except all instrumental. Tons of chops, however there's also a good humorous aspect and lots of funky stuff to keep things fresh and down to earth. All members of the band are professors at Berklee which is a definite bonus. ANYBODY who is a DT fan should pick up this cd. Tons of variety and DT-ish chops along with great melodic content. Even if you don't like instrumental stuff, get it. adam ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Jan 1997 19:15:03 -0600 From: Michael Kohne To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: tellus Message-ID: At 12:29 PM 1/17/97 -0800, times_100_ wrote: >yeah, tellus is a great band, they are friends of mine here in dallas. >they used to not particularly like dream theater, but i opened their >eyes. :) they are huge king's x, rush, and galactic cowboys fans. Message-ID: Greetings, While preparing for my radio show tomorrow, I listened to many alboms brought up here. Here are my findings. Helloween's "Keeper of the Seven Keys 1-2" are not all that interesting. I now know where Geoff Tait comes from, but it is obvious to me that Helloween Is influenced by Iron Maiden and not much else. Sure, there's some good shredding, but it sounds all the same to me. Nitro's OFR is the model of glam shred-metal. Though I admire Michael Angelo to no end, he doesn't know how to make a melody shine. The one accoustically-introduced song was good, though. I could never be as technically profficient as Angelo, no one could, but he just doesn't know when to breathe. "Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner" from Maiden is awsome, too. I like it better than most of their stuff. Last, I just couldn't find "Play With Me" on Extreme's self-titled release. The albom is awsome and Nuno is moreso, but I want my song. I might have skeppid it in my rush through the record, but I don't think so. Looks like it's gonna be a good show tomorrow. Erotomania will be the featured guitar instrumental. Be well. It mentioned how DT is taking a more "Song by song" >approach where they play as a band for one song, rather instrument by >instrument for the whole album, to create a vibe and a more personal song. > YES! > This is EXACTLY what I wanted to hear! Although I&W and Awake are >my favorite albums of all time, this is the one aspect that was missing. I >am bothered by the process of breaking up each instrument and just pasting >them together. The result is the sound of many DT songs that sound like 5 >instruments going at it, rather than one cohesive whole. Well, as nice as that would be, it'd be difficult to do, and even more difficult to convince the engineers, producer, etc., to do that. The only kinds of music that are recorded all together are orchestras, live recordings (duh), and jazz/improvised music (because a lot of that relies on band members giving each other visual cues as to what's going on). Recording instruments separately for all other kinds of music has become and industry standard for two reasons: it's easier, and it makes a cleaner recording. Recording everyone one-at-a-time makes it easy to do retakes and punch-ins. Each part is recorded on a separate track (or several) and can be modified once the recording is done (ie run thru signal processors). If everything is recorded at the same time, when one person screws up, everyone has to do it again. And again. And again! That's because of microphone bleed. If everyone is playing together in the same room , the vocalist's microphone is going to pick up the drums, the drum mics are going to pick up the guitarist's amp, etc., etc. It causes a lot less stress to do everything separately. Mixing down is a big part of what comes out to the public...there's a technique of creating "space" between instruments which probably causes the separation you don't like. Perhaps, with the new producer, that'll change. :) >Date: Mon, 20 Jan 1997 15:20:40 -0600 >From: Randall Braun >Faggot: isn't that something you stick in your mouth & suck??? >Well... isn't faggot a slang term (Anglish) for cigarette??? It's been a long time since i've posted, or even read the jam. this past saturday, the 18th, my band had a big gig at this place called the black orchid. We had the 2ND BIGGEST DRAW that the club has ever had. (that's the personal gratification part) but anyway, before we went on, JR, the lead singer, gave a us a little talk which really impacted me and i think would be good to share with y'all. the gist of it is that music is a spiritual thing, not a competition. we're not going out there to blow away the other bands or to show them up, we're there to share music with the audience. music is the only truly spiritual thing which humans have control over; it is not physical at all, but purely spiritual; it's the one thing we have in common with God or any other supreme being. You have to let go of just playing your instrument, plucking the strings or hitting the drums. you have to let the music take over, let it flow through your body, let it control your movements and your actions. basically, music is the shit and a bag of chips!
