Ray Gillen was a recent topic on the Black Sabbath Mailing List and nowadays here. It really looks like he died of AIDS. I have a copy of the Sun Red Sunīs only CD. Only 4 of the 8 songs of that CD was sung by him. Sun Red Sun style remembers the beggining of Anthrax :) Al Romano from Red Sun Red was working with Belladonna after Joey's split with Anthrax. -------------------------------------- * EDDY M * email_address_removed.au Beat Magazine Rock n Hard column Melbourne, Australia -------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Jan 1997 00:43:21 -0500 (EST) From: Jeremy Kube To: email_address_removed Subject: Matt Sorem and stuff Message-ID: Well, I have been out of touch for quite some time now (working OT and playing the ol' drumset you know how it is) anyways, I wanted to ask a couple of things: 1. Unrelated to DT, is Matt Sorem still with Guns and Roses? I heard that they reunited and were working on some new material, is that true. If it is, is Matt Sorem on the project? He is an incredible drummer (despite his past musical endeavors) and I was just curious as to what he was doing now. Respond direct please. Lets help keep unrelated topics off the jam. 2. I am also curious as to what the status is with the new DT album? Is it 2 CD's or is it one? Who is the producer? When is the planned release date? 3. I am mindless when it comes to the keyboard player for DT. I forgot. (please don't shoot me!) I know he played for Deep Purple for a while. What albums did he play on, or was he just a fill in? I saw him live and he was just as good as Kevin and he was really energetic. I know he will fill the seat well. 4. Don't call me an asshole but is Dream Theater losing (some) of their progressiveness so that they can attract more fans. I saw them in concert and I heard some of the new material and it seemed less progressive. Maybe I'm wrong. Anyways, just for the record, I will like them no matter what they do. (unless they go alternative, but I NEVER see that coming!) 5. Another, unrelated topic. Is Jason Becker dead? I heard he was, wasn't what is the status? Let me know via e mail please. Thanks everyone. I will talk to you soon! Jeremy ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Jan 1997 00:44:13 -0500 (EST) From: Irene Raceu To: email_address_removed Subject: X bands... I remember seeing an autographed poster of them at the place I used to take guitar lessons at. It featured Roxy Petrucci (no relation to John... and also former drummer for Vixen). Apparently, she's from MI and took lessons at the same place. (Greg and Matt Bissonette did also... :) Pretty cool :) I really don't know if they were any good though... anyone know by chance? Hint: it's four letters long and it represents barely 20% of the guitar players out there. Twisted Sister wants to do it, and Queen will do it TO you. :) Long ago, Guitar World covered rock guitar exclusively because it was extremely popular and was what everyone was doing. You could get Van Halen and Whitesnake AND Ratt all at the same time. Is that what everyone is doing now? Is that what you'd LIKE everyone to be doing now? (I'd LOVE it if everyone was doing that now.) Would it surprise you if Dave Weckl showed up on the cover of Modern Drummer? He's not exactly considered a rock drummer like, say, Scott Travis. But who's Modern Drummer to shut out jazz drumming? Personally I don't have a problem with Guitar World covering other kinds of guitar, and I can't blame them for covering what's popular. I didn't say I LIKE what's popular (hahaha), but you might as well get mad at Converse for making that astronaut-looking revamp of the classic All-Star sneaker. I think it's butt-ugly. But people asked Converse for a new shoe, just like they ask GW for Foo Fighters transcriptions every day of the week. > I have bought two guitar magazines in the last year. Sorry. If I were a guitar transcriber in 1996, you can well bet I'd have given the public the Presidents Of The United States Of America. I'm interested in surviving and living as long as I can. I'll do alright transcribing Queensryche, Garth Brooks, or even Testament. But I'll do much better transcribing No Doubt, Oasis, or, (gulp!) Nirvana. The magazine gives the people what they want to see. If the only gauge the magazine has of what the people want to see is album sales figures and MTV, well shit, progressive metal takes a backseat to just about everything. See Metallica's Black Album, track #2. Geez Chris, now you got ME ranting... :) Bafu Vai ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Jan 1997 00:53:33 -0800 (PST) From: Steve Borzilleri To: Dream Thespians Subject: GW Top 100 Message-ID: "But this time I think it'd be better if I swim..." I bought the Guitar World "Top 100 Guitarists" issue last Sunday in Dulles Airport on my way back out here. I got to read it on the plane, and I think the sudden change in air pressure must have calmed me down somehow because I didn't agree with bits and pieces of the writing. But I think too many people saw the words "Top 100 Guitarists" and envisioned a list of the most capable guitarists of all time and skipped GW's introduction to the article... Guitar World had a pretty good explanation as to how they arrived at those top 100 guitarists. In a nutshell, their reasoning went like this: "It's not about ability, it's about influence." In my mind that's a pretty dead-on definition of "great" or "top" anything. Not what you can do, but who you've touched. Too many people use the word "great" to mean "better than good," when it doesn't have anything to do with comparison. Something truly "great" is "unique," not "better than that other guy." (more rhetoric from the rhetorical) John Petrucci is absolutely phenomenal, but he HASN'T influenced HALF as many musicians as Kurt Cobain. There, I said it, feel free to disagree, someone surely will. As has already been mentioned, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, and Eric Johnson made the list. I can think of a few other virtuosos who have just as many crazy or innovative licks and have been around just as long as those three guys, but they, for one reason or another which no one can quite put their finger on, haven't influenced the hordes of guitarists that those three have. On the subject of influencing other guitarists, Vai, Satriani, and Johnson just HAPPEN to also be technically brilliant. But technical brilliance is not a prerequisite for being a "great" anything. The only thing it's a prerequisite for is the confidence a lot of people can't feel or find about their music, not without pushing themselves to the level of Ultimate Master before they can even view themselves as "competent." I hate even talking to musicians like that. But this aspect is in no way what music is about, and it's not what Guitar World was aiming for. Proficiency can increase the ability to express, but it rarely changes the content of the expression. Keep in mind that there WAS a "virtuoso" section in this Top 100 list. The guitarists I've seen mentioned on this list that "should have made the list" were applicable to only two sections covered by GW, rock/metal and virtuoso. Guitar World can't cram every madman axeslinger into every category, and they aren't going to imbalance things by stuffing sixty guitarists into one section. Guitar World, like Guitar Player, tries to cover the World of Guitar, and as much as I hate reading about Chet Atkins or Muddy Waters, those guys play the instrument, and have influenced multitudes of aspiring young guitar players over several decades. They literally changed music and pushed it in a new direction. Several new directions. Speaking of guitarists named Johnson, a fellow named Robert Johnson made the list, too. Technically I can't say there's much about Robert Johnson that would make him an appropriate addition to Dream Theater. But if the keyword is "influence," I can't think of anyone above that man. Influence was GW's intent, they said it very plainly in the introduction, and I for one thought they reached their goal. Maybe we should write to GW asking them to do a Top 100 Guitarists Who Could Have Played The Role Of Jack Butler In The Movie "Crossroads." I'm sure we'd see Jason Becker, Shawn Lane, and Paul Gilbert on that list, and a few others that have been mentioned here... Maybe even MICHAEL... ANGELO... Make fun if you want, but I remember about 3 years ago in July or so I'd decided to take up guitar on a cheap Sears acoustic my Mom'd bought me for Christmas 8 years prior. Anyway, the first thing I did (after replacing the strings) was run over to the local supermaket and pick up a guitar magazine with a nice big picture of Kurt Cobain and co. on it. Back then all I'd listen to was Nirvava, Pearl Jam, Soundgarten, and whatever else was cool at the time. I thought it was incredible how the guitar tabs asociated with the frets on the guitar. Pretty much overnight, I was playing Smells Like Teen Spirit almost as good (gulp?) as Kurt on that crappy acoustic. If anything, it was a confidence booster. I went on after that to learn Pearl Jam, Soungarten, Metallica, etc, and started becoming seriuos about playing guitar. It seems as you grow as a musician, you're tastes in music begin to shift from where you were originally to the more talented players of the time. (Dream Theater, etc.) I don't think it's really fair to put down these bands that are polluting the airwaves, cuz I'm sure quite a few people (like me) have or will become serious musicians because of this. Maybe these people will rise up and dominate the scene in a couple of years. It's hard to tell. Anyway, I just want to let you know that these articles brought me up to where I am today, which isn't much, but I think I'm alot better off than I would have been trying to play Erotomania when I'd started.
