Personally, I prefer their second "Space in Your Face" and third "Machine Fish." All are great albums, but the debut doesn't get much spin time on my CD player. The last half of the debut is really cool, but I'd say a better representation of the band would be either SIYF or MF. The EP is cool, too, but it's more of a fan item...more for the fans, not quite a getting started into the Cowboys album... It's supposed to be the top 100 guitarists of all time, living or dead or retired. The list is broken up into sections, depending on the type of music and other categories (like the "viruoso" category). I only looked at the magazine at the bookstore for about 10 minutes, so I may have missed or glanced over some of the artists. I don't recall seeing JP, Criss Oliva, or Jason Becker on the list, amazingly enough. I *do* remember seeing some good but definitely not great guitarists who were included. It seems to me that it's not the list of the 100 greatest, but rather the 100-top-selling. I think it's a list more fitting in Rolling Stone rather than Guitar World. But then again, to my taste, GW has, for the last couple of years, shown a marked disinterest in covering the leaing edge guitarists and focusing instead on whatever artist is popular with MTV at the time (no, I don't want to know about what "great" guitar work Offspring incorporates into their music *hmph*). Don't waste your money. Read it at the library instead. -matej ------------------------------ Date: 10 Jan 1997 13:53:19 -0000 From: "Ken McWatters" To: email_address_removed Subject: Our Lady Peace, B. Adams, eMpTV (What, me have DTC?) Message-ID: Hey jammers, A few notes. I think DrummnStan asked if anyone had heard of Our Lady Peace. I seem to remember liking their song(s) that was out sometime last year. Didn't they do that song "Starseed"? One of the few songs on alternative rock radio that has ever made me want to airdrum. As far as Bryan Adams and whether or not his career is still intact: Unfortunately I've spent some time listening to a local adult contemporary station since it's the only station in Houston (incl. the local rock/alteracrap outlet) that isn't _extremely_ repetitive in its playlist.. e.g. you're guaranteed to hear songs like Dream On and Freebird every day on 3 different stations. Anyway, Mr. Adams has been getting airtime on that softer rock station. I don't like it all that much, but he's graduated to the "can do no wrong" status of Eric Clapton and Elton John on radio, apparently. I still really like EC and EJ, btw, don't get me wrong. Since I bought a CD player for my office, my radio listening time has gone down a lot, fortunately. Finally, we have this note: >i just mentioned u2 on the xmas disc, and if anyone's interested mtv's been >playing nonstop u2 all day because of the new disc due out march 4th. the >new song is pretty groovin', very dance-esque, but still sounds like a band >not a dj. i'll probably pick up the album, its real fun stuff :) That's pretty interesting. I'm not crazy about u2 or anything, but it's better than Alternacrap or cRap. I've noticed that mtv has been taking more chances lately, deviating from the norm, so to speak. You know how they broadcast a couple of hours of their new M2 network during the afternoon (and nighttime too, I think)? Over the holidays I saw, on the M2 show, the video for Rush's Half the World. The VJ said they always got a lot of requests for Rush. Could the tide be turning? Just maybe? I can't remember who first brought them up on the Jam, but describing them as a cross between DT and early Yngwie was dead-on. That's exactly how they sound. I do have one major gripe with the disk, the mixing. The keyboard player is obviously a big deal in the band, he formed them if I remember correctly. Subsequently, all the keyboards appear to be mixed louder. Through the entire disk I can bearly ever hear the bass. The guitar is a little easier to hear but not much. Don't get me wrong, the keyboarder is awesome, I just don't think it sounds much like a band, it sounds more like five guys that just happen to be playing instruments or singing in the same room at the same time. It is good stuff and I would recommend it to anyone that like Trilogy and WDADU. I would also like to put in plug for Jerrod at the Musicland in Ames, IA. He's on a one man crusade to get as many people listening to prog as he can. It's kinda cool having someone on the inside looking out for all of us Jammers. c ya' todd > > Last Monday I heard a song of Artension, a new prog rock band. They were amazing. 5 guys that play like 5 instruments each. A friend of mine who saw them live said they it was madness up on stage with them running around to pick up another instrument after playing one for a few measures. Does anyone know if they are still together? Do they have a CD? If so, where can I get it? At that time, they were a 3-piece band with one of the funkiest bass players I've heard. He used it more like a lead instrument than a rhythm insturment. They did lots of orginial material in their set, as well as some great covers. Picture this - a funky reggae heavy metal version of Madonna's "Borderline" with male vocals about 10-minutes long!!!! Yes, it can be done, and these guys did it impressively. Message-ID: Howdy, howdy! So I decided for the second time to go on the opinions of my fellow jammers and get myself a Savatage CD. I had looked for TSO, but apparently, NJ was sold out of them. I go to my local CD world, grab Ride the Lightning (finally), pick up Dead Winter Dead (they didn't have Streets), a couple used CDs and head to the counter. The guy there says to me: "I was going to buy this after I heard the TSO CD, but haven't gotten to it yet." I told him I was getting on on recommendation from 'friends' and because I couldn't find the TSO CD. He says: "Some guy was listening to our last copy today. It's opened, though. Do you still want it." Do I need to finish? Nice to see some courtesy out of the help... I like Dead Winter Dead. Won't say love yet. The band has a great sense of melody within the metal genre. The lead singer has a good voice, but I don't like his 'growl'. Does anyone else think he sounds a lot like Jon Bon Jovi? TSO is cool, the couple of songs I heard. More reviews to follow after I give a thorough listen to both. Someone said Queensryche isn't prog in their mind. I've always felt that when a band develops their style from one album to the next that this is an indication of progressivity. Just my thoughts. Yes the GFTPM Top 100 is bogus. Not only are Kirk and James considered one person, they are lumped in with Joe Perry and Brad Whitford! And Mustaine and Friedman are nowhere to be found. While I do agree that Cobain is nowhere near Top 100, I'm not so adamant about Corgan. I don't like the Pumpkins, but his writing style is very creative in some instances. Their jazz selctions omitted Kevin Eubanks, who IMHO is amazing! Best inclusions of the 100: Satch, Vai, Johnson, and Lifeson (that last one surprised me a bit). Worst omission: Where the hell was Petrucci! He is the best guitarist to come around since Nuno in Extreme. But then again, "the nineties bring new questions, new solutions to be found; I fell in love to be let down." I was flipping thru the liner notes to the live Gentle Giant album _Playing the Fool_, and his name popped out as the engineer. It sounds quite good for a late 70s live album, and the performance is amazing. Maybe this shouldn't be so surprising. Derek Shulman of Gentle Giant, later at Mechanic Records, was instrumental in DT's early history. (This is probably in the DT FAQ; check also the linear notes of WDADU;) On early engineers. Alan Parsons (Project) was the engineer on Pink Floyd's DSOTM and also, I believe, on the Beatles' Abbey Road, which shouldn't be surprising, since both were recorded at Abbey Road Studios. ------------------------------ End of YTSEJAM Digest 2173 **************************
