I first saw her play on the Disney Channel. It was kewl to see a violin player up there with a kewl band, ie: Sax, Guitar, Bass, Drummer, Small seated orchestra. Has a kewl, Pop oriented classical sound. Kinda different, but Tocatta and Fugue in D Minor really rocks! Sorry if these topics are old, but it all depends on how you look at it, either 2 days old or ten freakin' jams old. About Bafu's comments on performing someone else's music; I'm a classical guitar principle and can say from experience that it's not about doing something that thousands of people have already done, it's about learning how to make that music yours. I don't care if the definitive recording of Bach's Lute suite in E minor has already been recorded by John Williams, I learned it to see what I could do with it. I don't mean to sound like I took your comments too seriously, but it seemed like you gave no merit to the ability to perform someone else's music convincingly. Also don't discount learning someone else's music in order to increase your own ability. I don't know why I just wrote all that stuff, Bafu gets it anyway (by the way, how was that Eric Johnson video?). To answer Damon's question about why the guitar IS rock-n-roll. Well, it obviously has to do with that whole phallic representation thing. I know that's why I play the guitar. :) See ya, Scott Daugherty ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Dec 1996 21:56:43 -0700 From: "woot" To: Subject: oops Message-ID: I said: (I know responding to yourself isn't cool) >I just always thought that DT wouldn't feel it necessary to do something >that juvenile. After hearing a lot about this band, but never had heard them, I thought I would give them a try. Heck, I bought 5 CDs, and I was getting one for free. I chose, "Inside Out." All I can say is, WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love every track on this CD. It is incredible. A lot like DT, but different enough to have their own sound. I would like to thank all you 'Jammers who have talked about this band. If it were not for you guys and gals, I never would have found out about them. My next question is, which FW CD do I pick up next? I love the "sound", the melodies and "feel" of the songs on "Inside Out." I don't know what their other CDs sound like. Where should I go from here? Are there any I should avoid? Also, I'm sure there are some good FW sites on the WWW.... I would love to hear from you guys & gals. I am very pleased with Ivanhoe and here is my take on it. In MY opinion, if you take Images & Words and Awake, and stick them in a blender and mix them together, you have Ivanhoe. With a little edge on Awake since Ivanhoe's guitars are very crunchy yet the whole band is very melodic. Vocals are very good as well. So if you folks who haven't heard Ivanhoe like I&W and Awake, you can't go wrong with this cd! << I want to add a couple of things, especially the "you can't go wrond with this cd" part. Ivanhoe is kuul, BUT a) their songwriting is nowhere near DT's b) if you aren't into metal, don't even bother with them. They have elements of the usual German melodic metal stuff too. For a while Punk was the big thing, no keyboards whatsoever (talent?). Then digital keyboards became available for the average person, and POOF! Blondie. Of course, we soon found out that it had a heart of glass (sorry) and there was a backlash against overuse of keyboards. One of the nice things about prog is we get bands which make good use of more than one lead instrument. Can't we all just get along? Anyway, my opinion on this little jazz/fusion altercation is this: I don't think Coltrane is really fusion like the guys Rick mentioned are. He's kuul, but he's a lot tougher for a metalhead to get into than, say, Allan Holdsworth. Let me also recommend Brian Auger, a fusion organ player. He has a ton of albums (which all seem to be cheapies. . .the live disc, 3 records on 2 CD's, lists for $15). . .I have the new best of set, which ROCKS! Auger played on The Yardbirds' "For Your Love" and Donovan's "Season of the Witch" (at least, I think it was the Donovan version), and has played in bands with Rod Stewart and John McLaughlin. Coltrane is one of the greats, but his connection to DT's genre of music is indirect at best.
