Don't classical guitarists spend their days learning already written material? I am talking about keyboardists in the rock world, where guitar reins supreme. I can understand why guitarists are so scrutinized. There's so many of them, and a lot of them imitate what's already out there. Keyboardists are fewer in number and theerfore, what's to imitate? There are no keyboard gods like Van halen and Satch. so, you have almost brought your fate on yourself. Bigger heroes must stand on higher pedestals. After reading your repost of what I originally said, I understand how defensive somebody can get, but my whole premise has been stated time and time again. It's a respect thing. I respect you as a musician, Bafu. I respect JP, Vai, Van halen, Satch, and I don't know how many other guitarists. But look at all the substandard people who are idolized by guitarists. The guy from Bonjovi, for a while when Bonjovi was king, (bleh). Sorry, guys, he's not all that. Flame me if you want, Bonjovi fans, but the guy just writes cheesey love balads. Put him next to Vai, and he will be burried. Helll, put him next to Keith Emerson, and apples or oragnes aside, Keith will kick his ass on our cheesey instrument. And alternative is full of substandardism. Just pick up a guitar magazine. outside of the G3 tour, and the occasion Alex Lipheson story, what do you see? I will bet the top 40 alterna-guitarists. Who is the keyboard world going gaga over? Rap producers and dance musicians. What has the world come to? ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Dec 96 20:25:47 EST From: "Damon M. It's easier to learn to read music, because to listen to keyboard parts, which are usually burried in the mix, and try to learn them exactly is hell on earth. So, guitar is easier in that respect. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Dec 96 20:30:32 EST From: "Damon M. My gripe >is why keyboardists get the same respect guitarists get. You know, I think a lot of it has to do with image. Case in point: there was this guitar contest on KSJO 92.3 here in the Bay Area a year ago or so. Local guitarists came into the studio and played some licks and the listening audience would call in and vote. There was one guy who had a pretty cool tone--- kind of sounded like Pantera. The only thing was that he kept playing the same thing over and over and I didn't think he was that great skill-wise. This girl came in and she was a shred his pants off, IMO; she sounded like she took lessons from Eddie. But she lost, big time to this idiot!!! I wanted to call in and say that the audience were all smoking crack or something because she was *far* better. Only because he had this cool distorted tone did he win. So much for substance over style. I think it's much the same way with keyboardists; Keith Emerson notwithstanding, I think that most people respect guitarists more is that is "the cool thing to do". Kind of like why some women (present company excluded) like bands simply because they're attracted to bandmember X (I know someone like this. Sometimes I wonder if the only reason she likes DT is because KJL is good- looking). Well, Derek is kind of cute :^|> And Mikko, thanks a lot for pointing out that it's Fri. the 13th today!
