The music is good enough to buy, and Jason isn't stinking rich or something, and he really needs the cash. All of his albums are still available, so get them. They're not too expensive either, not even the latest one (US$ 25). Pleae guys, don't copy JB stuff to others. There are some NDTC topics that can be discussed on the jam that may eventually be relevant. For example, the Van Halen thread going on right now, is a relevant one....for one big reason...It's probably the biggest news in rock since Kurt Corbain offing himself....But....the VH topic has the potential for getting out of hand....like the unnecessary hype about "Load"..... > 3. call a fellow on the jam "motherfucker" and then say "I'm not flaming you" The word "Motherfucker" is actually very comical....I mean...I don't have to many friends and colleages with a mother that I would want to have sex with...so I can't help but laugh when I see the word "motherfucker" ....In all seriousness....If you want to precipitate a small flame war.....don't chocolate cover it......call someone a motherfucker....and expect consequences....(I.E. Well....first off......Welcome to the Jam. It's good to have you on board....Hopefully Im in the right by saying this, (basically repeating what I said above....) but the Van Halen split is far more considerable than news of a new Metallica release.......Also.....consider this too..... Imagine Van Halen embarks on their tour to support the greastest hits cd being released in the late fall.....It'll be the largest tour in years....because of all the hype with DLR in the group......what if DT could hook up with the tour for a leg or two, once the new album is released????????? Secondly, I must say, from the bottom of my heart and with no IMO's or smileys, that if you live in New York, then you suck. You just suck. That's all there is to it. If any of you pass up the opportunity to go to Derek Sherinian's birthday party then you, like, suck to the 10th power. ARGHHH!!!! Message-ID: Blame this on Ben: >Elaborate, please...if he had stolen a Dennis Chambers solo would they sound >like whatever bands he's played with? What makes up the healthy dose of Rush? Blame this on me: It certainly wouldn't mean that the ENTIRE band would sound like Dennis Chambers, surely. But neither is it something to slough off -- Portnoy, in my opinion, sounds more like Peart than any other drummer. Petrucci, with that arpeggiated-sus-chord-cum-wailing-soloist surely owes at least a little to Lifeson. Myung plays some pretty wild lines, some of which remind me of Geddy Lee with their use of the upper extensions of chords in a more aggressive framework, while some of his rooted playing is similar to some of Geddy's more recent work (though his sound and tapping approach remind me more of Sheehan). From a vocal standpoint, Dominici and LaBrie both sound quite different from Mr. Lee...but the tendency to pitch melodies towards the top end of the vocal range and the fact that there are some brain cells at work from a lyrical standpoint is reminiscent of Rush. And the extent to which the keyboards play a role in the arrangement of songs is similar between the bands -- though both Derek Sherinian and Kevin Moore are true virtuosos, where Geddy clearly is not. And time changes in aggressive music marked by imaginative arrangement, sharp lyrics, and outstanding playing? How much similarity are you asking for? Message-ID: to the folk who discussed kevin moore having more feeling than jl, i read that and said, "yesssssssss!!!"as the point was very clearly stated, it doesn't mean james sucks, but picture him trying to sing "blanket" off the km demo (btw, that is my favorite song of his, period). on the flip side, picture kev singing "ciaw". kevin imo has this really cool, bitter voice, but lacks that good technique. and james, while he has that great technique, his weakness is that except for a few tunes doesn't do much for me in terms of emotion. and the person who talked why dt is considered boring or unemotional- i agree with him as well. of course, they are incredible (moot point), but has anyone listened to portnoy and myung(notice correct spelling this time) and felt convinced that it was all sequenced? i sure as hell have. they do things quite well beyond the capabilities of most humans, that you are left thinking that, i think. i think petrucci is perhaps the "feelings" guy in the band. as much as i hate the songs "surrounded" and "ttt", when he does those blues licks live, i always go nuts over that. that is so amazing. also why "scarred" is great. that beginning is beautiful. speaking of feeling, someone who has plenty of that, tori amos. that unplugged had some of her best and worst playing ever. any of you tori freaks catch the wrong bass note in "blood roses"? she was great on that except for that one note that was glaring. plotkin, if you go to see mmw, i want a concert report from you. that shall be all. *****************************************************************david kobayashi email_address_removed "energy, intensity, eclecticism" - robert fripp "the present-day composer refuses to die." -e. varese ***************************************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Jun 1996 15:59:08 -0700 From: Jennifer To: Subject: A blast from the past!
