Dont worry, I won't post frequently about this. I know this one takes up a lot of Jam space, but it's just this once, and it's for Jason.... I've been seeing growing interest in Jason Becker in here, so I thought I would share: Firts of all you can send Jason an email by using the "Jason Becker" link on my home page: http://users1.ee.net/buster Secondly, I have been corresponding with Pat Mapps (Jason's manager) over the past couple of months because I have volunteered to do some web site work for Jason and Pat. Whether or not I'll be creating anything for them soon remains to be soon, but here is what I know: Pat writes the replies now for Jason, but Jason reads all of his mail. Jason is too affected by ALS to write his own email, but he gets great joy from the reading supportive email that we send. If you email him, mention some things about the Ytsejam people that are in support of him. I'm not trying to tell you what to say really, but you might want to stick to some positive "uplifting" things :) Pat tells me they are busy trying to market Jasons new CD PERSPECTIVE. You can order perspective by using the Jason Becker link on my home page. I also have some recent .gif photo's of Jason that I do not have permission to give out, but I can describe. First off, as you might expect, he looks much different. He's gotten very skinny, and grew a beard!! In all the pictures, he is in his wheelchair with his guitar on his lap. For some reason he is wearing gloves in all pic's, but Im not sure if it's to protect from the wheels on the chair, or to possibly hide something he may be embarrassed about. All in all, his mind is completely there, but his physical self has deteriorated a bit. For those of you who don't know, Jason is/was an amazing guitar player, whom I would rank among the likes of JP and my other favorites. He has worked with Marty Friedman (Megadeth, Cacophony, etc..) and David Lee Roth. During the "Little Aint Enough" tour with Dave, Jason was striken down by ALS (Lou Gherigs Disease), a muscle deteriorating disease. He was in his prime then, but he has managed to not give up and he still writes incredible music, he just cant physically play it. His new CD was done with the help of other famous musicians (like Steve Vai and Steve Perry) whom Jason is very close to. I won't take up any more space...check him out! http://users1.ee.net/buster Peace, buster (Dave Hatlee) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Jun 1996 16:30:15 -0700 From: Adam Barnhart To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: YTSEJAM digest 1646 Message-ID: >I haven't seen Dream Theater on Beavis & Butthead, but they didn't like a >Rush video that was on (I think it was Stick it Out), so they probably >wouldn't give DT a favorable "review." Yeah, I saw that, too. I mean, Rush is my favorite band, but I thought it was funny...it's the typical thing you see with real thrash-heads and Rush. As though the band maybe COULD be okay, but they're kinda wimpy or something. Not like Winger, but just that being so erudite weakens the bands position (along with the synthesizers). B&B are plugged in, though -- you'll notice how hip they are to urban music....they're about "cool." Rush isn't. And it's funny, in my opinion. >From: Ben Laussade > Ah....they're *kinda* different. I kinda like GD..I mean, sometimes >I need a break from complex music. Once in a blue moon I like to sit down >and listen to something that requires no brain power, thought, or amazing >range to sing along too. :-) Anybody see GD perform at Woodstock? (the >second one, duh). Sure. I'll get a lot of crap for this, but I think they're a pretty good band. They've got a good balance of aggression and melody. They're certainly not virtuosos, but they get around enough to write a good song. "When I Come Around," I'd say, is a standout, but I like several of their others, and own "Dookie." They're certainly fun, and I like the energy and the melodic function. Don't like them as much as Dream Theater, but enough to buy a them out of the used bin. >From: Pat Daugherty > >Since some of us like Van Halen: > >The radio 98 Rock (Baltimore) just announced that Van Halen's management >has just said that Sammy is out and that DLR will do a song with Van Halen >for their upcoming greatest hits. > >Just 1 song nothing about if it is premanent or not. > >I liked both eras of Van Halen... and... >From: email_address_removed (Mike Estok) >To: email_address_removed >Subject: Van Halen >Message-ID: > > I just heard the "official" news about Van Halen, so I will pass it on. > > David Lee Roth was getting together with the band to record ONE >track for a box set or greatest hits compilation. I don't think much of Dave. Van Halen, of course, has been a tremendous all the way down the line, from the first record. But I don't like Dave in a band of guys who can play -- he's too much ego and not enough talent. He BELONGS in that whole casino/showtune scene. Listening to them do "Big Bad Bill" is fun, but I prefer listening to "Summer Nights" or "Mine All Mine." "Fair Warning" is a hell of a record, though.... Steve Hogarth? That's not fair. I've got all the in print US Marillion discs (along with a couple of imports -- anyone got "Brief Encounters"....been looking for years...), and I'd say "Holidays In Eden" is as good as any Marillion record, save "Clutching at Straws." "Season's End" isn't too bad, either. I don't like the last two as much, but Fish's schtick was that he was, like Dave, a persona. Hogarth, from a musical perspective, is a natural to replace him. He's not as wordy or narrative, but he's a great singer and a lyricist with an edge -- and not a bad stage performer himself. Adam D. I reallly don't care for Hagar....Lately, alot of their songs have been lovey dovey and alot of them also have been sounding too much alike.... As far as Dave goes, yes I remember him having an ego, but at the same time, being away from the spotlight for a few years and basically being a nobody might have knocked him down a notch. Plus, I don't think that Eddie would have even wanted to work with him again if he was the same.... Roth may have finally realized how successful VH was, even without him.... I predict a different Roth... Take Care.....Dusty |__________________________________________________________| |"Likely or not, it's a dream that we keep and at odds with| | our senses we'll climb. The ALS or (Lou Gherig's)disease is a horrible one and unfortunately it doesn't get much attention these days. I had the unfortunate experience of confronting it up front. My mother had the disease for 6 years before she passed away in January. Unfortunately, Jason not only has lost the ability to finger his instrument, but he will become too weak to survive. I don't want to seem like a downer on everybody or anything, I just think people need to realize what's going on here. Jason is in a battle with life here, and playing guitar has to become second to that battle. I agree wholeheartedly that we should find a way to support him, and I wish more people would. It's good that so many of you care. I just needed to get that off my chest and let people know, thanks ;) Onto happier issues... >D-Man wrote: >> What I said is that Green Day looks like they're having more fun >> on stage. > >LiT got a poor review in RAW magazine, when it was released. To a certain extent, I agree. > I think the problem here is that it's much easier to do stupid stage moves and jump around and jerk off on stage while playing Green Day's stuff than DT's. If you notice DT is usually looking at their instruments, and many of their fans are too since they're musicians, so it can get boring (with the exception of James's trademark "caressing" of the audience and his hair flipping :)). However this does not cover up the fact that Green Day sucks. ;) Also I picked up Savatage's Dead Winter Dead the other day. I was dissapointed at first, but the instrumentals caught my attention and now the vocal songs are sounding a little better too. We'll see how it turns out, so far so good. First, instead of just punning album titles, how about parodying entire DT lyrics, a la "Weird Al" Yankovic? Also, we could do "Deep Dream Theater Thoughts" (inspired by "Deep Thoughts with Jack Handey" from SNL). Now, here is a band that I have admired for many years, their music has been an inspiration and a learning tool in my advance as a musician/songwriter. I have looked up to these guys as idols, but this threat of a lawsuit is nothing more than a tantrum. In many of the cover bands that I have been in, we have played a shitload of our favorite Rush tunes, so what's next? are they going to file a lawsuit against us? Now, as I understand it, Anyone can release a tribute album, without the consent of the band, as long as certain requirements are met. My contact at Magna Carta tells me that the criteria has been met. I do believe that the tribute will be released on time. Does anyone have an email or snail-mail address for Rush? I want to voice my opinion to them directly. This really irks me. -- _________________ _ ____________________ (^) (^) <-o->email_address_removed is John R. I had the luck to get the advance tape yesterday and I must say that it is very impressive! Perhaps most of the covers are too close to the original versions but it is certainly due to the fact that Terry Brown mixed most of the songs. Just a small comment on each of them: "Working man" is great, with Baz on vocals and Jake E Lee on guitars. One of the best covers, sounds very powerful, in the Skid Row vein. "By-Tor" is unfortunately a short version of the song (about 3 minutes), still with Jake E Lee on guitars. James La Brie's vocals are great, close to Geddy ones. But too short!! Michael Romeo (Symphony X) gives a fantastic guitar playing to "The analog kid", with very rock vocals by Jack Russel. "The trees" is covered by Shadow Gallery. Very close to the original version, but the vocals don't fit exactly. One of the weakest covers. Steve Morse transcends "La villa strangiato". Nothing more to say. Great great version of "Mission" with Eric Martin on vocals. His interpretation of the song is very different and it gives a fresh touch. Definitely one of the best. "Anthem" is the faithfulest cover. Incredible how Mark Slaughter can sounds like Geddy. "Jacobs' ladder" is great. John Petrucci plays with a lot of feeling and Baz gives a good singing. Fates Warning's version of "Closer to the heart" is close to Rush version. IMHO "Natural science" is the strongest song of this tribute. Devin Townsend is simply amazing on it, and the result is quite unexpected. "YYZ" is also very well done, with James Murphy on guitars (as on "Natural science"). He changed a little some guitar parts. This version is very powerful and heavier than the original one. "Red barchetta" is definitely the second highlight performance of this tribute. Steve Morse on guitar, James La Brie on vocals and the rythm section of Cynic. And it is as good as we can expect it. James vocals are more personnal and it gives a second breath to this fantastic song. Steve Morse is definitely a God! And it is difficult to find a better rythm section, strong and subtle at the same time. "Freewill" is the weakest song. What a pity! But the guys from Aura are not in, even if their album is good (to be release on Magna Carta in september). The rythm section for most of the tracks are Mike Portnoy / Billy Sheehan or Dean Castronovo / Sturat Hamm. No comments necessary. "Working man" is a wonderful tribute album and you'll love it. And Rush is a great band! That's all for now. Stephane ------------------------------ End of YTSEJAM Digest 1647 **************************
