It's nice to know that there are people on the jam who are willing to defend a fellow members musical tastes even if they do not share in those taste, and are able to do so in a calm and rational manner without resorting to childish name calling and mindless vulgarity. That is a mark of true maturity and I thank the jammers for that and for all the jammers who privately emailed me with my numerous questions about bands and CD's and bass techniques. I sent a private email to the person who flammed me explaining calmly and rationally that my opinion was my own and it helped no one to know what he did not like/understand personally. Korn and Sepultura have both sold more records than he has, so when he has made his contribution to music, I may then place more weight on his musical opinion. Again, I thank all the mature jammers out there. MUCHAS GRACIAS!!!!! :-))))))))))))))))))) email_address_removed Seth Hatlelid "This is true love. Do you think this happens everyday? I must say that if you are a bass player, then you should pick this CD up, it was quite impressive. In case you don't know who this guy is, he is the bass player for Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, and he is absolutely amazing. I guarantee that you've never heard some of the things this guy does. This is how I remember it being explained on the Rush newsgroup. Alex is just sort of babbling on with a "you've been a great crowd..." kind of thing. Since that wasn't particularly relevant to the video audience, they decided to have a little fun and put a warning on it. That seems like a good explaination since the way the warning is worded itself is pretty funny (if I remember correctly). If you notice, on > the LiT vid, when they show 'em laying tracks for I&W, they're playing along > w/ the actual song, and a TOC TOC TOC TOC... The actual sound of the click is something like a snare or a cowbell or a bss drum or something. Something that the drummer can hear to keep a beat to. The way I understand it, the click is usually recorded onto the tape, and the band members can listen to it as they record. So, like, when you saw Kevin recording his parts, he was listening to the tape that included drums, bass, guitar, and click. At final mixdown, you just set the volume level of the track where the click is (hence the term "click track") at zero. I think. I might be wrong, but that's my understanding of it. BTW, while I'm writing, just thought I'd offer my $0.02 on something. A lot of us (myself included) have been getting kinda nasty at people here. First, John, I apologize. The perception of what is and what is >not art is as individualistic as you can get. It's a matter of definition. I have a different view of the meaning of the word "ART". Art is creativity, but creativity is not necessarily art. >>An artist, to produce a work of art, must have a great knowledge of art >>history, and must be able to understand and reproduce the art of the past. > >Sure most artists start out with >an appreciation for their chosen art, but the strive for creativity will push >them to create from within themselves and not merely become proficient at >copying the works of others. I agree. Art is originality. >Knowledge of what other artists do and why they do >it can be very helpful, but it is definately not a requirement. I disagree. Real artists must have great knowledge, or they'll build castles in the air. Art is evolution, an artist must have a great background. Otherwise, I don't see why I'm studying Italian and English literature at school or art history, for example... >I think that what you're trying to explain here is something that happens >naturally... anybody who wants to be musician will be influenced by somebody >else, and add to what that person was doing... and I mean, do you think >Mozart started learning stuff from the middle ages? I'd like to think that my music >will eventually actually move somebody emotionally, just like DT moves me... I play the keyboards in a rock band and write music (rock music). I like to think that my music conveys feelings and emotions, I like to be original in music, but I don't consider to be an artist or to write music that is art. >all I know is that I've always considered art to be an attempt of humans to >represent something abstract (like our emotions) in a concrete form... of >course music itself is rather abstract, which makes IMO the better >representative of the arts... I agree with you, but I add one more thing that is the one that makes me be so careful to define something art: the content must be original, but the form is also very important. I can be the most sensitive and emotional person in the world, but if I don't know how to write a poem, I won't write anything that can be considered artistic. It's the same for music. You can say that form is against spontaneity, that rules are made to be broken. In some cases, yes: but you have to know it before you take the freedom of breaking them. P.S. The fact I don't feel so sure about saying DT's music is art DOES NOT MEAN that I want to say their music is worthless. I have the HIGHEST possible consideration and admiration for their music. The biggest misconception about music is that knowing theory will stifle your creativity!!! That is one of my biggest pet-peeves. Having studied formally, continuing to study music (and being aware of these God awful "rules") has done nothing but increase my ability to create. IMHO, it's the other way around. People who claim they don't need to know theory are the ones being arrogant and snotty. Be thankful that we can get away with breaking the rules. Music is one of the few things in where you can get away with that. You gotta know what the rules are before you break them, cuz if you don't know the rules, you're gonna be doing something that you think is so cool cuz you thought you came up with it by yourself, but all along you were just playing a run-of-the-mill AbMin7b5 chord! > 5. First of all there is no reason the whole band can't be in the same room while recording. Their amps just have to be in separate rooms to prevent the sound from bleeding. The MIDI room is great for this. It is also better for the band to be in the same room so the communication is better. James is probably doing reference vocals so the band doesn't get lost. Overdubs and final vocals have to be done separatly, or at least usually are. The point is that there are many ways to approach recording. Does anyone know for a fact how DT recorded Awake? Harris did an awesome bass solo on an acoustic bass which was amazing. Maiden was taping the show, so it may pop up later. Japenese jammers should definitly check them out, that is where they are going next. Blaze said that the show was their last U.S. date so I don't know if they are going to make up the eight that they missed. It was some HEAVY ASS METAL!!!!!!! As for Vaudxvihl (or however you spell it), be careful. I have heard reviews on the jam of how it sounds similar to DT or Queensryche. The thing is they don't. I spent twenty plus dollars because the ad for them said they sounded like Rush and DT. They have gotten good reviews but the music is dark and avant garde. There are a couple good songs but for the most part, it wasn't what I expected. Jammers should beware of buying albums, lots of times companies do that in order to sell records.
