I wasn't implying jealousy or envy. Merely stating a fact. Obviously, some seem to use the fact that they R preI&W fans asa validator to up themselves on the DT totem pole.Im not sure if many people care when they became DT fans. I personally think that it is more important, is that we are all DT fans in one respect. I see too many people on this jam who prefer to turn their knowledge of DT into one huge online pissing contest. When it comes to pissing into the urinal of little known DT fans, I can hold my own...but I dont announce that....(I DONT NEED A CONCHE) :) MojoMan, the one the only steel-faced Cobra Comander, hath spoken. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Apr 1996 10:58:48 -0600 (CST) From: Jeffrey Cline To: email_address_removed Subject: Bruce D. Rules Message-ID: Hey fellow jammers I just picked up the new Bruce Dickinson album SKUNKWORKS. It's so great I felt I had to comment on it. On this album Bruce has taken on a different sound. Both the music and his vocals are somewhat diverse from projects he's done in the past. The new band that is with Bruce is great. He has surrounded himself with some great young talent. The band gave a great preformance and the bass and drum work on this album really stands out as being spectacular. Bruce's voice seems to have more of an edge on this album. Overall the sound is fresh and new and contains both heavy sounds with a melodic touch. I recommend this to any Bruce Dickinson fan and for that matter and fan of progressive rock. Check it out. I just wanted to post my brief opinions about the musician thread. First of all, I think we should distinguish between a classical musician and a rock (or jazz, or what you want) musician. A modern musician must know how to play his instrument, how to create music, how to jam. This is what he's asked to do, what he likes to do. It doesn't matter if he can read music (that actually isn't that difficult, as someone said), if he knows music theory and history, if he plays various instruments and different styles. Of course it helps, but I would define a good drummer a modern musician even if he can't play anything else and if he can't read music. On the other hand, a classical musician has other qualities. He must know how to read music, he must know the theory, he must be technically excellent. And, above all, he must be able to PLAY. And to PLAY an instrument, in classical music, means that you can really express yourself when you play, and communicate it to the audience, recreate what the composer had to say. This is really difficult, and it expresses the difference between modern music and classical music. This is because music is a very special ART, that is created once, and then relives only in the interpretation of a great musician. This makes music so different from sculpture, literature, architecture, and so on. But this is only true for music which is art: and, in my opinion, only classical music is art: so, a classical musician and mainly a classical composer are artists: the others are not. (So, DT's music is not a form of art... do you agree?) Saying this, I'm not saying that modern music has no value: it is a different thing. Everyone choses his way. I like them both. Well, my brief opinions weren't all that brief... :) Fabio ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Apr 1996 08:55:29 -0600 From: email_address_removed (jskewes) To: email_address_removed Subject: Superior Orders Message-ID: I will be sending off to Germany to get more copies of Superior's album 'behind' on April 15th. Yeah the Nuno way... I prefer doing that because I can control the string noise better when I use the index finger... but sometimes it's more convenient to use the middle... especially when you don't have much time to change back to picking mode... but the chomper is still necessary when try the 8-finger tapping technique ( I'm trying to learn how to do that now) >(ever notice how Petrucci very smoothly shifts his grip whenever he goes >into a speed-picking riff, then switches back for normal play? this >technique has a purpose.) > I hadn't noticed that, but you're right... he does it when he sweeps too... I have a question that maybe someone can help me with. Dream Theater and somewhat similar musicians Queensryche, among other awesome groups, have achieved stellar status in Japan, far surpassing their fame in the states. Or, so it seems to me at least. I was wondering if there was a logical explanation for this or is it just that Japan simply knows great music moreso than America. later. craig ps - I managed to find and pick up a copy of the CD single for "Lie." I had heard "To Live Forever" on the DT LiT videotape, but it sounds awesome in the studio version as well. And the live version of "Another Day"... nothing needs to be said except "great." You are making yourself look foolish, so have a little >self respect. Be seeing you..... Well in case you haven't noticed, When I post 12 times in one jam, you don't see me for a few jams. That's because I live in ARKVILLE, where online use is a long distance phone call, and I use AOHell where you only get to use 5 free hours a month. Therefore, i go on line every other day, and read and compose all of my mail off line. So all of my mail comes in at once, and all of my mail goes out at once. Its not that I'm TRYING to post a lot, its just that when I go on and have 10+ jams in my mailbox, I have a lot of responses to whats being said. I'm not proud that I post all the time. As far as the sig goes, people have criticised me about posting a lot, and "If you can't beat em, join em!" I'm not going to sit around and cry because someone thinks I use up too much bandwidth. and I'm not going to change the way I am because someone thinks I post too much. That's what the jam is for. Expressing your feelings. This may be a Dream Theater list, but its really a family. I mean what's the difference if I have a whole bunch of really short posts or one real long one. I get bored reading extremely long posts (which I realize that I am writing at this moment), and I know I'm not the only one. So give me a break, will ya?
