Although I do think it is excessive, and I am not taking back everything I said, I should have been more understanding. The jam has become more and more cluttered, and I felt that such a great number of posts with such short content were basically taking up space by having a sig. on the end of all of them, when I think the posts could have easily been combined since they were only sent seconds apart from each other. Sure he did do a great with Queensryche on Empire but how did you not hear his stuff with Rush. Sure the two albums he did with them in the eighties were very synth-oriented but Counterparts in 1993 was just a kick ass album. Before that album I never thought Rush would have the ability to write hard rockin' songs again. Peter Collins was the one got them back into this phase. I definately see a great album coming up if Peter Collins produces it. Falsetto actually refers more precisely to the facilitation of the vocal bands. The misconception is natural, however, because most people, male vocalists in particular, find it easier to use these higher notes while in a falsetto mode. Even the term "Head Voice" is misleading, because every quality tone a singer makes finds resonance in the masque of the face. What this means is that the sound, the air as it is passed over the vocal chords, effectively hums in the cavities of the head. This is true even of low notes that seem to originate in the chest. Hearing the difference is simple, when you hear a note that sounds murky, or thick (not terribly musical terms, but more definitive) you can recognize that the vocalist is singing the note from his/her throat, and that they are not singing into the masque. There is a brightness to the quality of the sound as it is produced properly. James does do some singing in falsetto, but he uses it almost exclusively on the softer sections of their songs, and on many of the versions recorded on Make Bahr's Acoustic Dreams. For me, personally, it is precisely because James is not dependent upon a falsetto voice to reach the show stopper notes that I enjoy listening to him sing. I always feel the least bit cheated when a singer is building a nice melodic line which you know will culminate in a powerfully sustained high note to accentuate whatever emotion they are trying to convey, then at the last moment they hitch and you hear a terribly thin version of that note as it is sung falsetto. George Michael does this when covering Queen, and the examples are endless of singers who "cheat." The word itself, falsetto, is telling of a sound that is artificial to the normal speaking voice. How much higher can James sing than we've heard? Not much. But then there's not much room left is there, least ways not for a man. More important though, at least to me, is the quality of the notes we hear. It is for this reason that James continually impresses me. I hear dozens of R&B artists that shout out their idea of singing, and the melodies always sound as if they were sung from the bottom of a lake. Sure, there are good R&B singers, too, and music is personal anyway, but for my money there are damn few Labrie's singing our there. I wouldn't say that you have to read music to play it, but it sure helps. There are some of us who wish to make a living is the field of music, and that may or may not include being in a successful rock band. I hope no one thinks making it in a band is easy. If you do, you're a fool. Sure, maybe a lot of jammers are in bands, but how many of you are doing nothing but playing in a band to support yourselves. I can't think of one person I personally know who does nothing but play in a band. They all teach music or have other various day jobs. They have to if they want to support themselves entirely by music. That's why I chose to study music in school. I don't worry about there being a day when I have to say "This rock band thing isn't going anywhere, I gotta put food on the table, I gotta get a real job." As a trained musician I can make a living at a variety of projects. If rock won't work, then I'll play Jazz, or classical, or teach, or compose, or all of the above. As a well rounded musician I can take almost any job that comes my way. I can play guitar, bass, piano and percussion. That greatly expands the jobs I can take. Being a studio musician can be good money, but if you can't read music they'll kick you out the door. I'm not saying I'm in it for the money, I play because I love it and I love to create. But sometimes creation and starvation go hand in hand. Education and knowledge should never be harmful but helpful. Whenever I found myself at a block in my playing, it was learning something new that got me past it. Now, having knowledge of music theory, ear training, and notation, etc.. makes those blocks non-existent, because knowledge of music allows me to learn more in a shorter period of time. I don't have to agonize so much about trying to figure something out. I never wanted to be "just a guitar player in a rock band," even to be as great as Petrucci I wanted more than just rock. And through school I have that. If you can make it in a rock band, more power to ya. Someone once said that if you make a living doing something you love, you'll never work a day in your life. Even if I'm teaching 'My Favorite Things' to fifth (firth?) graders, it will still be music. Do you _play_ a horn or do you just listen to horn players and incorporate their style and phrasing on your primary instrument? There is a huge difference. I never said to only listen to players of your primary instrument. Transcribing sax solos and playing them on guitar will greatly help your guitar playing and learning that style.
