These albums show that there are enough bands that are capable of making good music like DT does. I really hope that you get the chance to pick up and get into these albums because even intelligent musicians like forementioned bands need money to continue their work. Also try Letter X (are they still active?) from Germany. BTW, has anyone heard of Ricochet? According to the review I read in Aardschok (Dutch magazine) the singer sounds like LaBrie and the music can be put in the same category as DT (not that I think that that is possible). They certainly don't have the most total album sales of all bands in the world. That award goes to somebody like the Beatles or Michael Jackson or something. Thriller probably outsold all of the Rush albums combined. What your teacher probably meant is that Rush has one of the most dedicated fan bases in the world, whenever they release a record they're practically insured that it will at least go gold and probably platinum. Most of their releases have gone platinum, a couple 2x, and I think Moving Pictures went 3x. >To whoever complained about the immaturity on this list, try the White >Zombie list. Rivera" To: Dream Theater Subject: Mr. Big Message-ID: Someone brought up Mr. Big's song-writing ability. Mr. Big has come up with some INCREDIBLE songs during their career, most of which, IMHO, were on albums that came AFTER their first self-titled effort. That album is okay, but the only real standouts for me are "Addicted To That Rush" and their cover of "30 Days In The Hole." Everyone knows that the band has chops, but I think a testament to the band's integrity is their ability to discern when chops do and do not serve the song; Extreme has this ability, as does DT. "Lean In To It" is, IMHO, the best Mr. Big album to date and contained the mega-hit "To Be With You." This album achieved the perfect balance between chops and song-writing. "Bump Ahead," which conatined the band's version of "Wild World," while great, seemed to leave me with a less satisfied feeling. "Colorado Bulldog" is a great song from both a song-writing and a technical perspective, contrasting a blistering opening run (if you haven't heard it, you're missing out) with a jazzy bass line. As a side note, I think DT and Mr. Big would make a great tour together and I'm surprised no one has mentioned this before. As far as Mr. Big's new album is concerned, I have mixed feelings. Keep in mind that I'm drawn to the more "commercial" side of the band (I actually like "To Be With You"). That being said, album opener "Trapped In Toyland" kicks major ass, as does "Take Cover." But the highlight of the album for me is their newest single "Going Where The Wind Blows," a great acoustic song that may invoke visions of "To Be With You." However, the former is the superior song. Much more introspective. There are some other cool moments: "The Chain" is a haunting song, and "Where Do I Fit In?" has a groovy feel to it. But alot of this album is in the vein of "Tempramental" off "Lean Into It." I don't mind this type of song, but it just doesn't blow me away. Personally, there have always been songs off each album that didn't do much for me. Mr. Big has a mind-blowing album in them, just haven't gotten it down on tape yet. I just hope they aren't dropped before they get a chance to record it. Richie P.S. I agree with the guy that mentioned the new Motley Crue album. It will shatter your image of what Motley Crue was. John Corabi has an incredible voice and it's definitely worth checking out. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Mar 1996 09:27:12 -0500 From: Paul Mc Clelland To: email_address_removed Message-ID: Hey ytsedudes and dudettes! There was also the time just after the Ronnie Scott's gig that DT did a session and interview on the Bruce Dickinson rock show which was excellent. They played 6:00, CiaW, and Lifting Shadows. This has been discussed before, but it's funny how the drummers seem to like the ACOS snare whereas the guitarists like the I&W snare. The Awake snare is somewhere in between, maybe appealing to bassists. ;-) However I think the reason that guitarists don't like the ACOS snare is cause it's so high and poppy that it cuts through their high squeely diddly-piss solo, thus taking the spotlight off them, and doing their ego absolutely no good!!! hehe - flame away! To the guy with the CD recommendations, including GWAR: Right on! You made me drool. :) And yes, Gwar is prog. Just check out King Queen off of Scumdogs of the Universe for a proto-prog song. Is their newer stuff good? I have the first three, but found America Must be Destroyed leaning a little in the commercial direction, though that may have been for a point. (I think Pussy Planet is a parody of bands like REM and not an imitation, and The Road Behind is a parody ballad) Still, they are leaning more on parodying others and less on being themselves on that album. I also bought the Phallus in Wonderland video and watched it, erm, once. Weird stuff. Let me also add that their first album, HELL-O (Yes, like JELL-O) is very rough. Why am I going on about them? I just love saying their song titles in rational discussion. It has such a humorous quality to it. Anagrams by Master Laussade: > Reverse blitz?! Oil!!! (Uh...) Obviously a Houston Oiler fan (football, if memory serves.) Which reminds me. I had to write a scene for my playwriting class (Actually I had to write menay scenes) that was a quid pro quo -- you know two people talking about different things but each one thinks they are talking about the same thing -- classic double misunderstanging, and mine came out sounding like Shakespeare (bad Shakespeare, mind you) and, in coming up with Shakespearean names, turned to the Jam! So, there's Lord Laussade, his crafty servant Bafu, who is in love with Laussade's daughter, Bahrina, so Laussade disguises himself as Sengir, the stable hand, to confront him, and that's thew scene I wrote!
