Call it what you want, but I'm positive the builders of the prototype for this instrument would not approve of me using a plectrum to play it. They probably also wouldn't like this 80-watt amplifier I use to make it louder when I play. Next time you see Mike Portnoy, tell him he's playing with the wrong ends of his drumsticks and see how much respect he grants you for your insight. Anyone who assigns rules to an art form needs to re-read the Art Manual. Ha ha, just kidding, there is no Art Manual. Fooled you, didn't I? I see no Art Manual here. Bafu Vai p.s. That should be "their" ;) ow ow! But seriously, there's a difference between stating an opinion and being rude. It's perfectly socially and gramatically acceptable to say "I don't like them" rather than saying "they are wankers" or "they suck" (which imply, by "they" being the subject of the sentence, that the band is somehow responsible for you not liking them and the lack of an "I" in there implies that you have no responsibility in the matter) (oh, the "you" is the generic you, not Cat specifically). An "I think they are wankers" is not really better. Why not say what you mean? "I don't like their music." or "I hate their music" or "I run screaming from the room whenever one of their somgs comes on" or "I want to vomit whenever I hear them" -- you see? You can express extreme displeasure and yet not insult people who like the music at the same time! What a concept, eh? Oh, and Cat? You sent you message twice. :) Hey, stop hitting me again! What a bitch. Ow! Okay, I'll go crawl back under my rock again. :) p.s. welcome back, Bafu. Then this happened and for the first time in a while I busted up laughing. You're little bit there reminded me of this kid named Fritz that I had a crush on in 8th grade. We used to all ride the bus together and he would start making fun of my last name - I finally got so pissed off with him that I began dating his brother and guess what - the both of us got picked on by him. Anyways, thanks for brightening my day Bafu. I've always been proud of the fact that most prog fans are very open-minded, but it seems to me that many of the people posting here act as though they're part of an elitist group, and that just goes against everything prog stands for. Is "Rust In Peace" prog. Who cares?!? It's an awesome album, the musicianship is awesome, so leave it at that! Does one band have more right to be discussed here than another? Definitely not. The nice thing about DT is that they unite and blend different aspects of ALL KINDS of music. One minute, it sounds like you're listening to Rush, the next it sounds like Metallica, then Al DiMeola, then Yes, etc. Let's embrace the diversity of fans that DT brings together, and stop wasting time figuring out who is prog and who is not. Here's a hint for all you prog fans out there:If you like it, listen to it. If you don't like it, don't listen to it, and don't knock it. Everyone's got their own opinion, and no one's counts more than another's. Let's have a little more class in the future. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 Mar 1996 08:48:28 -0500 (EST) From: Brian Wherry To: DT List Subject: Paul Gilbert CD ROM? Message-ID: So Paul Gilbert has a CD ROM coming out?? Pleasant. BTW- has anyone checked out the new Mr. Big CD?? I used to be a fan of that band -- quality musicianship all around. But then Bump Ahead came out..... And now I actually have to get a review of the new disc before buying it. Those Japanese magazines that are sporting the Mr. Big boys on the cover aren't much help -- my Japanese is just a little rusty. Rusty like one of those yellow Tonka dumptrucks that was left out in the rain for years, and was never even really played with in the first place. I have been on lists where they set up the list server so that only people on the list can post to it. Is there anyway to do this for ytsejam? I know some may not like this idea but it will stop spammers from fake addresses from posting crap to the jam. I got the best of the Dixie Dregs the other day from one of the 3 cd clubs I am in. All I have to say is that it is instrumental! No one ever mentioned that the band only played instrumentals. I'm not complaining since it is some great music. I know that Europe is has a great selection of prog. bands, but was wondering why this is the case. Do they get more radio play, or what? Any comments from out European 'jammers? The same is true for DT in the Far East. Could I go to Japan, flip on the radio or TV and catch DT, or other prog. bands? Any comments or contributions on the subject? Speaking of European prog. I got Superior "Behind" last week (Thanks Jason!) , and its dominated my CD player at work ever since. This is a great album. Its seems to punch all the right buttons for me, a really great vocalist, good lyrics, nice acoustic piano and guitar touches, and of course grinding guitar work backed by thundering bass and percussion (even a nice bit with tympani). Bernd, if you read this, GREAT JOB. Give us more!!! I'd highly recommend this to any and all DT fans. Can anyone give me any info on the bands Airborne and Mayfair? I saw them listed at the Avalance Records Web sight along with Threshold, Ivanhoe, and Black Jester, and wondered what they were like. My favorite list is the Ytse Jam. The Ytse Jam (email_address_removed) is a list devoted to discussion of the progressive-rock band Dream Theater, and other topics related to progressive rock. The Ytse Jam is much more than a list, however; it's almost like a family. Dream Theater held four performances in the New York City area during the week between Christmas and New Year's. List subscribers came from as far away as Florida and Washington state to attend. However, besides just catching the performances, about 70 of us "Ytse Jammers" met in a hotel conference room before one of the shows. This "Ytse Convention" was unlike any other meeting I had been to. We had known each other only by name and .signature file, yet it seemed to the outside observer as if we had been close friends since high school. New York-area Jammers opened their homes to travellers; Florida subscribers picked up Maryland-area Jammers on the drive up. The YtseCon of December 1995 was an experience I'll never forget. Now, we have a dedicated server for IRC chat, so we can further continue discussions that start on the mailing list. We have printed many different t-shirts. We buy tapes and CDs of each other's bands. And, of course, we happily spend our free time discussing one of our favorite bands, Dream Theater. The Ytse Jam is a mailing list unlike any other I've subscribed to. Well, to answer that question the first four CD's in my rack are Savatage (complex), Paula Abdul (couldn't be any less complex), Enya (see Paula), and the Ramones (anybody could cover these songs after two days of guitar lessons). I like music for the music, but I find that as I began to study music (I leave high school for half a day to study music and psychology at a local university). That I began to like music that was both pretty and complex (ie progressive rock, classical, flaminco). But I also enjoy simple music (Bad Religion, Korn, Sepultura, Tori Amos, The Misfits, Smashing pumpkins, Paula Abdul, Maddonna, Ween, MU330, Bob Marley etc.) My coment about Megadeth being more complex than other bands was a statement about their ability to write good music more than their ability to shred. For their are a lot of players who can play VERY complex music who couldn't write a song to save their lives (Yngiew Malmsteen, Michael Manring etc.) Yet Megadeth's songs are good enough to get radio play DESPITE being complex. I refuse to trash any band until I become wealthy enough off my own music to outstrip their successes of even BEING SIGNED!!!! I respect Garth Brooks as an extremely talented songwriter even though I don't like a lot of his music. Even Green Day has done better than most of us garage kings. Think about that. I have witnessed quite enough to turn a faithful reader of your magazine and guitar player's stomach 30 times over. I have seen guitar players of worthy talent get squashed by your rag for about 5 years now. What confuses me, is that I still buy your magazine. Something finally happened recently that convinced me to stop reading Guitar For The Practicing Musician or whatever you call it nowadays. I began vommiting while reading Guitar about 4-5 months ago. I read a back issue that featured a review of Dream Theater's "A Change Of Season's." You refered to John Petrucci's playing as a "trifle self indulgent," Yet Guitar recently runs an article on Yngwie. What disgusts me is that John Petrucci's playing is, regardless of what you may think, a very significant change in rock guitar in the 90's. Today, in an age when technical ability and intensive playing is re-kindled by John Petrucci and Dream Theater, you choose to write a review reminiscent of an ignorant child. It got worse. Reading you issue concerning the "Top 50 in Guitar" was truely an exercise in omni-idiocracy. I WILL grant that you had a great deal of important things to say. But, you included crap in the top 50. I'm not even going to bother telling you what I think is crap. Most of you at Guitar magazine play guitar. You know what is crap. Stop catering to the puke-inducing flavor of the month. Guitarist don't care about trends. The final straw became evident in your most recent issue for april. I see Ace Frehley on the cover and for the first time in a long time, I smiled. That is, I smiled until I read one of your features. "The Best Guitarists You've Never Heard Of" was by far the worst piece of garbage to be printed from you schmucks at Chery Lane. Why on earth would you comment on a bunch of guitarists that we've never heard of when you are still ignoring several guitarists that we HAVE heard of. Brad Gillis released 2 albums in the past 3 years, and did you bother mentioning anything about it? Mr. Big, Billy Sheehan's band has just released, "Hey Man" and I didn't see anything about it. Billy Sheehan was one of your greatest award holders, and you are ignoring him! Guitar Magazine, stop catering to the flavor of the month. There are talented guitarists that seem to have disapeared because of jerks like you. I'm a guitar player, not a teeny groupie. If I wanted to read sensationalist shit, I would have purchased Teen Beat or Circus. Bring back John Stix. He knew what to do with you people.
