They are called Atlantis. They are a great Prog band. Sound a little like a cross between DT and Megadeth. They are playing a few gigs in the NY NJ area soon and thought I would let you know so that you can check them out. Here are two dates: March 9: Escapades--Jersey City AA March 15: Six Shooters--Atlantic City 21+ I highly recomend checking these guys out. Just you give you an idea on thier influences thier Bassist told of a cover medley they were working on that consisted of La Villa Strangiato (Not sure if I spelled it right but you get the point) by Rush, Heart of the Sunrise by yes, Perfect Strangers by Deep Purple and.........drumroll please.....Take the Time. Anyway if you will be near either of these clubs on these dates check these guys out. I will be at the one on the 9th....If you go look for the dude in the Home for the Holidays tour shirt and Kappa Delta Rho baseball cap...that's me. Late, Ryan Inverso KDR Pi Beta #66 ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Feb 1996 17:57:23 -0600 (CST) From: Pat Griffin To: Ytsejelly Subject: Dream Theatre... Message-ID: I went home this past weekend to see a play at my high school, and while I was there, I decided that I was going to do my damnest to get the Lie single while I was there. I check several store before finding it, and one of my stops was at Best Buy... While I was there, I found a whole section of thier stuff (unfortunatly, only the "main" albums), and I took upon myself to dispose of the three section dividers bearing the name "Dream Theatre." You too can join the fight against Dream Theatre! Go to all your local record stores and look for the CDs. If you find a divider labeled "Dream Theater," THROW IT OUT! Scratch off the last two letters and spell it RIGHT! Tell the store manager to LOOK AT THE DAMN *ALBUM*COVER* when he puts the bands name on the dividers! Do whatever it takes to make our favorite band "Dream Theater" again! =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= To those of you preparing to flame me: Don't take this post too seriously. I'm not really suggesting that we form a militia just because store owners can't seem to tranfer "Dream TheatRE" from the album cover. This is meant to be taken lighly. By all means, advise them to change it, but if you take severe action, there may be severe repercussions. BTW, I did leave behind the one (of four) dividers that actually said "Dream Theater." Later all. h t t p : / / w w w . m i s s o u r i . e d u / ~ c 6 7 5 3 1 1 / | Pat Griffin Reality2 Design | | email_address_removed email_address_removed | h t t p : / / w w w . m i s s o u r i . e d u / ~ c 6 7 5 3 1 1 / ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Feb 1996 16:31:11 -0800 From: Jason Giles To: email_address_removed Subject: SHIRTS UPDATE and LAST CALL!! I can't remember his name, but he said to say hi and thanks for making ACoS possible. Tip for the ytse-drinkers: they were selling vodka and Red Bull 50/50 under the name 'red pig'. Sounds like it's worth trying out. By the way, am I the only person on the jam who *doesn't* like Iron Maiden? Am I normal? Perhaps not, but then again I don't really care for Rush and Tori Amos either. By the way (II): would the "over 21 only" crap in the States mean that the lads from Silverchair wouldn't be able to go to their own gigs? Just wondering. A LOT of international ones that were lower numbers finally are arriving, I'm being told. 'bout time... I'm getting them done faster these days than usual, because of additional help. CRITICAL MASS news... the Rush double-CD. At least, the plan is still to make it a 2-CD at this time. I got the pre-masters from Scott Hansen, and all I can say is: OH MY GOD! The sound is _perfect_. It's at least as clear, if not clearer, than A Show of Hands. You all won't _believe_ how awesome this is. I know I've been known to exaggerate before, but this is no stretch. Those of you who are locals who want to take a listen, feel free to give me a call and we'll do lunch. 602-777-0501. I'm doing all the necessary rigamarole now that one must do in the early production stages of a CD. I wanted to address James Colberg's SUBCONSCIOUS CD dubbing project briefly. As you saw, I gave it my endorsement. I am sure that he will make available a quality end product. There's no way to duplicate what Subconscious _was_, so the value of this gem-of-all-DT-collectables should not be affected. Also, his price was the same as mine, and yet he is using far more expensive recording media and doing it in REAL-TIME as well, contributing to the wear of the recording unit. I daresay if I'd done it that way I might never have had the money to advance-fund Cygnus. What I'm getting at is that I think the price is fair and, coming from someone who would know, he's making damn near zero profit on it, especially considering time spent as labor. So it's cool. :) I literally can never make any more Sub discs; the glass master was recycled/destroyed so I could get my deposit back, as were the plates from the ink films for the printing of the liner and CD. If you got the original Subconscious: awesome! You deserve it for risking your money and putting your faith in me when I was as-yet-unproven as a CD source. Thanks very much. If you missed out on Subconscious, and many did simply because they arrived on the net later, then Jim Colberg's project is in my opinion the best solution for you. It sure beats cassettes! Now on to the covers project. I think, in my humble opinion as an experienced recorder-of-sounds (smile) that the best way to do this with the minimum of sound problems, the highest sound quaity, the least expense, and the best end product over all, would be as follows. Jammers who play instruments should get together with other Jammers who play instruments, who are as local to them as possible. They should try to either buy a cheap mixing board (a la Radio Shack, $60 or so) if they don't already have one, or some decent mics, and run the output to a DAT. Or failing that, to a fine cassette deck... failing that, to hi-fi VHS. They should then rehearse the DT song(s) they wish to submit, and when they think they've got them down pat, hit record and play the songs 5 or 6 times. In 5 or 6 live takes, the likelihood of a good take increases dramatically. Furthermore, good live takes doen in realtime are 100% better for a project like this than studio track-by-track layering would be. That's my opinion of things. I encourage people to put their own twists on the songs... go acoustic or electric where a song goes the other way. Introduce other insruments. Have the keyboardist play the guitar part, the guitar play a basic groove, and the bassist play the solo. It'll make it more worthwhile overall. We just want it to sound nice unlike the Tori Covered tape that was attempted some time ago. I'm willing to get together with any Jammers in the Arizonaland area to do this. I own a soundboard, PA system, and can play a bass or guitar part, preferably bass. I can also sing, but you don't want me to; trust me. I'll be in tune but my voice isn't a singing type. I als have a DAT we can do the recording with. My own band Scoobacca will probably do Pull Me Under, Take The Time, and MAYBE Lie (but probably not), but you're all welcome to double that... they did on Tori Covered, and it was a good thing. Finally one thing to address. We Jammers have an opportunity the likes of which we have never had before, and may never have again. If we want Rush to take Dream Theater on the road with them, we have to help. Write to Rush's Management. (address below... use it with discretion, dammit! -grin) Tell them you noticed Rush and DT are due to have albums out at the same time this year. Tell them you love both bands. Tell them you think it'd be a great ticket to see Rush with DT. Tell them all your friends and you will buy tickets in a heartbeat for such a show. They want to know that an act is young, undiscovered, and potentially profitable in order to accept them on the tour. Please hand-sign what you write, and try to use postcards when you can... they HATE having to open 10,000 envelopes, and postcards look nicer anyhow. :) Write to: RUSH - attn: Ms. Kim Garner, SRO Management 189 Carlton Street Toronto, Ontario, CANADA M5A2K7 If I hear of anyone abusing that address, I will kill you myself. :) To randomize things a bit... everyone whose last name begins with a letter after Q, put it to attn: Mr. Ray Danniels instead of Kim. It's best to get them talking amongst themselves. Don't say you heard abou "this campaign" on the internet... say you and some friends on the net were discussing how much you'd like to see DT open for Rush. Two final things before I sign off for tonight. Derek is not gay. If he is, he sure was hitting on a lot of cute women at the backstage parties after those Christmas shows, probably to throw off suspicion. Let's end that subject here and now, ok? Dream Theater have never even been offered a chance at Letterman, let alone being cancelled or calling off a Letterman appearance. They'd all love to do it. If we're going to mail Dave, though, we'd better do it a little closer to new-album-time so he can appropriately book them. Take care everyone! The Force Will Be With You... Always! -Mike Bahr, email_address_removed/email_address_removed ------------------------------ End of YTSEJAM Digest 1296 **************************
