I wanted to take a few minutes and write something serious (unusual for me, I know). I know that we all have been enjoying the freedom of the revised 'jam, but I am really kind of bothered about a couple issues. I don't really feel that it's important to discuss whether or not the band members have ever been under the influence of drugs, etc. and I don't feel that it's important to have a big discussion on Derek's sexual preferences/orientation. I feel that we are getting farther and farther away from the music. I'll be honest with you, I've had similar questions that I've asked people - just out of curiousity or wanting to know a little bit more about them as a band, but the idea of spilling it all out into the 'jam just isn't right. Think of how you would feel if it were you being put under the microscope? "See my diary on the newsstand, seems we've lost the truth to quicksand..." Think about that line for a little bit. -BABS ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Feb 96 15:01:04 +0100 From: nga@software-ag.de (Neil Gallop) To: email_address_removed Cc: email_address_removed.de Subject: Interesting reviews Message-ID: Hi all I'm in a generous mood today (my first pay rise for 2 1/2 years just came in), so I want to share something good with you. This morning, I was digging around the web looking for information about the amazing English band SKYCLAD, and I came across a review of one of their albums in something calling itself 'The War Against Silence'. This is a weekly music review, and it contains some of the best album reviews that I have read for a long time. It is intelligent, witty and well written. There is also a band index available, together with an archive of back issues. The review of ACoS is by far the best I have read. If you want to check it out (and I recommend you do) here is the address http://metaverse.com/vibe/twas/ Don't be disappointed if there is nothing about one of your favourite bands in there: the guy who writes the reviews does it in his spare time and for free, even if he does get a little confused at times, or did you know that JAMES Petrucci plays guitar for Dream Theater? If anybody actually bothers to check this stuff out, I would be interested to hear what you think of it. While I'm rattling on about SKYCLAD, I can only urge you all to get an earful of this band. There are already a few other jammers who are into them, but it would be shame for the rest of you to miss a band this good. Enough for today. I'm off to see Silverchair tonight (yes, it is possible to like Dream Theater *and* Silverchair), so I'm knocking off work early. stay safe and happy listening Neil Gallop (nga@software-ag.de) Currently playing: Skyclad - Irrational Anthems ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Feb 1996 09:03:25 -0500 (EST) From: Partha Mukhopadhyay To: email_address_removed Subject: Birch Hill Show.... Message-ID: I'd just like to post that it is not all that difficult doing things bit by bit! Sound quality remains good if not great because everything can go in direct. Recording the songs and parts depends on the situation, some might have to trust their partners to mix as they go(in VHS or even reg. 2track audio). As for the support of the project, we now have about 10 people who are willing. some problems will arise over the summer because some (like me ) won't have an e-mail account except at work, which means it gets a little expensive. There is no deadline on this project so far, so people who want to do it over the summer have the time to do so, communications to and from guys like me will have to be snail-mail or by phone, which is still no big prob. Also, it can be surprising how much fun it is to play something with a totally new cast! I'm recording stuff now with a guy from France!(I live in IL.) Also, I've never had the opportunity to play along with keyboards, and thru this type of project I got to do so!! Give the project a chance if you have musical talent, you could be pleasantly surprised!!! Peace out! *********************************************************** "Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most." *********************************************************** -Dev #17- email_address_removed ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Feb 1996 10:08:26 -0700 From: BILL HUSTON To: email_address_removed Subject: general stuff Message-ID: 'Lo jammers Lately I've seen several things on the jam I want to respond to: To Jill: You mentioned that females are usually introduced to mellower music and classical more often than men. Hey, this should give women an advantage to listening to prog rock. This is by far the most challenging type of music to listen to. I, with you, am surprised that there aren't more female prog jammers just because of this. Scott Cook: Fired AO HELL eh? Good move. My condolences to the Petrucci family. John Sr. must have been a good father in that we see and hear the final product John Jr. that he mentored (not necessarily musically). IVANHOE: I've seen a lot mentioned about Symbols Of Time. I have both CD's, and personally, I like Visions and Reality more because it is a little more progressive. The singing is not as refined on this one but it isn't offensive at all-just different. I got mine through email_address_removed. Am awaiting my copy of Superior from Jason Skewes. With all the hype about this band, I just had to order it, sound unheard. It worked for Ivanhoe so why not this? My cockatiels just hatched 2 babies. I have named them Bafu Vai and Ytse-Ben. Now I'll be up every two hours to feed them. You have to do this as they relentlessly screech for attention-hence, the names. ;> Their parents are named Mutt and Gizmo.
