I just got my tapes of the December Birch Hill show. I haven't listened to them yet, but I was wondering where I can get the J-Cards that Brian Cox was talking about. Help!! Also, this is not Dream Theater (take note all you players of the ytsejam drinking game!) content, but I still have an extra copy of Steve Vai's "Alien Love Secrets" unopened and brand-spankin' new. Like I said, it's an extra, so I'd be willing to trade for any DT/Rush material on very agreeable terms. Message-ID: This message is in response to my last post on the Ytsejam.... I didnt bother reading all the stupid flaming in regards to my statement about Eddie because I think its stupid! Someone's opinion on a certain guitarist is his opinion, not your's. Get that straight...ok? You have to understand that I prayed...(I fucking prayed) to Eddie Van Halen for 9 years.....If you ask people about me, they will tell you that I was more a follower of Eddie than anyone else....heres why I stopped.... Eddies new album is good, I'd even say its great...But its nothing new. I dont like his playing on it....He's not taking any chances...instead, he's tossing it off as being better music because it has short solos or no solo's (read GPMs first article with eddie after he got a haircut).... He's become what Ted Nuggent calls a "terminally flacid individual!! One that hasnt had a hard-on for years!" ...(Now nuge was refering to Lemmy of Motorhead, not Eddie of VH but Its begun to apply for me!) Eddie, START DRINKING AGAIN!!! Stop playing the same songs every concert.....If I hear another concert with "You Really Got Me, Aint Talkin Bout Love, Panama, Jump" being the only old stuff you do Im gonna puke!!! I would LOVE it it if you took the David Weave Roth material out of the set altoether but, hey change it around...Im sick of it.... Regardless...This is my opinion...screw off, if you dont like it... MojoMan PS. Oh by the way ..... Heres a list of other guitarists who either sucked always or are becoming an addition to the club: Jerry Cant~tell Mike McCrappy Stone BlowHard Kurt Corpain Thurston (no)Moore Dave Nabarfo ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Feb 1996 17:45:18 -0500 From: email_address_removed To: email_address_removed Subject: The drinking game & Birch Hill tape tree Message-ID: >>Alright... now you can get the f**king drinking game on the DT Archives... so... lets have another beer!!!<< You know, it would be nice if while the drinking game is being played, that an audio tape could be put in the tape deck so people on the taping tree could get their tapes. There is festival in Baltimore, Maryland to be held on Saturday June 29th and Sunday June 30th at Stephans Hall Theatre on the campus of Towson State University. It is called Progscape 96 and is brought to you by Chris Lamka who owns the music store "Of Sound Mind". You can find information on this on the WWW http://www.gl.umbc.edu/~mbacko1/progscape.html I can also field questions. There will be 8 bands and at least one will be a progressive metal band, 4 bands on each day. The band list will be finalized within the next month or so. And now I have a few opinions. (Please don't start a flame thread on anything I'm about to say. I'm not that important. A humble man.) 1) DT opening for Rush. No, sir, didn't like it. I've only had the opportunity to see Dream Theater twice. On I&W w/Galactic Cowboys, who blew me away, and on Awake w/Fates Warning & PushMonkey. Both times I got to see a close-to-2hour show by DT and, to tell you the truth, it spoiled me. It's kind of hard to see one of your favorite bands in a headline situation and have to regress to what is essentially a greatest-hits performance. In addition, the venue would become much less intimate depending on the popularity of the headliner. While I would enjoy a DT headlined show in a 10000+ setting, a 45 to 50 minute set would not satisfy my addiction. 2) When will everyone get off the "he's a better guitarist" crap. It all comes down to two simple statements: a) There are no bests, only favorites. b) There all still better that me. They sell records, I don't. So, I hope I've made a dent on the collective consiousness that is the 'jam, and leave you with the immortal words of Barney the Drunk from the Simpsons: "You mean this place has an exit" THE KID ============================================================================= "Frankly, I don't want to be a part of a progressive rock scene- I want to be part of a Dream Theater scene." - John Petrucci email_address_removed "don't ask me, I just work here." ============================================================================= ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Feb 1996 18:16:56 -0500 (EST) From: Elliott Kim To: Dream Thespians Subject: The Guitar Hero Debate Message-ID: The last word on this issue has already been said by the esteemed Bafu Vai: "There is no best. Remember in the late 80's how pop and glam rock was SO incredably popular? And at the same time, college radio was playing "alternative" and "grunge" rock. Well, in the mid 90's, the popular music is what college music used to be in the late 80's. College radio now has a LOT of prog rock shows (more than I thought, at least, after some research) and other than that, I'm not sure what the "average" college radio station plays. So, by reasonable deduction, does this mean that in the future (2000) the stuff being played on the college radio circut, prog rock, will be the popular stuff like alternative music became the popular in the 90's?? What I say all this for is this: If late 80's college radio EVENTUALLY spawned Lollapalooza, could the mid-late 90's college radio influence a Progressive festival??? I can see it now. Definately takes place inside. Medium sized venue, not large to ruin the together-atmosphere, and not too small, because by then, there will be more fans. Won't visit as many places as Lolla, but will travel to places within driving distance of people's abodes. Probably two stages. By then, there will be spawns of "progressive rock", like more technical Watchtower-like groups, special "magna-carta" feature times (oh, between 3-9 o'clock), more electric-synth bands, anglagard, and so forth, heavy prog like old Atheist, more mellow stuff, it all. What would there be for booths?? Lolla has hemp legalization and body piercing, so what could the prog fest have?? Any ideas? What could we do to make this somewhat a reality?? Whoever's serious, post and let whoever needs to know know. I personally think it's really hard to come close to the studio versions in terms of quality and especially sound. I think the best version of LSOAD is on Acoustic Dreams, and Take the Time from the Japan PPV. Actually, I don't think I've heard a better version of The Mirror than on the Japan PPV either. I think that To Live Forever has got to be the Lie single, simply because the added lyrics in the end are IMO the best part of the song. Moon Bubbles is best on the Images and Words Live in Tokyo video. Surrounded is best in the studio; while The killing Hand never sounded better than on Live at The Marquee. What do you all think? I also had a question about the insert to WDATU. Under To Live Forever, the lyrics printed "I felt you aware...." aren't even in this version of the song. Well, I guess it is sorta cool in that way. I think that Status Seeker may be the song that is improved the most with James singing. Message-ID: Word up, G's. It has turned out to be a good weekend. It appears that I've achieved immortality, now that the Drinking Game is up on the archives (thanks Nug and Dr. Mosh, chug one on me) and on Jeff Chew's (snicker) web page (the best of the bunch). Thanks to all who responded-- hope you all had as much fun reading it (and playing it) as I had writing it. Remember, though, boys and girls, that I'm just holding up the mirror to what's always been there. Oooh, profound, ain't it? Pretend I'm Mike Bahr and chug. You'd be amazed how little time it took to write-- I scribbled lines on 3 sheets of paper before dinner, and I typed it in on my Powerbook while watching Project ALF (it sucked, but I miss ALF). I then went out with some friends, watched the nudie scene of Animal House, witnessed a car crash, and got hammered at Sigma Pi. In case you wanted to know. Neil Gallop, it's good to hear from you. Where've you been, Germany or something? Achtung, baby. Mike Bahr, no hard feelings-- you'll still put my art on the covers of your CD's, right...?. BTW, is it pronounced "bear" or "bar"? You say tomato, I say tomahto. Star Wars rocks-- but I'll judge you by your size if I want to, muthafucka! ("Nice Dick!") Graham Borland, old chap-- your bloody pint of bitter is on its way, as soon as I figure out how to digitize the bastard. Oh, bloody hell. Bugger MY arse, you silly English kannnnnniggitt! (Jolly good, jolly good... cheerio, mate.) Damon Fibraio-- sorry to hear that you don't drink. For those of you non-drinkers out there, please substitute all drinking commands with "Stroke yourself X times if..." and you'll have just as much fun (how exactly did you go blind, Damon?). Or combine that with the drinking and you've got yourself an average college weekend. Anyone else I mentioned, Thank You, You're Welcome, or I'm Sorry, depending on your point-of-view. Chug-a-lug, quick, before this thread dies! Remember the Ancient Maxim: liquor before beer, you're in the clear; beer before liquor, never sicker (or get drunk quicker). Whoever wanted to know the name of Robert Plant's pre-Zep band with a Tolkien name, that would be Hobbstweedle. (Ever read "Bored of the Rings," Gandalf? Frito, Pepsi, and Legolamb wandering through the kingdom of Gonad?) Also, some of you liquor connosieurs out there, I think it would be extraordinarily cool to invent some mixed drinks specifically for the 'jam. I can see it now... the Glass Moon, the Killing Hand, the Bombay Vindaloo, the Silent Man, um... the Erotomania Punch. Yo, if you need a taste-tester, give me a buzz! (pun fully intended) I don't know... I just get that warm feeling inside when I realize that I'm cultivating Bacchalian behavior on the 'jam.
