Message-ID: Ystejammers, Here's the story on echolyn. I posted this to rec.music.progressive last week... LATEST FROM THE ECHOLYN CAMP... (Feb. 5, 1996) Though we are all saddened by the dissolution of echolyn, do not fear. A new echolyn CD is in the works. No, they didn't get back together, but a new album called, "When the Sweet Turns Sour" will be released in late March or early April. The band is now shopping the disc around to different labels in order to get funded for the production. One possibility is to get a Japanese label for support and then have it released in the United States. Don't worry though, the Japanese won't get any bonus tracks, so you won't need to buy the import. echolyn very much appreciates the support of its fans and will in no way leave anyone in the dust. "When the Sweet Turns Sour" will be like REM's "Dead Letter Office" in a way. It's a collection of b-sides in some respects while also being a new album. The new album will have... 2 songs that didn't fit on "as the world" 3 brand spankin' new songs (recorded in the fall of 1995) An acoustic version of "Meaning of the Moment" A cover of Genesis' "When the Sour Turns to Sweet" (was to be on Magna Carta's Genesis Tribute album) A live track from ProgDay '95 (either "Suite Thing" or "A Little Nonsense") (BTW, "Suite Thing" is a 12-minute abridged version of "A Suite for the Everyman") The total time will be approximately 45 minutes. echolyn is now offically free of Sony Music. According to Greg, the band was dropped about 7 months ago, but the documentation arrived about 10 days ago. To date, "as the world" has only sold about 15,000 copies. Sony wanted 50,000. Then again, Sony showed no support through promotion. So those of you that haven't bought it yet, shame on you. GO BUY IT and support some of the best and most unique progressive rock in existence. Ray, Paul, and Brett are assisting a fellow band at the moment, but will soon return to their own project for which they already have 5 songs written. Chris is writing his own material at the moment and says that his music will remain in the progressive/classical end of things. Tom hasn't been heard from since Christmas time. Best of luck to all!! For those of you looking to get any of the albums prior to "as the world," you are out of luck. "echolyn" (2000 copies), "Suffocating the Bloom" (3000 copies), and "...And Every Blossom (1000 copies) are all completely sold out. Bridge Management does NOT have anymore. There are about 9 cassettes of the first album remaining. Sony has bought the rights to the first three albums, but, unfortunately, don't expect them to ever be released. T-shirts (black with a red, gold, or green apple on the front) and videos are still available in limited quantities. Contact Bridge Management for availability. Well, that's the up to date news on echolyn. I hope you all will continue to listen to echolyn and support their music. Remember to look for "When the Sweet Turns Sour" in early April. I will send out updates as they become available. *If you have any more questions about echolyn, please feel free to E-mail me personally.* As far as Magna Carta albums, the only one I've gotten from MC that I don't like is Tempest. It's a Jethro Tull Scottish folk song repetitive thing. Yech. Anyway, Magellan, Enchant, Cairo, Shadow Gallery, and World Trade are all on MC. That's it for now besides the Yes, Pink Floyd, Genesis and Jethro Tull (coming soon) tribute CDs. Everything but Tempest is worth listening to. Magellan ("Test of Wills") and Enchant are to have new CDs this year and Shadow Gallery's first CD (s/t) is to be re-released. Great label with a pretty good track record. BTW, I heard "The Mirror" on the radio on my way to work this morning (90.3 WXLV, Lehigh Carbon Comm. College Radio, PA). ============================== Ghost email_address_removed "Ding!" Message-ID: Hi Fans, Many of you have liked my translation of the PORTNOY's Interview (3 Parts). Tanks to all of you ! This month, an interview of Mike PORTNOY, in the HARD FORCE, february 96 Issue. Have fun... H.F. : Why didn't you put the song 'A Change Of Seasons' on the I&W album ? M.P. : Our label ask us to remove it from the album the first day of recording. Strange start,no ? We have argued a long time (laugh) ! They thought the song was too long but they promised to us that they will release it later. Six years after, it's done ! H.F. : It was easy to found the original 'state of mind' of the song after so many years ? M.P. : Our 'state of mind' have changed a lot. The song was written in 1989, post-produced in 1991 for 'Images & Words' and sometimes played live in 1993. After two years, the title was re-animate ! When we have got the decision to record the EP, we have changed the title for 1995. Lyrics was changed too. My live was so 'perturbed' all these years, that's why some parts was totally out ! H.F. : How to include lyrics in these complex intrumental parts ? M.P. : We used to do intrumental parts first. I needed a concept for 'Iwages & Words' because my ideas couldn't be putted on short six minutes songs. That's the reasons why we have decided to write that long song. Step by step, we have discovered the evolution of a man and his apprenticeship of the life. The general idea turns around the life of this man. It's a metaphor on the base of the change of seasons and the change of climate during a year. H.F. : Is that man have relation with you ? M.P. : The story is invent but some things are gettibg from my own live. The song refear to the principle of 'Carpe Diem', like an appreciation of all we can do in our lives. That part refears to one epoch : The death of my mother. I wanted to write about that for riding out that bad moment. H.F. : After recording the covers in january 1995, it was for doing an EP ? M.P. : No, we have done that concert for fun. Only for playing covers on stage. We recorded it because we knew that we will use it -But not how and when ?-. When a lot of people have listened that fact, they have plagued us with questions. We finally arrange 'A Change Of Seasons' and the covers only for satisfy our fans ! H.F. : Is it true that the fans claim 'A Change Of Seasons' via INTERNET ? M.P. : It's fun because no members of Dream Theater have a computer. Some bands have a fan club connected to INTERNET, and our fans seems to be totally tear ! Inspired by one of our first composition 'MAJESTY', they have made the electronic fan club called 'YTSEJAM'. They exchange bootlegs, news, and they talk about the group. So many guys are implicated ,that they know Dream Theater better than our family (laugh) ! When we have played 'A Change Of Seasons' live, fans have got the bootleg with the song. Then, they have sent a petition to our manager with hundreds letters, these last with the order to release an EP with 'A Change Of Seasons'. Our manager transmites that 'command' to the label. And we have received the green light to do the project. H.F. : "A Change Of Seasons" marks the begining of Derek SHERININAN. M.P. : Yes ! Like Kevin wrote lyrics and was a very good friend, that change was very hard ! A lot of fans have taken a lot of time for accept Derek, until they have listened him live. He is a fantastic musician and he's able to play all the Kevin's parts, and much more... Of course, it will take the time for him, for being totally at ease in the composition. Before leaving the group, Kevin started to write songs like Tori AMOS or THE CURE, without any bearing on Dream Theater. Derek is a great musician. Many peoples used him for playing keyboard : Alice COOPER, KISS, ... Derek wished to join a group for a while. Lot of people recommend him to us ! H.F. : What do you think about 'Three Chords' groups, who sell millons CDs ? M.P. : Some of formations are good. I like FOO FIGHTERS and THE SMASHING PUMPKINS , anyhow they are very diferent, compared to us ! In music, 80 percent of people want to listen basic rock with three chords, the other 20 percent want something much technical. We have choiced our style. We accept to sell 500.000 albums, when other groups sell 8 millons CDs ! Our music brings to us satisfactions because we work so hard for it. I think our music will persiste in the time while others ones can't resist to a next fashion. There will be always a place for technical music, because all the fans of it don't care about the fashions ! H.F. : You're right ! I know men who're always listen "2112" from RUSH... M.P. : Exact ! By the way, I'm working for the Rush Tribute Album, with Billy SHEEHAN and others guys... H.F. : What about the new album ? M.P. : We finish our break. John PETRUCCI has twin and James LABRIE will be daddy soon. They have spend a lot of time with their family, of course. Personally, I organize drums clinics and I'm working on the RUSH tribute album. We start to record for the new album in february. This one will have to be finished for this summer I think. We have already finished a song called 'Raise The Knife'. It's a 12 minutes track. We don't change a lot as you can see (laugh). Interview by Daniel OLIVEIRA for HARD FORCE Translation by Bruno BIORDI Note to Ken BIBB : PLeaSe ! Check my translation ! There have been many great, nay tremendous musicians with terrible drug problems that played with incredible skill while doped up...Look at Charlie Parker..one of the best saxaphonists ever..in the jazz idiom.. he was a heroin addict!! Yes, it did eventually lead to his death, but he could play!! You can listen to any recording and I bet you he was messed up on it! Another example..not as serious but significant...the late Buddy Rich..yes, he is an incredible man..he was a pothead!! He smoked a lot of pot..yet he always sounded incredible...it didn't slow him down or lead to his demise...anything buddy did in his drumming carrer was better than what anyone has done since!!...at least technically... Lastly, the great Vinnie Colaiuta, the reincarnation of Buddy in our time...this man was on coke when he was with Frank Zappa, and some would claim that this was some of Vinnie's greatest work!..To this day I beleive Vinnie smokes pot.. By all of this I am not condoning drug use..merely saying that some have done incredible things while under the influence...Just think of what they could've accomplished. Then others would say that the drugs enhanced their performances....maybe for buddy..it slowed him down enough so we didn't think he was a government creation to take the music community by its balls and never let go!!
