Isn't it amazing how fast a gig can turn to shit right in front of your eyes?? In the middle of our 3rd song, 1st set, my Fender Super Twin starts sounding funny..I turn around and it is on fire. We are talking flames folks! It turned out to be a design flaw...bad power supply filter capacitors...try to find a spare amp on a Friday night in Eugene, Oregon ,after the firemen leave..... Another time our singer was really into a song and promptly fell off of the stage down into the audience and sprained his wrist besides falling on his face. This didn't happen to me but I swear to God it is true. A 'rival' band in Eugene had this drummer named Ben Hall...they called themselves "Halls Angels"...well Ben had this weird drumset where the bass drum was mounted horizontally, just like all of the other drums...the bass pedal went underneath the drum and hit the bottom drum head. Well it was Christmas and they decided to put some Christmas lights on the drumset...there was an electrical short and his set burned up...live!! on stage at one of the local high schools. I guess the finish on the set was highly flammable. Another time at a college gig some bikers crashed the party and decided that they wanted to play our instruments. After a few trys at "Louie Louie" they gave us our stuff back and we didn't get the shit kicked out of us. DT thread...next time one of us has a chance to talk to one of the guys lets ask them to relate some of their horror stories...everyone has some. Vote For Portnoy In The Modern Drummer Poll....sorry Ben Laussade, but he is better than you. Double tapes in trade or some other arrangements could be made. As for no one in DT even inhaling a cigarette, doesn't MP smoke one in LIT when he crossed Abbey Road. Looks like a used pack, too. The following is a completely true story: I have (had) a tape copy of AWAKE that I used as work commute music. On the way home one day I was stuck in heavy traffic, windows down, and Lie started up. After about a minute the guy next to me got my attention and asked what I was listening to. He hadn't heard of them, the tape had been played at least 3 days a week for the last 9 months or so and I was contemplating a new copy, so I ejected the tape and tossed to him through the window. Last time I saw him he was jamming to LSoaD. Another convert!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rock On!!!!!!!!!!!!! So Machine Fish was quite a surprise. My thoughts of the album are that 1) it's not nearly as good as the first two, but I don't think it totally sucks. This could be due to the fact that I never get to hear new "metal" or "prog rock" anymore with the alternative music fad of today. I like alt. music, but I really miss new rock coming out. 2) The songs are not very melodic and the harmonies are drowned out by the guitars...or is it that they just aren't singing like they used to? I always thought the big appeal of GC was the 4 part harmonies and on this new album 3) It's a decent album, one that might have cross-over capabilities, but it's just average, with nothing really sticking out. I like it simply because I'm a fan, but I think it could be a lot better. The complexity of the songs is much less than previous albums. Someone mentioned hating their lyrics. I understand that they are not very "intellectual," but they're doing their own thing...and that is just being cornball, silly musicians and I think that's part of the appeal. It may not be your style, but don't knock them for just having some fun. It's kinda like the B-52's or They Might Be Giants (ack!). If you want to be in a silly mood, listen to GC. If you want to get more in a somber reflective mood, listen to Dream Theater. Just my two cents... Geddy Lee does all the singing but Neil Peart writes all the lyrics. The same holds true with Elton John. Bernie Taupin writes all his lyrics too. In some bands the singer has no input at all. I'm not a songwriter so I can't tell you exactly why that is. Maybe James never did any songwriting before joining DT and so his songwriting skills may be limited. To me, DT seems to be a band where everybody contributes, where some bands only one or two people do all the songwriting. This is *IMO*, I could be wrong. They got their own ad!! Okay, I know two things: (1) Awake WAS in cut-out bins all over this area. (2) Columbia House doesn't stock items that haven't already sold well and aren't continuing to sell. (1) + (2) + (half-page ad) = The tide be turning. (don't flame me all you sudden language-masters) Someone tell DT that the waves have carried them on. :) "With their dazzling instrumental prowess, soaring vocal harmonies and epic songs, Dream Theater has become THE Progressive band of the 90's. Responding to a desperate letter campaign from their fans, the metal heroes finally release the 23-minute cult-classic title suite, plus monster medleys honoring the likes of Zep and Queen--and more." ($12.98) Okay, Buck, get out yer flamethrower and blast Columbia House. They called Dream Theater me---met---geez, take a deep breath Steve you can do this... METAL. Whoah, that felt good. Yeah, I guess after forcing myself to say such a word I can stop fooling myself and just listen to "The Mirror" and not refer to it as...who cares what they think, Steve, speak already... "classical with an edge." Ahhhhh. Can't you all just feel that tension- thermometer plummeting? CH also has Awake ($15.98) and I&W ($14.98) in the ad, right beneath that synopsis. Oh yeah, the synopsis is beneath, get this, an outtake photo from the ACOS back cover. Okay, okay, what that means is that CH somehow got ahold of one of the group-shots that DT decided not to use for the back cover. LaBrie is in the background instead of the foreground, and Myung switched places with Sherinian. It makes for an interesting photo because my eyes are so used to seeing a giant LaBrie head in most DT group photos. :) Here now, ten points towards getting your .sig trimmed if you can match these synopsii (plural? help me all you sudden language-masters) with their respective DT albums. Well I received the cd in the mail this past week and it is really good! He doesn't play guitar on too many of the songs due to his illness, but all the compositions are his (except for "Meet Me In the Morning" which is Bob Dylan's). But he still sounds great on the guitar work he did do even with his illness. The music on this cd is so rich and unexpected. He adds Native American, African, Rock, Blues, and Classical flavors to the music. There are many musicians who contributed to this from Steve Perry to Bobby McFerrin's Voicestra. Michael Lee Firkins also does the guitar work on one song. This cd really showed his talents. I always knew he was a great guitarist but I found out he's a great composer also. You really should check this out. If you want more info, e-mail me personally and I'll be happy to help. Seize the day! I have an Ensoniq TS-10 which has the separate wheels and a Roland XP-50 with a joystick type controller. I like the wheels better. Granted, the joystick is easier for some applications, but still. Actually, if one can just have both that would even be better. I don't even know what this ribbon thing is. And basically, what does the Trinity and Prophecy sound like and what are the differences anyway. They have also completed another entitled "Where Are You Now" with lyrics by John P. The other one they have finished, has the working title of "Cats Tail" but James informs me that at this point the title is likely to be "Take Me There". He has penned the lyrics to this one, and is reflective of one's place in society! They have also completed many grooves and riffs that are to be incorporated into other songs. James also stated that the new material "has elements of Pink Floyd, Peter Gabriel, Kings X etc. very sophisticated." It seems as though the new album will be an interesting mix of styles and sounds, and should be very appealing to a wider range of music fans, and not just us hard-core DT fans. So hopefully, the band will attain the wider acknowledgement that they surely deserve? That's it for now, Neil Elliott (editor of "Images & Words" the band's 'Official Fanzine') P.S.
