Message-ID: James most certainly IS a classically trained tenor. Pavarotti wouldn't be able to sing perfectly either if he had guitars, keys, and drums all cranked to ridiculous levels right in the frequency range in which he is supposed to sing. Vocal orchestral music is written with dips in the frequency spectrum to accommodate the singer. That is one of the reasons why singers for hundreds of years have sung with 70-piece orchestras with no amplification whatsoever. Rock music is an amplified medium. James does better than any rock vocalist could be expected to in the horrible singing environment of the club stage. No monitor system in the world is going to help you out in that situation. However you could put James on stage w/ an orchestra at the Met, where there is no amplification, and he would fare as well as he does in the studio. It's nice to know how many people out there (besides myself) have a true appreciation for this great band. A little bit of info that many of you may appreciate, is that John Petrucci was my guitar teacher!!! About 6 years ago, when I was in a bit of a guitar "rut," I decided just to take a few lessons over at one of the local music stores, in Commack, L.I. It's too bad I didn't know then what I know now. Sure, I was enamoured by John's musical mastery and custom Ibanez guitar, but I never knew the band and just figured he was another guy trying to make it in a merciless industry. Needless to say, he taught me well and will forever be one of my guitar heroes. So, when I saw DT at Malibu, L.I. last week it was the first time I had ever seen them. Need I say more. Awesome. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Jan 96 15:01:02 -0500 From: "Trey (T-Stretch) Allen" To: email_address_removed Subject: New YtseShirt info - READ ALL - Message-ID: =====NEW INFO AND CHANGES!!!========= 1st thing- I need the money for the shirts by the 5th of Feb... Okay, here it is. Overall I'm not afraid to say that any King Crimson or Robert Fripp CD you get, you won't be disappointed. I'm telling you. Just about any of their albums is a masterpiece. Of course that would be strictly my opinion. The very first King Crimson CD I got was their first album 'In the court of the crimson king' which is definitely a must. Their new albums are very different but one can still tell that it's them. If you would like to hear what they sound like these days, you should pick up either 'Thrak' or their official bootleg double CD 'live in Argentina.' A lot of people's been telling my I'm kinda young to be a fan of King Crimson. I just saw them in concert for the first time last year in Chicago. That was definitely the best show I've ever seen. They played at a very fancy concert hall too, not at any bars (not saying bars are not good but I just thought it was interesting to see a rock band playing at a place like that where you are not allowed to stand up during the performance). Anyways, good luck with discovering King Crimson, Mark! You'll enjoy it! It's definitly worth it. Later! There's also a Live LP & video of Brian live at The Brixton Academy from 15 June 1993 that has an absolutely killer solo from Brian. He may not do the shredding that JP does, but then again, that's never been Brian's style. Also on the same LP, there's an INCREDIBLE drum solo by skins master Cozy Powell. Also, for any KISS fans out there; the band will be announcing dates for a reunion tour with the original four IN MAKEUP with their Love Gun tour Costumes and Stage. I've already seen them during their makeup days, but if you've never got the chance to see them during their heyday, now's your chance. I've been sitting by for a while and decided to say something... I was listening to my older CDs the other day, and I came through "Bonham", who if you don't know, was a band that put out a couple of albums. The first "The Disregard of Timekeeping" came out in 1989, and their second "Mad Hatter" came out in '92. As far as I know, thats all they've done, and thats a shame. My point is that when I first heard DT in the music store, they were who DT reminded me of. They're music is kind of like to Led Zeppelin what DT is to Rush. The music is excellent, and they're many similarities to DT's style. The band is from England, and consists of Daniel Macmaster (vox), Ian Hatton (Guitars), John Smithson (Keys, Bass, vox, and violins), and Jason Bonham (Drums; yes, this is John Bonham's son!). Anyway, if you like DT and Zeppelin, then you'd certainly like these guys. Does anyone know if they've done ANYTHING since "Mad Hatter"? -------------------------------------------------------- As a side, about the future setlist stuff. I have seen many people mention that certain songs from I&W will dissapear, like Surrounded and LTL, while they'll always play songs like Another Day and TTT. Sorry...but the last two shows I've been to, they've played Surrounded, and one of them they played LTL, but at neither did they play Another Day or TTT. Now if you compare this situation to RUSH, who've been playing for over 20 years now, I haven't seen them play anything from before like Perm Waves except for Closer to the Heart and maybe Xanadu. Maybe a couple others, but not many...and thats out of a good 6-7 albums. Given that Rush has a huge amount of material, but they can't play something from everything or they're show would be like 5 hours long. Not that I'd mind much, but I don't think the band would be to happy after a 3 month tour. More or less, if DT is still playing 15 years from now, I won't expect them to play much from the first few albums, even the popular songs (Fly By Night anyone?), but I'll be glad to have seen them when they did! Message-ID: <199601242351.PAA15223@main> I don't know who it was who complained about Ytsejam subscribers all being metalheads, but he is wrong. I have seen many posts from classical musicians. I include myself in this category; I've been classically trained in piano and upright bass. Next, James LaBrie may not exactly fit in with Marilyn Horn (although I think so), his vocals are awesome displays of talent (and range! Wow!). He has helped the DT sound become independent and distinctive. No mere "metalhead" would be content to listen to DT; DT fans are more than that. Dream Theater's music is complex and interesting, and each band member has proven to me that he is vital to their sound. This is my first post to the new and highly improved jam since winter break. It was cool reading about everyone's show stories (although I had to sift through 15,000 jams to get to them). Did I miss/delete something about a possible bootleg of one or all of the shows? Anyone with any information on these tapes (or any information against these tapes) please e-mail me. Oh, and I got Mind Control (thanks to Michael Backof). It's really cool. James sounds much better than on a Denver radio broadcast I have. Great transitions between songs and the blues jam at the end of TTT is much clearer. Anyone else get shivers right before the intro of PMU when that voice screams "WAKE UP!"? Frankly, I don't believe there is a band that can top DT in either composing or performing, and that includes "The Great" Van Halen and all those other dried-up has-beens. But today I decided to postpone my physics homework for a few more minutes in order to respond to the post I read in Digest 1235 by a certain arrogant dorkhead who goes by the name of "Mr. Serious." I hope you are reading this, Mr. Serious, because even though you have proclaimed yourself a music expert, there are also a few of us without Master's Degrees who also know a thing or two about good bands. What I hated the most about your little editorial was your unwelcome and definitely un-founded criticism of James LaBrie's voice. I don't know if you sing, but I do, and I can tell you for certain that his singing style takes at least as much (if not more) talent, practice and strength to master as that of any professional opera singer. I know that LaBrie has trained classically and it definitely shows on every album. I have not heard too many tenors who can float such high notes so beautifully and with so much power. Do you have any idea what sort of strength and flexibility a singer's vocal chords and diaphragm must must possess to be able to sing so clearly and so strongly? I have worked for years trying to sing higher, stronger, and longer without sharping or flatting, and I've come pretty far, but I can only hope that I will one day be as good as he is. Even though LaBrie is a man and almost twice my age, I try to learn things from him when I listen to him sing. It is unfair of you to say that James LaBrie is "no classically trained tenor." You are certainly entitled to your own opinion, but don't try to downplay his skill level and versatility as a vocalist. Granted, I have never heard him sing an opera aria, but I'll bet he does it a hell of a lot better than the Three Tenors do popular music. (Want to give your ears a scare? Listen to Pavarotti do a number from "Cats") So the next time you want to rag on one of the best male vocalists in the world (and that is exactly what you did whether you meant to or not), don't. And another thing: Don't try to tell us "stupid metalheads" what we like. The one thing all of us Jammers have in common is that we love Dream Theater's music. One does not have to have a good reason to love music. If we happen to think that DT does a great job harmonizing with their instruments and working all those tricky little intricacies into their songs, then that's good. Keep in mind, though, that most of us have better things to do than memorize the key signature of every measure and analyze all the chords. So that's all I have to say about that. If you're offended, Mr.Serious, then too bad. It's not intolerance... it;'s called opinions... look into it... just because they do variations on their songs (which is something I personalyy love) doesn't mean every variation they do is good... and if someone doesn't lik a 'subtlety' for some reason... does that make them a metalhead? > I also feel this is why so many people on >the Jam honestly believe that James L. is a truly great singer. Personally, >I think he is a decent singer, who who especially records well in the studio, >but whom live exhibits poor diction and even poorer control over his pitch and >overall vocal quality. A classically-trained tenor he is NOT. Actually he studied opera for 4 and a half years... and in case you didn't know, mr. masters degree in music... the technique opera singers use sacrifices diction for volume... and I think that LaBrie, although he's obviously not gonna sing like friggin' Pavarotti in a rock band, uses a modification of that technique which is why he can scream so much without losing his voice so quickly... and he's an excellent control of his pitch in comparison w/ every other rock singer I,ve heard... but of course, my opinion doesn't matter because I don't have a masters in music (sarcasm included) maybe I will be enlightened when I get my own (even more sarcasm) ----------------------------------------- Guten Gott!
