Traders! Check out my music list at: http://stud.uni-sb.de/~tiku ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Jan 1996 20:33:21 -0500 (EST) From: Brian Wherry To: DT List Subject: The NAMM show, JP, etc. Message-ID: Hey y'all! I just had a rather pleasant trip out to California to the National Association of Music Merchants Trade Convention at the Anaheim Convention Center. It was heaven for a guitar gear-nut like myself! There were also all kinds of rock stars all over the place, which was pretty neat. So I bet you guys wanna hear some Dream Theater news, eh?! Well, here's a little: John Petrucci was there! Yeehaw! He did an autograph session at the Hoshino (big-ass company that owns Ibanez, TAMA, Laney, etc.) booth on Friday, and a couple on Saturday. Judging by the huge crowds he attracted every time, I'd say he's pretty popular! BTW, there's a new JPM signature guitar -- well, it's the same as the first one, but the Picasso graphic deal uses a different color scheme. Also, I don't think that production is going to be limited to 100 on this one. Gentlemen, (and ladies) open your wallets! The highlight of the JP-fest was his PERFORMANCE (yup, that's right, kids) at the Lexicon booth on Saturday. Throughout he was playing PCM-80 presets and saying how great the Lexicon PCM-80 multi-effects processor is. Anyway, he played a bunch of things. He started off with this clean tone "warm-up" thing, which was awfully pleasant. Then he played along with a DAT from one of their shows from the AWAKE tour -- it was some solo spot deal -- only Derek accompanying him. Then he played along with a DAT of Erotomania -- very cool! He was so close that one could actually hear some sounds coming DIRECTLY from his guitar!! One could even hear when he switched pickups! And let me say, he played Erotomania totally flawlessly! (BTW - he attracted quite a huge crowd -- much bigger than when Blues Saraceno played at the Lexicon booth the day before!) After that (and a bunch of cheering and clapping from the crowd) he played along with a DAT of a sequence he did. Some of the drum sounds were techno-sounding, but the tune was very cool! And then he was done! In between the tunes, he talked about what patches he was using on the PCM-80 and whatnot -- he also answered people's questions and stuff. Something that I noticed that kind of made me worry: JP was wearing a wrist brace on his right wrist. I hope he's not having major problems or anything. That would suck. Also, he was wearing -- HIS YTSEJAM SHIRT!! Yippie! I took some pictures, if y'all don't believe me. Well, that's about it! Mike Portnoy was supposed to do an autograph session deal, but he wasn't there when it said he was going to be there. Oh well. Other non-DT information: Steve Vai has a 10th Anniversary Jem guitar out, that is very slick lookin'. Also, Ibanez has reissued the Universe 7 string (the black one with the green pickups and stuff). Andy Timmons has a solo album out, and he was personally selling them at the show. Guitar players: go get some DR strings. They're really awesome! Well, that's all I can think of! Questions? Comments? Feel free! Jam on! Brian ps- No Sara McLachlan. :`( No Marc Bonilla. This is going to sound really outdated but the Malibu show kicked ass. I just wish they did Metropolis, oh well, it ruled anyway. I'm wearing thermal underwear the next time I go to a Malibu show, waiting outside for that long was quite uncomfortable. New topic, after hearing so much about Fates Warning on the jam I decided to get a cd of theirs, I had no idea what to get so I got Inside Out. It was ok, but nothing to write to granny about. Not quite at the DT level. I'm curious, who's who? It's got that big picture of them but it doesn't tell you who they are, it doesn't even tell you who plays what. I'm just curious. All I know is that one guy looks like a bum in Penn Station. I'm getting outta here. Later. ---Kris Long "He doesn't like you. I don't like you either. You better watch yourself, we're wanted men. Turned out that when DT played Jersey, the opening act had ex- Winger drummer Rod Morgenstein (sp?) on drums and he was working as Rod's roadie, trying to set up his drums in the 10 minutes DT gave him. Being a roadie has its perks... he got to watch Rod and the DT guys rehearse. According to him, James LaBrie did not come in and sing with the guys until the last 30 minutes while the rest of the band has been jamming for hours, playing medleys of band favorites, including Zep classics that did not appear on the ACOS EP. He also said that Derek appears to be the one having the most problems with his parts and wasn't really fitting in the band's playing too well (he did not know that Derek replaced Kevin and thought he was with the band from the beginning). My friend also mentioned that Mike was the boss who called the shots througout the rehearsal. That was rather interesting since it paints a completely different picture from what I've been hearing on the 'jam. People described Mike as more of a "DT fan" who showed nothing but enthusiasm, but according to my friend, Mike had a minor attitude and definitely runs the show as far as dictating the band goes! He also said that John Myung was a very quiet guy (no surprise there...) and the coolest thing was how he had dinner with the guys and was able to get me a band photo autographed by everyone... :) [sig trimmed] Eddie /::::::::- Email: email_address_removed -::::::::\ \:::::-~ http://www-scf.usc.edu/~edju/ ~-:::::/ \:-~ ~-:/ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Jan 1996 10:59:40 +0100 From: email_address_removed.nl (Gerralt Partiman) To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: YTSEJAM digest 1234 Message-ID: The e-mail address of the lateshow with David Letterman is: email_address_removed I don't think we should hook DT up with Dave since he is not funny at all. I had to mail out a lot of overseas shipments first, which has delayed the domestic orders a little, because of how long it took to resolve lost-mails with the overseas orders for AD and Subcon. I've already started depleting the domestic pile, though. Ironically, just as the poison control people predicted, that scorpion gave me venom fever, a strange hybrid of the flu and a head cold, that normal cold medicines do NOTHING for. It's finally working its way out of my system today. It didn't interrupt WDATu shipping any, but it did slow up my work on Antiquities. :( I highly recommend to everybody NOT to get stung by a scorpion. Thanks to all those who wished me well. RUSH: LEGENDS/CRITICAL MASS orders: at the risk of sounding like the Death Star Control Room officer, "Please stand by..." I'm almost ready to begin accepting orders/reservations for it, but I need youall to hang tight just for a little bit longer. Trust me. :) I order the CDs in sort of a cyclical fashion with the CD company, and then do my work in the pressing room on a schedule, and my being sick plus the original delay in WDATU set me back a bit on Antiquities, and I don't want to begin accepting orders for CM until I'm actually _making_ it. Did anyone else catch Tori Amos on Saturday Night Live... and what a TERRIBLE episode of SNL huh... I mean, Tori was the only reason worth keeping the dial on NBC. We started switching to Beavis 'n Butthead when she wasn't on as the show got duller. I'm wondering if the shipment of Acoustic Dreams for Japan (to Kaoru) arrived safely and is in the hands of its owners now? About 2 months ago, I sent it registered-mail and I'm sort of curious to know. (sucker cost me 50 bucks just to mail!!) Well, thanks everyone for being so patient with me, I hope your WDATU arrives soon and may the force be with you. Message-ID: LIMITED EDITION COMPACT DISCS Information and Update, Current to 1/23/96 1. Introduction Dear Ytsejammers, for those who don't know me (hmm... that's most of you), my name is Marcel Berkhout and I am the second guy (you all know the first one) on the Ytsejam list to make bootlegs. I'm from Holland, keep that in mind if you find any typos :) Like Mike Bahr I'm not out to scam all of you and make huge amounts of money. I'm really into bootlegs and this is the perfect way for me to broaden (sp?) my horizons (wow!) As you can see I took the liberty of copy-ing Mike Bahr's update-style. I think it's something you all are familiar with and easy to read. 2. What is .................. (still looking for a good name, hint!, hint!) This was my 4th Dream Theater concert of the year and probably one of the most memorable 'cause they played ACOS!! It was recorded on the 8th of July this summer during an outdoors festival called 'Bospop' (Please don't ask me why it's called that way). Dream Theater didn't headline the festival, but judging from the amount of people wearing DT t-shirts most of them came to see DT :) A friend of mine recorded the show with his portable DAT-recorder and some great mics, so the quality of the recording is great, especially for an outdoor show. Aahh hell.... might as well tell you all the truth.... the only negative thing I can think of is that there are some people (with no vocal ability whatsoever) can be heard from time to time during the 'easier' and 'slower' songs (LSOAD and Another Day). I hope this doesn't bother to many people. Because DT didn't headline the festival they only played for 70 minutes. The setlist was : Intro Under a Glass Moon Lifting Shadows of a Dream Voices A Change of Seasons Another Day Pull me Under [encore] 6:00 The booklet will contain actual pictures from the festival, all FULL color of course! I have some cool ideas for this :) 3. Possible titles! Here are some titles people sent me : "The Inevitable Summer festival" "The Inevitable Summer" "LIVE will not always be this way" "Seasons change" "Carpe Diem - Seize the Day" "Carpe diem" "Seize the day" "Dreams in the Open Air" "HOLLAND SUMMER FESTIVAL -95" "BOSPOP FESTIVAL -95" "SEASONS OF CHANGES" "THE SEASONS IN HOLLAND" "ANOTHER DAY ANOTHER SEASONS" "6 AM IN WEERT" "DREAM SEASONS" "SUMMER SEASONS" "UNDER A FESTIVAL MOON" "ON STAGE IN HOLLAND" "Dreaming of a Changed Season" "A Dream of Seasons" "Theater of Changes" "Mixed Seasonings" "Dreaming of Dutch" "Dreaming in Dutch" "Windmill of dreams" Let me know what you think! 4. What is the release schedule? YES! I have reached the magic number of 100 copies! I'm still not sure about a release date, but I think it will be around April/May or something like that. I need that much time 'cause I have to start making plans first now. I have to contact the person who took the photos at the festival, the person who prints the booklets, etc. etc. I have gotten a lot of replies from people asking me where to send the money. When the time comes all the info you need will be in the UPDATE. I'll post regular updates to the 'Jam with the progress. 5. How much will .......... (fill in name here) cost? I'm not out to compete with Mike Bahr, so my prices will be exactly the same as his. ($25 base cost) I'm not sure about the postage yet, but I think that it won't differ much from Mike's prices. 6. The reservations [The reservation list would have taken 1/4 of the available digest space so it has been made available (as part of the original message) via email. To retrieve it send: get ytsejam berkhout.960123.txt to ytsejam-request@arastar.com with a subject of "asdf"] 7. Future products After this one, I still have two great shows from Utrecht in Holland. The sound quality is even better (IMHO) than 'Dance of Eternity' both shows are 125 minutes. For that reason a double CD is required (duh!). I hope I can do one of those before the summer (July). 8. Famous Last Words To conclude my update I would like to thank everyone who reserved a copy. I hope that I can manage to get the project rolling fast now, because there's a lot of work to do for me. If you have any questions about the project, feel free to e-mail me anytime.
