Awake and the new version of ACoS has got some pretty brutal guitar-riffs, which you cannot hear in the same degree on IAW. Some of these riffs sounds like if the guitar is actually tuned too low! I just can't see DT as a band which are down-tuning their guitars! (and bass offcause). This is another letter about the Birch Hill show. It was my first show and I must say it was one of the most incredible things I have ever been to. I want to say hi to everyone I met, especially Brian, Ryan, and what's-his-name, the warm guy. I have been a DT fan for a long time now but I could never have imagined how incredible they are in person. It is rare to find a group that can actually perform better live than recorded. A true measure of ultimate talent. Now, if only I could get a recording of the show... Of course they did get a hell of a lot of help from the crowd. What an awesome group! Unfortunately, I missed the get together before hand but everyone I met at the show was great. We should have some type of monthly get together or something to just hang out and get to know the rest of the great people in the world (DT fans!)! There were a couple who could have used some help but hell, we can't win 'em all! The best we could hope for is the death of the roadie, slow and painful! Overall it was a fantastic night. I had a plane to catch and missed them afterward but if anyone could fill me in on what went on it would be appreciatd. [The concert reviews are in digests 1208 on--kbibb] I will be at my regular address as of the sixteenth. The only real question I have is when is the repeat performance? I can't wait, as I am sure neither can all of you! Have a great day guys and I will be back when have regular computer service again. Until then, don't worry, there is always Dream Theater! Message-ID: well, i have more or less listened to the "chasing time" cd as i was recommended, and i have to say............i'm a bit disappointed. one thing for sure- i hear the queensryche influence. i could swear there were times i thought i heard degarmo and wilton, and i heard geoff tate a lot. not that i don't like queensryche- i absolutely love them. in my top 3 of favorite bands (behind pink floyd and dt). there are some interesting prog elements abound, but i also heard stuff that turns me off a lot. i heard a little too much of that phrygian-y guitar solo melody that seemed to stereotype that heavy metal genre (along with harmonic minor). zzzzzz........ who plays keyboards? that wasn't too bad. some of tunes just seemed to be way too long (or at least feel that way). the 1st 2 songs reflect this opinion. my general comment would be this: they are quite accomplised musicians, but they (for my own personal taste) are way too queensryche-y for me to swallow. if i want to listen to "rage for order", i'd pop THAT cd on. if i want to hear chris degarmo (one of my all-time favorite guitarists), i'd pop on "empire" or "mindcrime." someone (i think it was mr. bahr) recommended me king's x as well. i have "gretchen" and "king's x." those are good albums, and quite progressive. and just cause they're a trio, it don't mean they sound like rush. i like stuff to be different, and i guess this is what lacked with fate. oh well, maybe the galactic cowboys will be better. any other recommendations on the modern prog thang that i should check out? please let me know. i am committed to broadening my knowledge, however much i like or dislike.....thanks anyways, and see ya. hope you're all loving the 4576243 feet of snow. david, the buried in not enough snow kobayashi ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 8 Jan 1996 23:06:29 -0500 From: "George W. Anyone insulting your abilities are just "amusing" themselves. Especially people that aren't even vocalists themselves. I'm a classically trained keyboardist. I've been playing for 20 years. I consider myself a good player. I'm better than alot of people, and there are alot of people better than me. Even so, I wouldn't expect Derek to listen to any criticism I would offer. For starters, i have none. I think he's great. But that's not the point. The point is, who gives a shit what people think? Are you playing music to please the world? I don't think so.
