As far as you thinking it is "childish" for us to get off on meeting them and shaking hands, let me put that into perspective a little bit: If someone came into your life and inspired you to the extremes that DT inspires me, you would not want to go through life never having had the chance to meet them, or tell them in person "you changed my life! thank you for what you create and not giving up on doing what you do best!". If the pictures are all I can get for now, then YES I want them! But I would surely feel like I was in heaven if I was blessed with the opportunity to meet the band that I believe to have most musical talent in the world...to meet someone like John Petrucci whom I consider to be the most skilled and controlled guitar player on the planet! We're not a bunch of little teeny boppers jumping onto a bandwagon of a current fad. DREAM THEATER is not a fad! They are all elements of music and it's reason for existance rolled up into one small group of human beings. Childish or not, it would be a great honor for me to meet the guys that have made me feel like "real" musicians have not yet become extinct. They stand for a lot of things, but the main thing is that they have not given in to a "fad" oriented money pinching business...they write thier music without compromise, and they play it with a never ending enthusiam and devotion to detail and being the best that they can on every song. Let me ask you this Stefan, isn't their anyone that you would be honored to meet? If not, then where DO you get your inspiration to live?? "The way that your heart sounds, makes all the difference, in learning to live.." We shouldn't treat celebrities and "rock stars" like they're better than us. I've done that before, making a total ass of myself in the process. They have to take a shit just like the rest of us mere mortals. Fame does not equal "godliness." Just look at someone like Jeffery Dahmer. Most people can recognize him, but does that mean he was a great person? Or how about OJ. I could recognize the name before his trial, but I couldn't tell you what he looked like, or anything else for that matter. Even now if I saw him walking down the street I'd withhold the urge to say "nice job covering your ass, you bastard." I'd just walk right on by without a word; he doesn't deserve the attention. This isn't to say presumably law-abiding citizens (e.g. the members of DT) don't deserve recognotion; they just don't deserve to be treated like higher forms of life, because they're not. Sure they can play and write better than myself and many other young musicians, but don't treat them as if they're gods, because I know musicians better than me with attitudes that make them as worthless to humanity as the tree sloth. Don't make the bands we listen to become big-headed ego-maniacs, OK? That is all. ________________________________________________________________________________ Debbie Seeger University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Music Major (Recording Technology emphasis) Internet - email_address_removed ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 6 Jan 96 17:07:48 -0500 From: "Trey (T-Stretch) Allen" To: email_address_removed Subject: NEW YTSEJAM T-SHIRTS! and $$ Message-ID: ------READ EVERYONE------ Since everyone seemed to like the YtseCon shirts AND I am going to have to have more made anyway, I am going to alter them and make some Ytsejam shirts. (and so on but I'm not going to rewrite the whole thing.) and then a little before that you hear the little kid say "...I'll get a job, get my own place...". Well I was shocked to hear those lines in this (I think Canadian) documentary movie thing I had to watch in my Child Psychology class 2 semesters ago! I wish I could remember what the name of the movie was. All I remember is that it was something regarding child abuse, etc. and some social workers set up cameras in this house and those words were from the little kid (Evan) and his step-dad (Mike). I'm gonna try to find out what the name of the movie is and I'll post that. Thanks for all the stuff on the holiday shows! I didn't go but it's cool to hear about it. I really hope that there will be a midwest Ytsecon or that DT will play Michigan again in the near future. I am disappointed to hear all that James bashing stuff! Hell, that guy has one of the most incredible voices I've ever heard! You know I heard someone bashing him big time once when I started a Dream Theater chat room on AOL. Someone came in and really started up on that and I got pissed. I've stopped creating those rooms cause I either get someone who has no idea who DT is, they think it's some kind of fantasy room and they start propositioning cyber-sex or something, or someone who does but just likes to criticize. This one was recorded live at the URAWA BUNKA CENTER, Saitama, Japan on January 24th, 1995. It's a real good one even though there's nothing off WDADU. Does anyone like the band "Death"? I recently picked up their latest album, "Symbolic". Some really good metal. The drummer is friggin awesome. I'm not a very good judge of guitar playing, so I'll just stay out of that one. It sounds good anyways. The only downside is the guy's voice. It's not so much that the actual _sound_ of it is bad, just that he stays on the same single note through the whole album. And its not even a reeeeeally cool deep growl. It's this high, supergravely scream thing. It would be cooler if he screamed regularly and saved his gravel scream for special occasions. I don't know why I'm saying this because probably about 3 of you have actually heard Death. Oh! Well? Ytse-Ben doesn't want to comment on James's voice...but he will. IMO, he has the perfect voice for DT music. FROM WHAT I'VE HEARD, and I could be wrong, it probably wouldn't sound as good if James sang alternative or country or something, cause that's not the kind of voice that he has. I am very glad that James is DT's vocalist, and would not want it any other way. Ben "Finally Got His Double Bass Drum Pedal" Laussade "Tweet, tweet, tweet!"
