Yes, it did suck that the doors opened late and therefore the concert was shorter than it should have been. The reason I heard was that they were having technical difficulties during sound check. Rather than waiting out in the cold, I simply went one street over to another bar and had a drink. As for them being booted off the stage at 1am, it was NOT the club owners. I have met Scott McGruder, the owner, and he is quite cool. It was the police that did it. Did you happen to notice them SWARMING around both inside and out as we left?? Connecticut has some pretty lame laws, one of them being that bars must close at 1am on weeknights! So when the cops come and say it's 1am, everyone gets booted. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- | Meghan A. Message-ID: Just a coupla points to make about the Birch Hill show. 1.) WAY too crowded, but really no moshing, except for 2 or 3 drunk people throughout the night - quite impressive. 2.) Apologies to everyone who was kicked out of the Fantazia - if I had taken Heather's advice, it wouldn't have happened, but I had no idea the manager was to be a prick. Their diner will be bombed shortly :) 3.) WHOEVER THE BLOND WOMAN WHO ALMOST REAR-ENDED ME BEHIND THE FANTAZIA DINER WAS, AND WHO GOT STUCK AND HAD TO BE PUSHED OUT, E-MAIL ME, I THINK I'M IN LOVE! :) sorry, had to throw that in there.... 4.) The show was phenomenal - the best of the 6 or 7 that I have been to. nothing else I can say, still speechless. 5.) Kudos to Rudess and Morgenstein, who were both excellent.... 6.) Thanks to my drunk friend John, who made me wait for him in a side room while he got a girl's #. While I waited in the room, I see Derek and a shitload of 'Jammers with aftershow passes around. I was backstage without any passes, money, or anything (except my ACoS liners) 7.) HELLO to everyone that I had met at the show and beforehand : Trey, Fred, M. Bahr, Bafu, Paul, Buck (Mr. Serious) :P, Skadz, Digital, Brian Cox, Jay Peele, Jason Hartman , Elliot Kim, Hairball, and everyone else.. Damn there were so many of you!!!!!! Basically took a week and drove from Boston -> CT -> NY -> NJ -> CT -> Boston. Great shows with very diversified set lists (which was a surprise, as they usually play the same sets, ala the Japan shows!). All four shows SOLD OUT. Every club was packed to the hilt, and even oversold in terms of tickets. All in all, a killer set of shows. All four shows were bootlegged, so live tapes should be circulating soon. I'm very sorry that the only snag in my plans were that I missed the YtseCon II event!! 8^( I *really* wanted to meet some of y'all (Mike Bahr, Bafu, etc.). I am glad I ran into some of you in NJ -- Jay Peele (great tape!), Al Balkewicz, Brian Wherry, John Mastin, etc. Saw the Chew's from afar at the Malibu, and Mike Bahr from afar at Birch Hill -- hope to meet you more formally in the future. I just remember post after post condemming mine praising that lyric. But hey it belongs in the song and James know's it. Puppies on Acid-TTT was awesome, Scarred minus one lyrical flaw (can you guess it?) was amazing, Bad was cool, fuck the whole show was cool. I just needed Metropolis and I would have been set. Marc, patience will be one of the primary building blocks while you pursue drumming. When you first sat down with your bass; I'm sure you were not able to copy the bass riffs of Billy Sheehan or another "Bass god". Try not to get frustrated when beginning to play the drums; you are not going to duplicate Mike Portnoy. I have been playing drums for 15 years and I have seen MANY self-proclaimed "drummers" who could not think about playing a DT or Rush cover. The owner of the place and the tour manager came out yelling at each other a few times, from what I could gather (being near the front) the owner and the tour manager were fighting about the length of time for the soundcheck or something along those lines... I know at one point I heard from the tour manager "Right now I have an unhappy band, and if the band's not happy I'm not happy..." Well, once we got in DT played incredibly, albeit short, hilights were definitely ACOS, and voices, and Damage Inc (I was psyched to finally hear this!).. I think I could feel my feet by the time I left, though! good: ACOS, Voices, Damage Inc/medley, everything else they played! bad: the wait, the tall people who kept blocking my view! (Damn them! Damn them all!), the stupid 1am curfew on weeknights in CT, the sound (did anyone else think the sound wasn't that good this night? Dec 30th: Much less of a wait! We got in around 8:30, but then had to wait until 10:30 for DT to come on (at least it was warm!)... once they finally came on, they rocked! The sound was way better than the wed. show, it was cranked! They played Scarred! It had a cool instrumental intro thing that led into it too... too bad it got over at 12:30! The good: Everything they played completely rocked... the sound was loud *and* clear! (except for the couple times James' microphone dropped out on him - looked like he was getting mad too)... some cool DT fanatic named Chris that I met- another proud owner of the JPM100! Being like 5 feet from JP! (he's a god!.. they're all gods!) the bad: the wait (ok, I'm an impatient DT fan! :), the shitheads that were trying to cut in front of my JP gawking spot! the weird: the random kid who suddenly passed out behind us (and he was sober!), the blonde dude who decided he wanted to crowd surf using someone else as a ladder, and subsequently got dropped on his head... The funny: How whenever one of the band member takes a solo spot, the entire crowd suddenly stops and stares! Guess what I heard on the radio today? None other than "Innocence Faded." Actually, it was only part of it, and it was in the background during the Steve and D.C. morning show (no.1 in St. Louis!:), but the simple fact that I heard DT on the radio (especially around here) was cool enough. It was on this same show a few weeks ago that I heard Savatage's "Christmas Eve..." thing (that time, they even said who it was playing the song :). Evidently someone there must be into some good prog stuff. Too bad it doesn't "fit into the format" of the station (top 40 alternative/rap/pop/crap). Oh well, as long as they can get some of it on, that'll do for now, I guess. Hey, with all thgis talk about the shows and the Ytsecon thing, I say some of us in the midwest get together whenever DT comes around this region of the country next time. I know of plenty of fans here, and I would totally dig it if I could meet some of you all. Then I got a new Walkman, and new guitar parts were audible, as well as sound effects, stuff like that. Do some Walkmans just not pick up all the data? Or was I being deaf for 6 months? > Im guessing that the doubling was the choice of David Prater and >not James....his voice is too damn good to double....but Prater is >making a living so maybe he knows what hes doing.... Why have the same production through the whole album? Why not change from song to song? i.e.,(IMO) most of the songs on I&W would sound somewhat better with, for instance with the "live" drum sounds used on Awake, but IMOA, LtL really needs the-to quote someone (forgot who!)- "wrath of Zeus snare trigger". Why not have different production from song to song? YOu might say that it would be impossible to recreate live, but if I am correct, live doesn't sound the same as the album anyways. Ken rules !! 2) Dream Theater gushing: Dream Theater is the greatest !! What a great band they are to play a few dates over the holidays to their best fans. They really seemed tight in their performance after a layoff, too. 3) Dream Theater Member comment: James really stepped it up during this last mini tour. His vocals seemed to be on (even though they did get a bit lost in the mix) and he really showed some emotion and had a really cool stage presence. This lack of emotion had kind of dogged him in the past, but he was really into things last week. Here's hoping that this was sincere and that it continues. THANKS JAMES !!!!
