In some cases I would take this seriously, but the content of your statement instructs me that you haven't read the last few 'jams, because I haven't posted in days, and the last eight or nine 'jams don't have a single word from me. No, that other "Vai" person was not me, and no, I'm not Ben Laussade, and no, I'm not Mike Portnoy or Mike Bahr. I don't know why my name keeps appearing in every single 'jam, maybe there are actually fans out there, but still, I can't really control that and the fact that someone mentions me doesn't mean that I'm posting. It just means that someone is mentioning me. Next time, just ask for my opinion. I'll gladly give it to you. "Mr. Bafu Vai, would you rather I complain about your non-existant posts, or should I go out on a limb and post something myself along the lines of actual writing or something with an ounce of creativity?" To which I'll happily reply, "Look, if it weren't for all the creative writers, maybe these 'jams wouldn't come out every damn ten minutes. Creativity sucks. PLEASE keep your pointless complaints coming. Maybe it'll slow this shit down for a change. Message-ID: Hi! I'm a rather new subscriber and felt like posting my first message. First, I would like anyone with information on this "Acoustic Dreams" everyone has been talking about to e-mail some info on how to get it, preferably on CD, but a GOOD dub will do. Also, I've got my hands on a great little vid fro Japan. It's called "Dream Theater-Awake In Japan '95", and the sound and picture are EXCELLENT! It was taped off of a Japanese TV program called "Music Garden" on a channel (?) called WOWOW. It has backstage footage of the band before the show receiving the platinum awards for Awake, and the complete show, including the audience singing "Happy Birthday" to John Myung. For more info, please e-mail me. Another thing-did you read what was written about the cover tunes on ACOS in Request magazine? They said there was "an air of pointlessness hanging over the whole thing" and that "nostalgia is least effective when it sounds so passionless". These people don't know what they're talking about! If you want to send a thought or two on this, send it to email_address_removed. One more thing-How can I get any kinds of DT posters, stickers, or (especially) pictures I can download? ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 16 Nov 1995 15:22:20 -0500 From: email_address_removed To: email_address_removed Subject: YTSEJAM INTt. hats are here! Message-ID: Hey hey hey folks, get easy on King Crimson. I mean, I don't understand how one can appreciate (notice I didn't say just words like 'enjoy' or 'like') Dream Theater and not appreciate King Crimson. To my opinion, if there were no King Crimson, there would not have been Dream Theater, no Fates Warning, no, Crimson Glory, no E.L.P., no Yes, none of those great progressive rock bands. I mean, King Crimson was the father of this great progressive music. They're always looking for different ways to take the rock music to more artistic realm. They constantly challenge the listeners with their creative style both musically and technically. Since someone mentioned the question regarding 2 drummer business with King Crimson, let me give you a little insight I obtained from an article in a Roland Users' Magazine. Fripp decided to have 2 drummers because he came up with this idea dealing with polyrhythm. When there are 2 great drummers who can play independent rhythms you can come up with some great polyrhythmic ideas. Just look back in the music history. Guys like Charles Ives wrote pieces for a set of multiple orchestras! Yeah, it does take hell of a genious to come up with something that complicated to work out that well. I mean, the important thing is that even if you don't like what King Crimson was doing in Conan O'Brian show, you can still appreciate their creative carefully crafted art. Man! I wish I saw that on T.V.! I bet I would've loved it! After all, you know, it's King Crimson! I just think that the Eve version is SO much more horrrifyingly sad. Like Ben was doing before w/ the short stories, if I were to right a story about what this song made me think of, it would be about some horrible situation where a mother of three 9 year olds was raped, tortureed and murdered in front of them. It would be told by one of the daughters years later in a reflective manner of sorrow, sadness, greif, horror, regret, and dismay. This version just brings out SO much emotion in me. The TTT demo version, just doesn't do it as much. I leave the song thinking "what a pretty song" whereas with the othere version, I finish it crying... But I do agree that it is DT's most emotional song. ACOS does this too me also, but not quite as much. 4) I REALLY REALLY need a good picture or gif or replica of the Majesty logo! He fast forward a couple minutes, then let it go. Still nothing. A couple more minutes, and play again. He heard a faint moan. A cold sweat broke out over his body. He rewound a little and listened, hands gripping the steering wheel tightly, making his knuckles white. He didn't notice that, just listened. He heard quiet muttering and turned the volume all the way up. A faint hiss emanated from the cheap car speakers. Happening to glance in the rear view mirror, he saw the black car. It was the same driver as last time. Wearing a suit and tie, dark sunglasses, pitch black greasy hair slicked back as usual. His intense stare returned to the road. He put a little more pressure on the gas pedal and the distance between the two cars increased the slightest bit. "Turn right!" Came the voice, his voice, from the car stereo. That he did, onto a crowded road. The black car followed. The new road went straight for a while and then came to a t-junction. "Left", came the voice. Once again, he followed the instructions that he had given himself while dreaming. He had been recording his sleep for a while now. It started when he was very young and he set the recorder by his bed to see if he snored. Listening to himself sleep, the next day, he heard voices. Actually, one voice, which was his own. Ever since, he had made a habit of it. This street was just straight and empty. He was waiting anxiously for the voice to give him new directions when he saw the other black car pull out on to the street a few hundred feet in front of him. No turn offs, nothing. He had betrayed himself, why he did not know. He stepped out of the car and watched as the two men, one from each car, did the same. They walked toward him at an easy rate, for they knew he wasn't going anywhere. "Like a scream, but sort of silent, living off my nightmares..." came the voice from the tape. Followed by an uneasy laugh. "Everything is immaterial. Reality is immaterial. This is not reality." He was pondering that last line when the man hit him in the head. Blackness. * * * He woke in bed. The bed sat in a rubber room with one barred window. Actually, it couldn't really be called a bed, for all it was was a sheet and a pillow lying on the floor. Just another Sunday morning, he thought. Seeing no reason to stay Awake, and knowing what they wanted, he went to sleep again. When he woke for the third time that day, he was tied to a chair facing a mirror. He smiled, thinking that they should come up with something different for a change. "You know why you're here", came the voice over the speaker. "What, you think I forgot since last week?" was his reply. He knew why he was here. They wanted his dreams. They stole them from him. He and them had something in common. They both wanted to know what they meant. It had been going on for so long, he didn't even know why he still bothered to (try to) evade it. "Can you rid me of my secrets?" He asked. "Spare us. Tell us what you know." "I told you, I don't know any more than you do. Must we go through this every time?" "Now, that," came the disembodied voice," is what I was thinking." Then came the routine shots. They insisted on putting him to sleep, so they could take more of his dreams. * * * He was getting tired of waking up, but he had nothing better to do. He smiled faintly and welcomed the delirium that the shots brought. He glanced at the window. On the sill was a spider. He talked to it, but nothing came out of his mouth. He thought that was hilarous, in his intoxicated state, and let out a silent laugh. So he just thought to the spider. It didn't really matter. "So spider. Looks like we have something in common. We both wish we could speak." He threw his head back with soundless laughter. Conversing with the spider grew tiresome, so he spent the rest of his stupor kneeling on the floor and staring at the wall. As time passed, he slowly became more coherent and knew it was time to end all this. He went to the unlocked door to his room and opened it. Walking down the hall, he waved to the staff. They all waved back, including the men that had taken him here this time. He stepped out of the building onto his front lawn. He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out the keys to his front door. Once inside, he looked at his wife for a long time. "Love, just don't stare." "Okay," he said. * * * For the last time in this tale, he woke up in the rubber room. "What a cool dream," he said to no one. He smiled. vvvv vvvvvvvvvvvvv vvvv Ben Laussade vvvv v vvvv email_address_removed vv v v v v v vv v v v v v v v v v vv v vv v v vv v v v v v v v vv vvvv v v v vvvv vvvv vvvvvvvvvvvvv vvvv vvvvv "This is not reality" ------------------------------ End of YTSEJAM Digest 1137 **************************
