Jammers, Here is the next post on how all the songs on Awake fit into my idea that the album is a concept album thru and thru. This one is on Mirror. I am going out of order here, because I am getting some outside help on things that I do not know for Innocence Faded and some others. Remember, this is just my opinion and I am not wrong, though you may disagree. Feel free to respond to me personally or on the jam. Also, be sure to check out EVERON, and I am still waiting to hear from any classics majors with a degree or about to get one. So here goes. First a word from our sponsor: I am still anticipating the arrival of AD #273. It must be campus mail that moves slower than molases. Miror is the song where I got the idea from that the album is a concept album. I was listening one night and heard some samples in the middle of the song that I never really paid much attention to. Then I listened carefully to them to find out what is being said. Mirror is basically a song where our main character is sorting out, for himself, what is going on (for the 18,000th time). He has to evaluate himself, hence the title of the song. Also note that Mirror is very heavy and has lots of dissonance, implying a tense situation. Also, listen to the keys at Self Control and I spent so long. They are very spooky and mysterious. Mystery stories are all about trying to figure things out (hint hint). "Temptation- Why won't you leave me alone? Lurking every corner Everywhere I go Self Control- Don't turn your back on me now When I need you most." Here he is asking himself why he is so tempted all the time. He can't get away from the temptations of the siren. He must rely on himself no to go over the edge, but cant resist. This shows that he has very weak will power. "Constant pressure tests my will My will or my wont My self control escapes from me still..." Again, the siren and the "devil" side of his conscience (that little cartoon character on his shoulder) are constantly encouraging him to do what is wrong, and though he could say no, he won't. t 1:57 a male voice says, "What am I doing?" "Hypocrite- How could you be so cruel and expect my faith in return? Resistance- Is not as hard as it seems when you close the door." This is the man trying to figure things out from his wife's perspective. In other words, she is asking him these questions, even though he is really asking himself. She is telling him that if he says "see ya" to the siren, then there will be no problem. How could he be tempted if there is nothing to be tempted by. Bees don't look for honey in a bowl full of salt. "I spent so long trusting in you I trust you forgot (about her trust) Just when I thought I believed in you..." t 2:57 female voice says "what are you doing" This is still from the woman's perspective. Basically she says that she has loved him for so long (30 years..."says we're in this together"--Scarred) and then he goes and betrays her. "It's time for me to deal becoming all too Living in fear- Why did you lie and pretend? This has to come to an end I'll never trust you again It's time you made your amends Look in the mirror my friend." Here the woman (still the man talking to himself from her perspective) decides to take a serious look at things because she is figuring out what is going on. She has always feared that this would happen (he does not trust himself). And he has actually made her worst fear (actually his own worst fear) of betrayal come true. He does not trust himself Webster's (p44) defines Amend as "to grow or become better by reforming oneself" So he is telling himself that he needs to become a better person. He needs to become a G-d fearing man, or one with morals. t 3:23 m"I haven't behaved as I should've" f "Everything you need is around you. The only danger is inside you." m"If only you could control it. But it's not like that. There are things you can't control." "Let's stare the problem right in the eye It's plagued me from coast to coast" He is saying that it is time to face reality. Hmm, where have we heard this before? he can't escape no matter where he goes and how hard he tries. "Racing the clock to please everyone All but the one who matters the most" It is like he goes to work, goes to his siren, rushes home, all in a race against time. ALSO, he is racing to figure out some sort of solution before everything collapses on him, which it is doing. He is trying to please everyone except himself. "Reflections of reality Are slowly coming into view" He is finally begining to realize what is going on. Again. "How in the hell could you possibly forgive me? After all the hell I put you through" He realizes that she could never forgive him for everything that he has done to her by betraying her. Also, he cant forgive himself for what he has done. "It's time for me to deal Becoming all to real living in fear- Why'd I betray my friend? Lying until the end Living life so pretend It's time to make my amends I'll never hurt you again" This is what he is actually saying to himself when he realizes what he has done: his mistakes and what needs to be done to repair the situation if that is possible. However, can he really be believed with such weak will power and such ease of betrayal? t 6:00-6:16 Here it sounds like the guitar is screaming in pain (imitating what the man would sound like) and then it sounds as if he is yelling at himself. 6:36-45 The guitar sounds like it is holding a conversation with itself. Also throughout these time frames, the guitar has a conversation with the keys-imitative of the man and woman having a conversation. So there you have it on Mirror. Lie will be next, and yes that is ther truth. Anyhow, happy reading. No, I am not sorry for making this a long post. I think that for once it will be something on the jam that is worth reading. Unlike, "woohoo. I got AD and my ytse shirt today in the mail. see you on Dec 29." To the fucking idiot (bafu), what do you think? As I round a corner of the racks, I hear a familiar sound over the PA. The acoustic intro to ACOS! Sure enuogh, they played the whole damn thing. I was suprised to hear DT played publically here in Mo'town, since we're not exactly on the cutting edge. Anyway, when I went to pay for my CD, I mentioned to the guy begind the counter what a great tune they were playing. He said "Yeah, Dream Theater, pretty good, huh?" Then he asked me if I bought the album yet, and when I told him I had, asked about WDADU. This guy honestly knew what he was talking about!
