Skip this if you want more time to think. Answers I know are right: Primus, R.E.M., E.L.P., King's X, U2 Answers that were submitted that I know are wrong: Rush (Rutsey/Peart), Pink Floyd (Barrett, Waters both left) Answers I can't confirm since I never heard of them, or I don't have all their stuff: Pendragon, Queensryche, Ministry, Swamp Terrorists, Sugar (Do they really have 5 albums out?), Nine Inch Nails, Big Country, Phish (Not sure on # of albums, but I think it's 5) Answers I've been told are wrong: Aerosmith (Someone told me that one or two albums were recorded w/o Joe Perry. Not sure about that one.) Answers that sorta count, because they have new stuff coming out soon: Queen, The Beatles, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble I hope I didn't miss any. If anyone can confirm the doubtful ones for me, please do! But enough of this moaning, it's time for my first contribution to the Jam for this week. Last night I went to see Joe Satriani in Neu Isenburg. I basically went because of all the coverage he has been given here in the Jam. My overall impression was that I was disappointed. OK, the guy can play guitar, but nothing really seemed to come across, there was no atmosphere somehow. Perhaps if I had known some of his stuff before I went, perhaps it was just me. Oh, well. In the Jam 1124, the Digital Man asked about bands with unchanged line-ups, that have made at least 5 albums and who still tour: I know one!! How about the amazing BLIND GUARDIAN. Five studio albums, one live album (well known to our Japanese Jammers I expect) and the same four guys making the music. Do I win anything? For the information of the Kraut Jammers (seid gegruesst), Blind Guardian will be doing a mini-tour of Germany in December, supported by Love Hate, Saxon, Yngwie Malmstein (!), and there are very strong rumours that Gamma Ray will be coming along for the ride too. So far I only know of two dates (Aschaffenburg 15/12 and Mannheim 17/12), but there are sure to be more. Check out the next edition of Metal Hammer. Turning my attention now to those of you who liked Ben's visual music: what is this: YEEAARRGGHH BOOM BOOM SPLASH AHH easy huh? It was, of course Mike Portnoy taking a dump after eating a Bombay Vindaloo. Religion next. If people want to believe in a particular god or set of gods or idols or stones or what ever, fine by me. What I do object to, however, is people telling me stuff like '...God and Jesus Christ to whom we will all answer one day...'. It's not my god, not my JC, and I won't have to answer to anybody when I turn my toes up. That's the big problem with monotheism: the faithful tend to speak for everybody instead of just themselves. OK, just time for a quick joke before I have to see my boss and the solids hit the air conditioner: Q: what is 100 feet long, has no pubic hair and screams? A: the front row at a Take That concert. Keep those favourite DT covers coming: it could make a pretty interesting CD. stay safe and happy listening Neil Gallop (nga@software-ag.de) Currently playing: Bruce Dickinson - Live In Studio A ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Nov 1995 09:51:58 -0500 (EST) From: email_address_removed (Barb Battaglia) To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: YTSEJAM digest 1124 Message-ID: Hello everyone, it's BABS. I just went through this crap with my band. We were called Effigy, but it turns out that there is a New Jersey band with the same name. They are "Effigy inc."and their name is there corporate trademark. This process costs roughly $400 and you must pay taxes on all corporate earnings (ie-what your band gets paid for shows) afterwards. We decided that no name was worth that much (at least until we have more $$$) We are now called (***WARNING***Shameless Plug Ahead) EM-50 and can be found on the web at http://pages.nyu.edu/~dlg3441/ That's EM-50: For all your industrial metal needs. I got a chance to meet Portnoy and Labrie last night, up in Toronto. I went with Paul Holloway and a friend in my class, Marcus Silva. Portnoy was playing a drum clinic called Drum Masters. He played with four other people (Steve Smith from Journey.... what a wicked player! Dom Famularo (sp?)... he was wicked. He did things I didn't know could be done on drums - very artistic) and these two guys Brad Shutz? (?) and this guy who looks like Steve Anthony, the former Much Music VJ. Anyways, it was held at Earl Haig high school... and it was late because the stage crew had to wait for some audition to finish. Anyways they started late. Pornoy was just amazing. He explained how he writes. For example: "If we have 16 beats....we try to make something creative instead of 4x4. we'll use 5,5,3, and 3, or 7, 5, and 4...." He said it goes back to arithmetic and math. He also demostrated and explained his double bass method. Double bassing triplets (if you have 6 beats, you don't have to think of it as two sets of triplets, think of it as three sets of [duples] so you start the kick on your right foot.... I don't want to write too much, but after the show, LaBrie happened to be there!! We got his autographs and pictures with him. Paul asked about DT and Fates. He actually hasn't kept up with them since their tour. We kinda asked him about ACoS, about the old lyrics... so we'll be singing "Please don't go... please don't go..." next time they come along!! Mike was cool, too, asked me if I had AD.... :(, I don't. BTW: He thinks AD was really good!! Now all I need is a dub site.... here in Canada. Paul gave him the last couple YtseJams, so he'll be read up. Anyhow, I'm surprised I didn't hear more about this Drum Masters thing on the YtseJam... I just got called by Paul a week ago, and I said, "Ya! let's go!" Anyways, Jim M of FW is wrapping up his composing and I hear he'll be done by next week.. Ahh.... HA!! Sorry to laugh at your difficulty, but that "joined me in the front seat" image made me chortle aloud! Let's see. When I saw DT at the Moore Theater here in Seattle, during John's Petrucci's guitar solo, the keyboards did something pretty neat. I should point out that the sound quality of the show was excellent, and unusually bassy. So anyway, John was up there shredding away, when Derek hit a note that was SO LOW and SO BASSY that my vision BLURRED. For about four seconds I couldn't see anything. There was a hazy figure up on stage soloing, and there was a big grey mass of people all around me, but otherwise my world was covered in a momentary fog. You know how sometimes the kickdrum makes your chest cavity vibrate? My entire skull felt like that for about four seconds while Petrucci turned into a mirage. Then Derek went back to normal notes and I was able to focus my eyes, as well as my mind. Luckily, the event had no damaging effects on my thinking...
