You said the keys play a flat seven with respect to the key signature. OK, now here's my question: is the flat 2 on the guitar a half step up from the tonic, or from the relative minor? Because the flat seventh with respect to the key signature (e.g.- key of C -- b7 is Bb) is the same as a flat 2 from the relative minor (e.g.- key of C=key of Am -- b2 is Bb!!)!! Message-ID: <message_id_removed> HELLO!!! Acoustic Dreams is absoulutely awesome. I feel sorry for those of you that missed out on ordering this wicked CD! I have now listened to each track and love it. And yes, it is much better producing than WDADU, as some people have pointed out. 1. Another Day I love this rendition of one of my already favorite Dream Theater songs. The little Acoustic twist really adds some serious emotion to this track which is present, yet not so obvious in the Images and Words version. I love the way that they (Dream Theater) were able to translate this very musical and full-sounding piece to an acoustic track, and maintain the fullnss necessary for this song's sound. Teriffic Job!!!!! 2. Lifting Shadows off a Dream WOW! That's all I have to say (not really, but it sounds cool)!! I liked the Awake version, and from the beginning was one of my favorite songs on the album. The Acoustic transition is brilliantly played and is seducing in sound. I can't say which version is my favorite, but I'm beginning to fall in love with this version of the song. Another great one :) 3. Waiting for Sleep I must admit to liking the album version a little bit better, merely because the unique sound of the piano is really needed here. The guitar cannot carry a sustained sound like the piano because the same string has to be used for the next note, which is really evident in the beginning. A really good job, though!! I definitely give it a 9.5!!! 4. The Silent Man Almost exactly like the Awake version, and just as much emotion as the album version. It sounds a little purer and untouched and unedited than the Awake version. I like the sound. It's really good quality and worth a second listen, if not a third or fourth, or hundredth :) 5. Long Island Expressway Is this an original Dream Theater song? It seems to have some qualities of Dream Theater's work, but sounds like it is probably a cover. I'm not quite sure where that guitar sound comes from, but it sounds pretty Spanish in origin. I like it. It adds a new dimension of sound to their palette. It's cool. 6. Tears I've always loved this song when performed by Rush on 2112. This is a great song, and always screamed out to be covered by Dream Theater with someone with a voice like LaBrie. Granted, Geddy Lee's voice is great, but James sure gives it a challenge. The sound quality of this recording is superior to Rush's 2112, but probably because 2112 was recorded in 1976! I really like this song! Another teriffic song :) 7. O Holy Night Puts me into the Christmas spirit :) like nothing else. James hits every note so perfectly and beautifully. I wish I had a voice like his. This song is played so beautifully it brings a tear to the eye ;) Definite a permanent fixture in my CD player around Christmas time from now on. I love this performance. 8. Perfect Strangers Hey, don't I already own this song!? Didn't Dream Theater already release this song as a cover!? Wait a minute, that isn't James LaBrie!? Oh, it's Bruce Dickinson. He sings very well also, IMHO, and does a great job on this song. Of course, he should, he sanf it in the original recording. nust say I like both versions the same. Exactly the same. Good sound quality, sounds exactly like the quality on ACoS!! I'm serious! 9. Six O'Clock (6:00) This version here has a nice, yet different mix that the Awake version. It sounds to me like the guitars were definitely brought out more in this version. And listen to that bass! WOW!!! IT really shines in this recording! Listen to Myung go! Also, you can get a better listen on what Petrucci is doing with his guitar. All-in-all, an absolutely teriffic mix. Good job Mike! 10. Caught in a Web Used to be one of my favorite songs on Awake, but that has changed. Maybe this version will help to interest me again. Once again, the guitars are more brought out and are very powerful sounding in the forefront. The verse "Caught in a Weeeeeeb!" catches my attention more than the Awake version. James's voice sounds purer and less hoarse that when he absolutely yells out notes and phrases. I like his voice when it's in that purer mode better that when it's in concert mode, but what I would give to see them in concert. Rock on!!! Good version!! 11. Voices Kind of dissapointed with this one, but am not surprised. I wish that more (alot more) of the song was on it. I happen to like this song's changing moods and find it to be an Epic of a song. Only a minute doesn't supress my hunger, but I'll live. Somebody tell those people next to the recorder to shut their traps!!! Man, there's nothing I hate more than inconsiderate people. Well, what little there was was good. BTW, what is that scratching sound in the middle of the song? Was it speaker trouble? 12. Bad Pretty good, although sound quality leaves something to be desired. Good choice on Mr. Bahr's part to leave Bad and Voices as Bonus Tracks. Still, this song is pretty good. I don't know the original version and can't comment on comparison, but I like this song now. Good job, Dream Theater :) I'll bet that you all are tired or reading this, or maybe some of you want to hear more, but it's over. Sorry for going on so long, but I felt that I needed to write it. Mine was # 309 for those of you eagerly awaiting your copy as I was. If you have it, isn't it teriffic! If you are waiting on it, it's WORTH THE WAIT!!! If you didn't order it, I advise you to get with someone doing dubs and do it now! You'll regret it if you don't. Thanks a whole lot, Mike Bahr, if you're reading this!!! Sorry dude, on that playing field, you play alone. Now, I know that there's been alot of crap going on about people talking about other bands and their works and some guys getting anal retentive and thinking that we should stick to *only DT*. Well, screw that! I was looking at a couple of the sample digests in Ed Polzin's WWW page and on a couple of them it was nothing *but* stuff about other bands. Really, what do you think that kept this list going in the beginning. There wasn't enough stuff by DT to keep conversation all the time. Also, some of us, if not most of us, like to hear about other bands on the list and what makes people like them, even if it has minimal relation to DT. And to "DAVEGOD", you contradictory sack! If in one issue you write at the end of your message, "Let's keep it to DT stuff (paraphrase)", you can't write your entire next message as "The new Alice and Chains comes out tomorrow, **** yeah!" and then bitch about others posting about other bands on the list. O.K. That's enough of my preaching, and I know that "DAVEGOD" has heard his earful lately. Now, I'm goiong to speak about A&C for a sec. To David: It's awesome and worth the money. It's harder than Dirt, but still has some softer tracks reminiscent of those on Jar of Flies. It's a good mix and a good buy. If you can afford it and want it, get it. Also, about Awake resembling Rush's hemisphere's, I thought of that the first few months htat I heard it. Especially the song Hemisphere vs. AMBI. Starts off with an instrumental. Hemispheres is about broken spirits in man, whereas AMBI talks just about a mans MIND being torn. Then the last part of both songs...accoustic songs, both about a sort of serenity, and peacefulness. When was the last time a 90-degree t-square felt good in YOUR back? > I can think of a lot more important things to hate, such as injustice, > child abuse, the Slavic civil war, and deaths caused by drunk drivers. You forgot about those people that stick javelins in Halloween candy. They suck! There you are thinking about what a nice, strangely-gigantic tootsie roll you just received, only to find out the bastard put a fucking SPEAR in it! I HATE that! Damn disgruntled Olympics-losers... Taking it out on the children... Ahhh, it's good to be done with those crazy stories. I can finally go back to being my normal old self... Concerning the Japanese release of Awake that some places are still advertising as "contains a bonus CD", don't buy it. The bonus CD is a 3" mini CD for which you need an adaptor ring to play in any standard American (I know none of them are American, but in the U.S. standard is 5" CD) CD player. The bonus CD only contains one song: EVE (studio version). I understand that this in itself is a novelty, but it's not worth paying $40-45 for just this extra song, and an album you already have (Awake). The reason it's not worth it is because EVE has become available on the Silent Man single, which is easier to find, much cheaper, and contains the demo version of Take the Time. It's readily available in Europe (especially Germany), and is pretty frequently spotted in the U.S. in import sections. Plus, this single should only cost you $15 tops, and again contains TTT demo, which is cool. So don't waste your time looking for or purchasing the Japanese version of Awake. I have both just because I got the Japanese release w/ EVE the day it was released in Japan through Kaoru (thanks again), and this was obviously before The Silent Man single was released. Then I got the SM single through a friend in Germany. I thought about dishing off the Japanese release to make back a portion of the $35 I spent to get it, but I figured I'd just keep it for the novelty. If anyone can't afford or can't find the Silent Man single, contact me for a dubbing of it.
