I'm in Geneseo and we are about a half-hour ride south of Rochester. I get labeled as being in the Southern Tier of NY, but I think that Geneseo is more westernly (is that a word?) located. Graham Borland - I appreciate your sense of humor :) I feel that Ytsejam crop-tops or tank tops for the ladies is a legitimate request. Now as for having a line of boxers (cute idea though) and condoms hmm? That may be pushing it a little to far. As I joked with a Ytse friend the other day, I just can't fathom a Majesty symbol on a condom. BTW, my mother's family is Scots-German and they were at one time kicked out of Scotland and landed in Canada - just what goes on over there? Trey Allen - you inquired as to who headed up the YTSE Convention last spring, 'twas me. Let me know if you need any advice on how to "round-up" jammers for the December shows. Did they get a lawsuit thrown on their door or what? Well, as it was told to me, authorities are cracking down on bootlegs en masse on all sides of all ponds. Their manufacture is now finally illegal in Italy and bootleg producers are trying to regroup elsewhere (supposedly in Australia and South Africa ??). On our shorelines (and especially on the east coast), US authorities are making more intense raids of shipments and, more importantly, are targeting retail outlets. Additionally, I heard that in the US it is/will soon become a felony instead of a misdemeanor to be involved in the trafficking of bootlegs. On the plus side of this mess, if you can find a retailer who still has merchandise, they are typically selling their stock for 1/2 price. On the obvious down side, bootlegs will be much harder to come by in the future. Wonder what Mr. Bahr's take is on this hostile atmosphere ???? Was wondering if any of you would like to get together while I am over there as I am always looking for some fellow DT fanatics to spend some time with. Basically, I will be upgrading software on a bunch of government computer systems located at Air Force bases located in Europe and will end up with some free time on my hands. Now I don't want to spend that free time just sitting in a hotel room and that's, I hope, where you come in. I'm just looking for some people to show me around the area and point me in the direction of some good clubs/bars and maybe joining me in the partaking of a few beverages. As it is right now, my tentative schedule will have me arriving in the United Kingdom January 3, 1996. The base is supposed to be located 30 miles north of Cambridge. I have never been here so I'm not really sure exactly where the base is. Maybe some British jammer's can help me. The base is called RAF Mildenhall. Anyway, I will be here until Jan. 15. Would love to get together with as many of you as possible. From there I will be heading to Kaiserslautern, Germany on or about the 16th. I have already talked to Bernd about this so any other German jammers that want to get together, let me know. Maybe we can all get together and go see Bernd's band Superior! Will be in Kaiserslautern until the 23rd and then go up to Frankfurt until the end of the month. As I said earlier, would love to meet as many of you as possible. What is all this "I'm cooler than you" crap? I don't remember anyone saying anything like that; perhaps some people are proud of the fact that they have broad and diverse listening ranges--well God forbid! I must say that the comparisons to DT are not really apt. Masquerade is really not very progressive. Those of you who enjoy Dio-era Sabbath and that style of music would probably like it, though. I don't think it's bad, just not very original and certainly not much like DT. If anyone out there is interested in buying it from me, I'll sell it for what I got it for ($5) plus postage. It is a full length CD with twelve tracks in a cardboard sleeve. The sound quality is good and as it is only a promo release, is kind of hard to find. On another note, I have found in my local area a store where DT is recognized for the musical pioneers that they are. I saw two DT bootlegs which I recognized from the bootleg discography and bought two DT Tshirts, one from Awake and one from Images and Words. I also talked to the guy who was working there about a Japanese import version of Awake which he just sold which had 4 extra tracks. When I walked in, Living Colour's Stain was on the stereo and he said he had just finished playing I&W. If anyone lives in the East Lansing area or is interested in the bootlegs that I can get (he also had access to other DT boots and boots by many other bands), just let me know and I'll drop in and see what I can do. I hear as well other prog-metal bands such as Fates Warning,Queensryche but i would like to recomment an excellent LP from a great band which is Heir Apparent.Their first album ("Graceful Inheritance") was more a power metal LP but it's a classic of this kind.Their second and last so far alboum (1989) "One Small Voice" is surprisingly different. They got a better singer (Steve Benito) and a perfect keyboardist (Micheal Jackson!) and changed their style into progressive metal. The result is one of the best prog-metal alboums of all times(in my opinion it is the same style as "Rage For Order") and it also includes a fantastic version of "Sound Of Silence"(Paul Simon). If anyone has heard it i would like his opinion(if not in the list mail me personal).. Someone in a previous Diggest asked for information about Savatage.Their last ("Dead Winter Dead") is a concept that i think Dream Theater fans would like. In two songs ("I AM" and "It doesn't matter anyway") the lead vocals are from Jon Oliva their previous and original singer."Streets" (1991) is a rock opera and it's better than "Dead Winter Dead" but their best alboum is "Gutter Ballet" (1989 i think).Check out also "Edge of Thorns"(1993) and "Handfull of Rain" (1994) that are really great .Their firsts alboums are power metal alboums with "Dungeons Are Calling" and "Hall of The Mountain King" being two of the best power metal records of all times.Savatage isn't really a progressive metal band but it's a group that all DT fans would love. The main problem of metal fans here in Greece is that big groups such as Queensryche or Dream Theater don't come to see them live even though they have many fans. The last great group i saw live was Iron Maiden a month ago but i dont think there will be another big concert this year(unless Paradise Lost comes to Greece). That's all folks - sorry for the no DT related mail and for not using the English language very good.By the way ACoS rules! But I assume that a lot of us also read the Jam because we want to find out other things that are (possibly) related to DT and their music, i.e. music tips about other bands, concert reports, funny stuff, and so on. Why am I writing this? Simple: there have been quite a few postings recently saying "I only want DT content and nothing else". Not much of a theme really, once you've read the FAQ and asked one or two questions about lyrics/tabs/tours. Can anybody honestly expect us to limit ourselves to just this? What sort of threads would we have: - what underpants was Mike Portnoy wearing when he did the overdubs for ACoS? - what does John Petrucci's cat like to eat for lunch? - my 5 favourite ways of spelling Myung? - how to imitate DT's light show with a candle, a mirror and a piece of coloured glass? I think you get the picture. On to other things. I'm getting worried: two whole Jams (1111 and 1112) without a posting from Ben Laussade. Has his dad grounded him? Is he being kept prisoner in the IRC chat room by enraged Nirvana and Hole fans? J. Ambrose wrote "Helmet is a good band, but they are old hat...". This gets my vote for the best pun (intentional or otherwise) that I've seen on the Jam so far. Saying stuff sucks, sucks (so this sentence sucks). What I mean to say is that I think saying stuff sucks, sucks (which doesn't suck). All clear so far? So please, in future, if you want to say that stuff sucks, then clearly state that you personally think this, and don't make a general statement that includes everybody else on the Jam (which would suck, wouldn't it?). To misquote Rene Descartes 'I suck, therefore I am' (or was it Butt-Head?). Well, I think that's about all for today. I >have met many American Indians and I have yet to find one that talks in the >broken english that the one in the story did. In fact, most of them speak >better english than many "whites" that I know. What's next, humorous stories >about the holocaust? 1.) I'm not defending racisim or biggotry . 2.) I've made statements that were misconstrued as racist/biggoted on the jam and it's because you can only read the words and not the emotional sense it was written in. 3.) Don't be so quick to judge the writer or sensitive to the written word on the jam. I would venture to say very few of us are professional writers and don't take much time to "color" our words for an emotional effect. I'm new to this whole "jamming" thang, and I haven't anything really interesting to trade, but I hope we could work something out. Mail me and we'll put something together. It sounds like I'm missing a great DT performance. email_address_removed. Peter ------------------------------ End of YTSEJAM Digest 1115 **************************
