Like I said a few jams ago, Shadow Gallery is/are damn good, and I do love keys/synth, but they tend to get overblown. I think you can find a happy medium with keys and guitars together, but I prefer a heavier mix and Shadow Gallery tends to favor the synth sound. Mike Baker is an awesome singer - and the melodies are excellent too. But you can go overboard. If they kept the melodies and keys to a minimum - well, maybe not a minimum but I think they are overused. Maybe they could have solved that problem by getting an outside producer. Lyrically, they are good but I much prefer DT here. Shadow Gallery leans toward a more "fantasy" bent lyrically I think. I don't think you can compare Shadow Gallery to DT to any great extent; almost like comparing DT to NiN which just isn't a good comparison at all. If you are looking for the Shadow Gallery disc, try CDNow on the WWW. I got it in 5 days. But be warned - those who like the heavier DT songs probably won't get into this. I think the heaviest Shadow Gallery song is probably along Innocence Faded lines... Chris email_address_removed ------------------------------ Date: 31 Oct 1995 08:52:08 GMT From: "Steven Johnson, P" To: email_address_removed Subject: (U)Extreme's references Message-ID: Parth asked about Extreme going to extremes. III SIDES asked if God (god) was dead, "who care's", etc. It's almost a mournful cry for the inexistence of God (god). On WFTP they take the "There is no god" stance. Why the change? They've always been pretty blatant about God's (god's) existence and who is in control of anyone's life. On their first disc, "Watching, waiting" talks about the crucifixion; all of II is about a child's exerience in the world on his own. So it's nothing new to them, I just think they happen to get much more direct on this latest release. I think it's interesting how Extreme and DT seem to be on most Jammers' lists of favs (of course, DT). We put so much into lyric meanings and there are a number of Jammers who aren't really pumped about talk of Christianity. Yet, as Extreme is a fav on the list, they are very blatant in their religious topics, much more so than DT. True Extreme's lyrics from their previous woks were very Christian in nature (esp. III Sides) seeing as both Gary and Nuno have stated that they are born-again Christians. I don't see how you see WftP as "anti-Christian" though. Extreme has always had sarcastic lyrics...check "Money," "Warheads," "Peacemaker Die," etc, etc, etc... There is that line in "There Is No God": "A fool that says there is no God, don't feel for that sorry sod who needs proof if he'll believe..." plus "So *you* say there is no God..." Extreme never states "I/we say there is no God." Gary pulls some of his lyrics for this song out of the Psalms (10 & 14 esp.) dealing with people who say that there is no God. And with "Evilangelist"...they are just showing their frustration with false teachers (of which there is an abundance of). I don't see this as anti-Christian... WftP is still very much so Christian in nature, but a darker lyrical side. There are lines in almost *every* song that Gary draws from the Bible or biblical principles... Jam: It involves multiple steps - each separate, yet strangely connected by one common thread - Flaming. Ytse: What do you want me to do to help, Jam? Jam: First, post a controversial message flaming another band about how much they suck compared to DT. Mask your vitriol with a thin layer of logic and intelligence. Ytse: But, won't they see through to my real stupidity, Jam? Jam: No, Ytse. They're mostly young college students. Some of them actually think their professor's are intelligent. You should have no problem fooling them. Ytse: But, how do I do it, Jam? Jam: Simple, quote very reliable sources such as Ayn Rand or the Bible. I DON'T CARE ABOUT IT. Thanks. Jam: Ytse, are you pondering what I'm pondering? Ytse: Uh, I think so, Jam; but this time, you flame Frank. Jam: Frank, you weasel. Turn off CAPS LOCK. Don't you know anything about the Internet. You'd think you were on AOL or something. Ytse: Well, I don't want to start a religious discussion or anything, but I think Frank's anger would be resolved if he accepted Jesus into his heart. List: I subscribed to this list to hear about DT. I'm going to take my computer and go home. List: Dear DT. I love your music. Please add me to your mailing list. AOL: Me too. List: Can't we do anything to keep all the idiots off this list. List: I'm tired of all these idiotic messages from idiots. List: I'm tired of being an idiot. List: How do I pronounce YTSEJAM? Either they broke up or he died or they broke up and then he died. There are other parts in the lyrics that seem to fit in there: "..and ashes can't answer her pain" - has he been cremated? "..and call life from a cold metal frame" - a picture of him standing on the shelf by the bed? Well, these are just the thoughts and feelings that come to me everytime I hear that song. It really touches me everytime I hear it, think I know these feelings all to well... And even if it sounds pathetic, at times when I sing along WfS, I change the lyrics with reference to a male protagonist, so I can even relate more to the song. Anyway, since someone brought it up, I thought I would finally add my input: I found this quote from Atlas Shrugged several years back. It's on page 225 of the 35th anniversary hardback addition. The whole quote is He had no time for pain, no energy for anger. Within a few weeks, it was over; the blinding stabs of hatred ceased and did not return. He was back in confident self-control on the evening when... This is way to close to LtL to be coincidental. Notice "the blinding stabs of hatred ceased..." == "the sightlessness of hatred slips away" as well as the references to "confidence and self-control". I love that! Just thought I'd point it out. Message-ID: When I think of "signature song", I tend to think of something that encapsulates best their style, and will give people are global, yet bite-size, impression of the band. For Example, with Queen, I would say that Bohemian Rhapsody is their signature, and not cos of Wayne's World! :) :) But rather, because of the fact that it shows them at their best in the different styles they played in. For a band like Styx, I would choose Lady, or maybe the Best of Times, since Styx are often more known for their ballads. I don't think a song should be called a band's "signature" song since it's the only one the general public is familiar with, although oftentimes that is the case. I'm relatively new to DT, and only possess I&W and ACoS, but I would call Take The Time more of a signature, cos it has their fast-paced rock, combined with their smoothly executed rhythmic changes, and skillful technical playing, all wrapped in a eight minute (approx, no flames for not being exact on the time, please ! :) ) time slice, which allows anyone who would listen to a larger scale work, such as ACoS or Metropolis, to say "Hey, that's Dream Theater!" Just like, when someone hears a very clean, yet virtuosic, harmonica solo, they can instantly say "Hey, that's Blues Traveller". Hopefully I illustrated well enough what I think a signature song should be. But of course, just my opinion. I think this is a great discussion topic, to be sure!
