Some of you may have already heard of this or be helping, but for those of you that haven't, please read this message and do whatever you can to help us out. The basic goal of Operation:Revolution is to protest the current programming practices of MTV (or eMpTyV as some like to call it). I'm sure most people can remember when rock, metal, and progressive rock/metal bands got airtime on MTV. Back when Queensryche released their Empire album, several songs of that album got wide recognition on MTV (Empire, Silent Lucidity, etc.). In contrast, how many times has each of you seen videos for I Am I, Bridge, Disconnected, etc. off the new Queensryche album? Not very many I'm afraid. This is not limited to Queensryche supporters only, although it began on the Queensryche group on Usenet. The example above is just that: an example. The same thing holds true for other bands. How many of you have seen Dream Theater videos on MTV? I think personally I saw Pull Me Under once and Lie twice. These bands deserve more recognition than that. Operation:Revolution intends to send MTV a message that fans of rock and metal are still here and we won't be silent any more. Our basic requests to MTV are these: 1. More videos and less shows. After all, MTV originally stood for Music Tele Vision. Cartoons and game shows don't seem to have very much to do with music. 2. More coverage for rock/metal bands. Specifically, more diversity among the videos they play. A lot of the songs they play I happen to like quite a bit (Live, Bush, Candlebox, Alanis Morissette, etc.), but I'd rather see some of the other deserving bands get their fair share. 3. Return of Headbanger's Ball or similar show. Maybe start a new show similar to Headbanger's Ball, but lean a bit more towards progressive rock/metal than always playing just death metal. Operation:Revolution is being carried out in three main ways: 1. Snail-mail campaign. Write MTV and let them know what you think. Recommend bands to them that you'd like to see get more coverage. Tell them if you don't like the proportion of game shows and cartoons as compared to videos and music-oriented programming. One address for this is: ------------------------ MTV's Afternoon 1515 Broadway 23rd FLr. New York, NY (I missed the zip code today, but just watch for a while yourself and you can get an address to send to.) 2. E-mail campaign. On the day of Halloween we are asking for all supporters of our goals to write an e-mail message to MTV voicing their support. It doesn't have to be fancy, but the point is to show how much interest there is out here. Try to be literate, intelligent, and non-vulgar. Our cause will see much better results if we can fill their mailbox with a large amount of intelligent mail, rather than if one guy sends hundreds of messages saying 'You suck' in the most interesting and vulgar ways he can think of. Please send *one* message to any *one* of these three addresses on *Halloween Day*. email_address_removed *or* email_address_removed *or* email_address_removed Please send only one message to only one of these addresses on the day of Halloween. And *please*, no vulgarity. We are trying to keep this movement on an intelligent level. 3. Most Wanted campaign. On the day of Halloween, we intend to gather as many supporters as possible and call up MTV's Most Wanted with votes for a song to be chosen. Currently, the song being favored is Anybody Listening? by Queens- ryche from the Empire album. We think if this song can be voted #1 on Most Wanted it will send a powerful message to MTV and to it's viewers. This facet of Operation:Revolution was only currently started, so I don't have the 800 number yet and we have yet to choose the song to vote for. As soon as this information is determined, I'll post it to here. The important thing for the Most Wanted campaign is to support it no matter what song is chosen. We can't possibly pick a song that will please everyone, but we will try to pick the best representative song that will get our message across. Currently Anybody Listening is at the top of our list for a few reasons: great song, theme goes along with our movement, age of song helps make it stand out, never was very popular (makes it stand out more), and the roots of this movement were started by several Queensryche fans. The point is to pick a song that will stand out like a sore thumb and make people stop and take notice of us. Now, on to the important stuff... what can *you* do to help? If you wish to get involved in the organization of this thing, please e-mail Mick at email_address_removed. You can e-mail me (email_address_removed) if you'd like, but Mick is the guy that knows what's going on and is really the founder of this. We still need lots of help getting this thing off the ground properly. Areas to be tackled: AOL, Compuserve, Delphi, Usenet, mailing lists, radio stations, etc. If you don't wish to get involved on a large scale, we can still use your help getting this message out. E-mail all your rock/metal fan friends and let them know what's going on...forward them this message if you want. Tell anyone you think might be interested. Get the word out on the streets. And most importantly: CALL AND WRITE MTV! It only takes a few minutes of time to write MTV a letter on Halloween or to call in a couple times to Most Wanted. We aren't asking much of your time to do this, just a few minutes to write an e-mail and to make a few phone calls. If you want to help with the organization more time is involved, but the possibilities if this thing goes well are endless...more airtime for the kind of music we like, more promotion of the bands you want to hear, more new music being released, etc. I apologize for the length of this letter, but we feel this is a vital and important message to spread if we are to be successful. Thanks... To signify the group where this benevolent movement started, (and for simplicity's sake), we have decided to call in to MTV en-masse and request one song: Queensryche's "Anybody Listening?" This song was selected to send a message to eMpTyV. This song was selected because it isn't too new (and trendy), isn't too old (and overplayed), and it has a specific message. And again, in requesting this song, we honor the newsgroup where this grand movement started. ** When: Call in on Halloween Day, starting around 5:30-6PM, Eastern Time** *** the PHONE NUMBER: 1-800-DIAL-MTV *** ** The song to request: Queensryche's "Anybody Listening?" ** This call-in is NOT a replacement for the originally planned write-in. It IS a significant part of a one-two-punch combination. Feel free to call in everyday for the remainder of the week, too. But remember to CALL IN ON HALLOWEEN DAY! **** Remember to write in on Halloween day!!! **** We WILL make a difference! email_address_removed (Mathew W. When I first bought it, the first thing I thought was "What does that mean, is it relevent to the meaning of the song?" I have concocted one possible meaning to this bizarre song. Number One: It could be symbolizing a shattered life. The man in the background appears to be walking away from the camera. Maybe he has given up and is finally deciding to run away. I don't have any suggestion for the gazeebo in the background yet, but I'll think about it again after I review and study the lyrics. For those of you who have the single, study the cover and lyrics and post your suggestions to the jam. I'm sure that the 'jammers would like to hear some more on this thread. Ytse: Which song? J: All of them! Y: But which album do you mean? The themes are different. J: ALL OF THEM!!! All albums, all songs, all instrumentals! They're all crazy! I can't make heads or tails of them! Liquid shadows, spiders in windows, dances of this, dances of that, audiences ticking on a wall, blah, blah, blah! Y: Are you making fun of their lyrics? J: No, I just don't understand them. Are YOU making fun of DT's lyrics? ARE YOU?! Y: Of course not. J: Good. 'Cause if you are, the siren'll kick your ass from a dream!! HA!! Y: I'm sure. Anyway, I've almost got this transcription finished. J: What for? Transcriptions are hopelessly flawed!! Y: As are people, but somehow I put up with them. Hint, hint. J: Yeah yeah yeah, I put up with you, don't I? And you're a person, right? So we're even! Y: No, that's not logical. J: "Logic?!" What, are you trying to speak Dutch? Y: No, that's a Greek word. J: Okay, I was wondering why I didn't know what it meant. Y: Anyway, I'm almost done with my transcription. J: You'll never finish. It's wrong. It will take too long. No one is interested. Y: You're just full of positivity today, aren't you? J: That's me. Anyway, why transcribe? DT is a bunch of sellouts. Y: Excuse me? J: They are! I liked 'em five minutes ago, but now I don't! Y: How have they "sold out?" J: I don't know, they just HAVE. They made videos and stuff. Y: But no one will play their videos. J: SO?! Bands don't need public exposure to be sellouts! They just have to TRY to get public exposure!! Y: But isn't that how bands become successful? Make money, survive, reach new listeners, more fans, that sort of thing? J: Yeah, but so what! They're SELLOUTS if they do that! And I HATE SELLOUTS!! Y: So you basically hate all bands that try to better their situation in life through their music, namely by bringing that music to larger audiences. J: YES!! FUCKING SELLOUTS!! A true artist doesn't NEED money!! Or fans!! Y: So are the members of DT true artists? J: Hell yes they are! Y: So therefore they don't need us as fans. J: What? I'm a DT fan and I love it! Y: And, DT doesn't need you because they're "true artists." J: What the fuck... Is that more of that "logic" crap? Y: Oh yeah, sorry... J: Speaking of crap, I hate punk rock! Y: Once again, I think you are hating too much. J: Okay, you want some Greek? "Screw-us you-us." Y: Sounds like Latin to me. You need to open your eyes, friend. J: What? My eyes ARE open. Y: Or better, lose them. J: LOSE my eyes?? Y: Adesso che ho perso la vista, ci vedo meglio e di piu. J: Oh, now you're speaking Spanish. I know that language! Y: Actually, it's Italian. It means, "I can see much clearer now, I'm blind." J: Spanish, Italian, what's the difference?! And that line sounds like something out of the Bible. I guess DT are a buncha Christians or something. Y: Quoting the Bible doesn't necessarily mean DT is a Christian band. The Bible is full of poetic verse, and lots of bands quote various passages. J: That's because they're SELLOUTS!! Y: Okay, so now quoting the Bible makes you a sellout? J: Yeah! It's not an original thought! They're just following the herd! Y: The herd? Are you saying we're sheep? Okay, what happens if one of these guys does their own thing and writes original lyrics? Do you think other "sheep" may follow suit? J: If they do, then they're corrupting the goat herd!! Y: "Corrupting the goat herd?" Excuse moi? J: Aha! FRENCH!! Yeah, they corrupt ze goat herd. Y: What's with all this goat-talk? What does livestock have to do with DT? J: I like livestock! Sheep are cool, I have sheep in my bed! Y: I don't think your personal habits have anything to do with DT. J: Oh yeah? James LaBrie likes goats and stuff too! He SINGS like a goat! Y: Come on, SINGS like a goat? J: Yeah, and he's GAY!! Y: Excuse me? J: He's FUCKIN' GAY, like the intro to "Status Seeker!" Y: What are you talking about? I happen to like "Status Seeker." And how is LaBrie a homosexual? Not that it makes any difference to me liking DT's music... J: Just listen to "Pull Me Under" at 4:38! He says, "The whole world is spinning in soddomy..." He likes goats AND he's a homosexual! Y: So? J: SOOO, if he's a homosexual, then he's a SELLOUT!! Y: I think you need a Brain-Blast. J: I think YOU need a MERCY FUCK!! HA!! What's a "Brain-Blast" anyway? Y: It's where me and ten other rational people hold you down, jam a garden hose up one of your nostrils, and turn it on full-blast. J: Up my nose widda rubba hose? This is the Ytsejams, not Welcome Back Kotter! Y: You can't stay on topic with anything, can you? You always have to be joking around? J: You'd prefer I FLAMED everyone? Y: No thanks... Message-ID: Morning all, Be warned, this contribution to the Jam has some DT content. Some people may not like it (especially those who cannot tolerate people having any sort of positive opinion about any other band). OK, here goes: Last night was nostalgia night (just ain't what it used to be) and I was giving my stereo a good bashing with some old Genesis stuff. It was the turn of Foxtrot. 'Can Utility and the Coastliners' had finished, and I was getting ready for 'Supper's Ready' when the little acoustic track 'Horizons' started. "Wait a minute", I thought, "where have I heard this recently??". Foxtrot is removed from the CD player to be replaced by ACoS. You guessed it folks. The acoustic intro/outro sounds a lot like 'Horizons'. Not all of it, just the first 30 seconds or so of both pieces. I'm not suggesting a rip off, but there is a remarkable similarity if anybody wants to hear it. I even asked the guy I live with to listen to the two intros, and he confirmed what I thought. Try it yourselves: I would be interested to know if anybody else can hear the similarity (especially in the bass strings). The intro to ACoS also sounds a lot like the 12th track 'Experimental' on Subconscious, but I expect that has already been commented on somewhere. Did you realize that 'Supper's Ready' is almost as long as ACoS? (yes) My listening list for last night included Foxtrot (Genesis), Close to the Edge (Yes), Tarkus (ELP) and Birds of Fire (Mahavishnu Orchestra), all stuff that I used to listen to when I was 14-15. Which got me wondering: how much of the new stuff that we listen to now will we be listening to in 20 plus years time? I must admit I got quite a bit of amusement out of the image of me, sitting in my rocking chair, with my hearing aid turned full up and whistling through my last two teeth to 'The Silent Man'! Nearly finished, just a couple of odd bits and pieces. Mr. Dinishak called us all 'fuckers' (his word, not mine). If anybody wants to insult me in a personal email as a consequence of something that I post to the jam (like some of you have done), fine by me. But I object to these global insults just because somebody is too lazy to skip entries that he/she/it doesn't want to read. And please, when you quote something from the Jam, try and keep the quote as small as possible - this means that Ken Bibb can then pack more new info into each new digest (hi Ken, you're doing a great job). More from me soon. stay safe and happy listening Neil Gallop (nga@software-ag.de) Currently playing: Chris Squire - A Fish Out Of Water (a great bass player) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 31 Oct 1995 21:20:26 +0900 From: email_address_removed.go.jp (tomoko nomoto) To: email_address_removed Subject: request Message-ID: Hello! To: email_address_removed Subject: Birch Hill tickets..... Message-ID: Someone please explain this to me...... I was at Willowbrook Mall in NJ yesterday, and they have a ticket center there (it's not TicketFuck), so I look up on the board, and they have tickets for the DT show at the Birch Hill, so I say to myself "Let me buy a ticket now, just in case I will be able to go to the show". I walk up to the window and order a ticket. The person at the counter says, "OK, that'll be $22.50". Wow, that's pretty steep, I think, but they probably raised the price on it. I get the ticket, get home, and lo and behold, I realize that I paid AN 80% SERVICE CHARGE FOR THE GODDAMN TICKET!!!!!. The face value on the ticket is $12.50, and it says $15 at the door. Why, then, do I pay $10 extra for my ticket. Could be me, but is this really possible to do. I mean I know that TM has like a $5-$7.50 charge, but doubling the price of the ticket!!! That's absolutely ridiculous. Someone please tell me if this is correct/legal/what- ever.......
