Message-ID: After taking in a ridiculous amount of jams over the past couple weeks, here are my thoughts on recent threads (I'll save my comment about the whole Shannon Hoon thing until the end since I know most of you don't want to read it). (1) IvanHoe - I grabbed a sample off the prog-rock review web page. Unfortunately my connection somehow got terminated and I only ended up with about 1/3 of the WAV file. Does anyone know where I can FTP "IVAN01.WAV" (or the ZIP version)? I'll try the same site ... I just seem to be having a few problems with my SLIP connection (argh..>) Anyway, from the 1/3 of that WAV file I've heard, this is a !!!GREAT!!! band!! AWESOME!! EVERYONE CHECK THEM OUT, just do a search for "IvanHoe" (not sure of the prog-rock reviews page's URL offhand). I haven't checked if cdnow.com has their CD(s), but I hope to friggin god they do, because this is one incredible band. I'm already ordering Shadow Gallery's CD, as from what I've heard recently and a few months ago, I don't think I would be disappointed. This is the first piece of music that has gotten me so excited about them so quickly. The other band that made this type of impresion is (of course) DT ... these guys are simply awesome. Here I'm saying this after only hearing 20 seconds of their music, but if all of their stuff is this good (or close), they could come damn close to replacing DT as my favourite band (although I'm not sure if that would be possible), or at least coming close to I&W as my favourite album of all time. (2) Juvenility - Well, whoever it was complaining about the maturity level of posts of late, I'd happen to agree with you. But you'd be surprised at the age of people on this list. I'm 17 myself, and I've always considered myself one of the younger people on the list. I don't think there are too many people my age here, most of the people on the list are in college/university, at least. However, the maturity level of some people lately has really become noticable. Just relax people, calmn down, and resist the need to flame people. Take a step back, and read a few 'jams, and read your messages over before you post them, and think "is this really what I want to post", and "would I want Mike Portnoy to see this if he's reading this jam", or whatever. Anything! It's starting to get annoying getting 5 jams a day full of flames ... I think this list is just going through a period where people don't have much to talk about. Bear with it, and don't give up on the list just yet. It's pretty bad now, but a few months ago, the list was great. You should grab an old jam from about half a year ago or so and read it ... I think you'll find the discussion was much better then. I hope in a few weeks all this will ahve calmned down ... (3) Shannon Hoon - Again, CALMN DOWN! I'm sure that the people who're putting smilies on their messages about Shannon's death were -NOT- "smiling" when they heard the news, nor are they making fun of him. Quite simply, it's not very easy at all to express one's self over this medium. One person may interpret the ":)" as the person laughing, whereas someone else might interpret it as hinting sarcasm, or whatnot. I dunno, maybe it's to explain, but I find myself putting ":)"'s on my messages all the time, after certain expressions, even if I"m not laughing, not smiling, or don't find what I'm saying even the least bit amusing. I believe I even put a ":)" in my message about Shannon's death (yes, I was one of the 500 or so people who posted the "news" not knowing that the other 499 or so had found out the same thing at the exact same time), yet I definately was -NOT- feeling happy about it. It was simply expressing the fact that I thought it was really ironic how this happened now, but I said quite clearly in my message that I was a bit shocked, and couldn't really believe my ears when I heard it (partially because of all this stuff recently though, it was hard to believe something that ironic would happen). I still think it's a terrible thing, even if I had no respect for the guy or his music. I do find a couple of people's attitudes quite disturbing though. In particular, the other LARS on the list in Germany - "maybe (I hope) the rest of the band will be next". I mean, GIVE ME A BREAK! Would you say that if (god forbid) one of the members in DT died? I mean, look at Savatage. I don't know if you're a Savatage fan, but I sure know I would be EXTREMELY pissed off and absolutely sickened if someone said "Good, Criss Oliva is dead, I hope the rest of the band will be next". And to you people who're thinking about replying to any of the negative commments, cool it! See the paragraph before the above paragraph. I know there are a couple of people on the list who were being malicious about it, but please, flood their e-mail box -- the rest of the list doesn't need to hear that you're disgusted about Lars' comments. We know, we are too. But it's not something that needs to be dwelt on like the Kurt Cobain thing. My grandmother died last summer, and some of my cousins, aunts and uncles were extremely upset by it, and couldn't get over it -- I was upset, but got over it. Death is a fact of life, and it's natural to be upset and devatated, but you can't dwell on it, the best way to handle it is to get over it. You don't have to stay miserable for the rest of your life to remember them. "The way your heart beats makes all the difference, It's what decides if you'll endure the pain that we all feel." ... "Through nature's inflexible grace, I'm learning to live". Right? (4) Let's just forget about the whole Blind Melon thing. There are other things to talk about. I know it's tempting to post messages saying "Blind Melon suck", but come on. Again, they bashed DT. So what. This is the second time this thread has surfaced while I've been on the 'jam and it's starting to get ridiculous ... let's just find something else to talk about. Ditto for these top 5 lists. (5) Despite what I said in (4), it's nice to see there are so many other people on the list who're also into Def Leppard, Metallica and Alice in Chains. I loved all of those bands before DT, and Def Leppard are a great band, they're the first rock band I got into, they introduced me to the genre way back in the 80's ... if it weren't for them, I wouldn't have gotten into Metallica, and subsequently QR and then DT. Although I rarely listen to any of those bands anymore, but Metallica fans should check out the unofficial Jaymz' web page, there are WAV files of 2 new songs they played at Donnington, "2 by 4" and "Devil's Dance". Interesting to say the least, they don't sound at all like anything I've heard from Metallica before, a bit more jazzy, etc. (6) That's it for now - excuse my language, but fuck that was long! -- Lars Hellsten <*> Internet: email_address_removed <*> Dream Theater! B) You LI/NY folks, is there any way to purchase tickets in advance for the Malibu show? I can think of no more embarassing thing than to arrive all breathless and bright-eyed only to be met by a closed box-office. (I once rented a car and drove up to Washington to see Hawkwind, and the tour had been cancelled. Ooops!) C) Current itinerary, as planned out (sorta) on IRC last night, is for Kylania to drive over from Omaha, pick up Freeza in Memphis, and then either down here to Atlanta or I drive up and meet them somewhere aling the way. Fans in GA, SC, NC and TN take note. D) An alternate plan is to fly up to see the show. Any DT fans in the tri-state area feel like acting as honored hosts/chauffeurs? :) (I think we'd be able to swing a hotel/motel room ourselves, though.) E) After flying up to Detroit to see DT last November -- still my only live DT experience -- I'm thinking to myself, "Is this really worth it?" Well, I spent well over $250 on that trip, and even though I didn't get to meet the band, I'd have to say FUCK, YEA. This is something I'd really like to do. I just hope I don't lose my job for it. :) -- I know it's easier to walk away than look it in the eye.... I would raise a shelter to the sky... Technically, he's a brilliant player, However, his music sound slick...and at the same time, lifeless. See, with Randy Rhoads, his music was full of emotion AND speed. Malmsteen? Does anyone know if DT are Christians? > >Randy Randy: Please point out when/where DT uses Christian themes in their lyrics. What songs? I don't believe DT uses Christ-like themes in their music, though there might be hints of Christianity laced in some songs. As for positive themes, I don't neccesarily believe DT has a greater percentage of positive over negative emotions in their music. Take the Time is a type of New-age thinking. "you can find all you need in your mind, if you take the time". Scarred and Space Dye Vest is very depressing to me. LTL is somewhat positive though John M. is also pointing out how wicked this world can be. Christians look to Jesus Christ to "find all they need" to live by. Our finite minds are limited to the here and now. When a Christian seeks wisdom from God through Jesus he/she is "finding" what they need from a far greater source than that of their own mind. I can sight other examples to this effect. I can also find anti-Christian lyrics in alot of their songs, e.g. Voices, ACOS and Afterlife to name a few. As for knowing if DT are Christians or not; the Bible says you can judge a tree by the fruit it bears. No one knows the heart of man except God, so only God and that person knows for sure. As for the fruit DT bears I would have to say that though they may believe in God, they probably do not have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ which would make them Christians. There are at least four song writers in the band and by judging what they have written I would say they do not have that aforementioned relationship with the Almighty God. I love it when they perform "O Holy Night" which is the only Chistian oriented song I believe they perform. Your welcome to write me directly to further discuss this if the Y-jammers get annoyed with this thread. Some Y-jammers are very sensitive when one talks of Christ on this list. Hopefully everyone will recieve this with an open mind and continue it. They played just about all of "Thrak" and a good deal of "Discipline". I was a little disappointed that there was nothing from "Beat" or "Three of a Perfect Pair" although I understand that songs from these may be introduced later in the tour. Adrian Belew dominates; his guitar parts are easiest to determine. Robert Fripp, unlit, and Trey Gunn are harder to distinguish - the arsenal of sounds at their disposal make it virtually impossible to categorise who is playing what. It's not a traditional crescendo-building show. The only pre-Belew songs, "Red" and "The Talking Drum/Larks Tongue in Aspic II" don't take top-billing in either the main set or encores. You may consider the final encore a slight anti-climax. The standard of playing and arrangement throughout is exemplary, making for a clinically-perfect, if rather cool and detatched performance; a welcome warmth and intimacy drew from the fact that I saw them on Bill Bruford's birthday which led Belew to improvise spontaneous new lyrics to "Indiscipline". It's a powerful, precise, and occasionally rather frightening show. Avoid imbibing hallucinogens beforehand at all costs!
