I suggest that all of the jammers who haven't picked this one up do so, since it is well worth your money. The untimely fate of Kevin Moore post came from someone who listened to the radio. If we take into account what radio people say the following must have happened: 1. Neil Peart of Rush has died of cancer and/or quit the band. 2. Rush released a new album in May of 1995 and have been touring on it. 3. Pink Floyd is working on their 2nd leg of the US tour at this moment. 4. Yes has finally broken up, no really. 5. I'm sure this has already been discussed, but I wasn't around for it. I'm primarily interested in any comments the band has made about it, if any. If you want, you can e-mail me personally. Another topic that I'd like to bring up, which may or may not have been discussed before is the prevalence of Christian images in DT's lyrics. With a band like King's X, it makes sense, since they are on some level Christians. With DT, however, that is not the case (to my knowledge-correct me if I'm wrong). Religious images are prevalent in art and society in general, even if the artist is not promoting the idea. I'm aware of that. I suppose, I just find it interesting, being a Christian, to see a rather extensive use of such images in a band like DT. Sometimes it may just be used arbitrarily, to create an image (hense the purpose of imagery). I'm just curious if anyone else has any thoughts on any other reason, or any reflections at all about this idea. But I decided to send it to the jam for several reasons: - other people might want to add their stuff to it - I am trying to start a new thread (well new for me, but more of that later). OK, so who invented punk. Basically it was Malcom Mclaren, who just wanted to make some quick cash (nothing wrong with that) and so he invented the Sex Pistols. The whole aim of the Pistols was to make money quick, send people up, and (in my opinion, most importantly) give the music scene of the time a much needed kick up the butt. Why do I say importantly? Well, if you look back to the mid 70's (I know a lot of you were still shitting your diapers at the time), the music scene was dominated by just a handful of established bands and things were becoming somewhat stagnant. True, some of the bands were (and in some cases still are) good - Yes, Floyd, Sabbath, Genesis -, but nothing really new and innovative was coming out. Flame me if you want, but that's how I felt at the time. There was a sort of underground/club scene, with bands like Dr. Feelgood, Graham Parker, Eddie and the Hotrods, but this scene was too small and too well behaved to be really noticed by the music establishment. Then came the Pistols. The music industry (like it or not, it is an industry, and like any other, is geared at making money) has never been the same since. The established bands had to sit down and rethink their positions, they couldn't just publish anything that they wanted, knowing that it would be bought for lack of anything else. New innovative bands were suddenly being presented a chance to get contracts and air play (The Cure would never have made it without John Peel) and the whole rock scene started to diversify. In my opinion, the Sex Pistols album 'Never Mind the Bollocks' is one of the 5 most influential albums of the last 20 or so years; in an odd roundabout sort of way DT would not have been possible without it (ducks into nuclear shelter to avoid flames). True, a lot of the punk bands that then jumped on the bandwagon were true crap, but they soon disappeared to where they came from, and the first punk movement died. This, however, had prepared the ground for some new bands to come up, and these new post-punk bands included some metal/rock classics like Iron Maiden, Saxon, Def Leppard etc. These bands in turn influenced the next generation and the diversification continued. Anyway, most of you should be able to see what I'm getting at. Now to my proposed new thread (which may have DT content or not, it's up to you: what do the Jammers consider to be the most influential albums of the last 20 or so years? My list (not in any order, either chronologically or in significance) is as follows Sex Pistols - Never Mind The Bollocks Beatles - Sargeant Pepper's Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust Jimi Hendrix - Electric Ladyland Please join in, I think the results could be quite telling. Oh, just one more thing before I sign of for today. If you don't like other bands ripping into DT, just ignore them. You don't have to listen to them. I can happily live with people who listen to Take That or New Kids on the Block, as long as I don't have to listen to it. Loosen up, this is also more to life than DT (apart from which, what would we have to bitch about if everybody liked DT and if all musicians played in DT clones?). Get those lists in, and sensible flames only please (not the YOU ASSHOLE type) stay safe and happy listening Neil Gallop (nga@software-ag.de) 37 years young and not getting any wiser ------------------------------ End of YTSEJAM Digest 1056 **************************
