He walks up to the Pearly Gates with his guitar in hand and is STOKED! He hears all this jamming going on, DT on the radio and PA, and life is just great. St. Peter greets Mike and tells him he has been a good person through out life. He notes that this is mainly due to the many DT fans he has brought such joy to by the many bootlegs he has contributed to society. St Peter informs Mike that (somehow) all the great guitarists have made it here also; Hendrix, Pettruci, Vai, Van Halen, Santana, E. Johnson, Lifeson, and many more. Mike inquieres about Malmsteen (in Mikes opinion, one the best of all!). St Peter gets a grave look on his face and replies,"No MIkek I'm afraid he didn't make it." Well Mike gets his bags and amp and goes to his room when all of the sudden he hears the familiar neo-classical lightnigh fast smooth as butter chops that could only come from non other than the incredible Malmsteen. So Mike runs down to Peter again and says "Peter, Malmsteen IS here! I just heard him!" Petee replies, "No I'm afraid he isn't...sorry mike :( . So Mike, feeling sad once agian, goes to his room when again he hears the incredibly clean picked neo-classical sounds that he loves so. Once again Mike rushes down to St Peter and again exclaims that he has heard Malmsteen. St Peter looks at Mike with eyes of grief and says again that Malmsteen didn't make it to heaven. Mike, feeling very confused, thinks for a minute and then asks who the sounds in the next room are coming from. St. Peter, with a very worried look on his face replies hesitantly "Well Im not suppose to tell, but, its God. He thinks he's Malmsteen! ____________________________________________________________________________ "...Every day there's a constant reminder of all the pleasures we shared together. Anything in % borders is my commentary. >From Guitar for the Practicing Musician, January 1994 "Pull Me Under" Images And Words Dream Theater (ATCO/East-West) Christopher: This could be metal at any moment--I'm just warning everybody. Rogers: Either that or it could build up into a power ballad. C: I feel like we might have to excuse ourselves here for a second. We might have to leave. % so get the fuck out! -ed % R: This is one of those guitar sounds that when he hits a note, about a million lights jump up on his guitar rig. C: Any minute now there is gonna be a squealy. R: Is this, like, Queensryche? C: If it is, let's turn it off right away because I hate that band. % blasphemy! fucking assholes % R: Hate it. This is the kind of music you listen to right when you start to get your pubic hairs. C: I can't even be fair to this music, I hate it so bad. I can't even sit through one song. I know I'm not being fair but I think it is complete garbage. That sort of guitar playing is just stupid. % it's better than anything you ever played, poser. % R: If I want to hear a metal band I really like old Black Sabbath and Soundgarden, heavy bands with brains. % I can't fucking stand to type what this guy is saying... it's so far gone from the truth. % If I were listening to an angry metal band I would be more into Rage Against the Machine % commercialism central % or Sugar. I like that Sugar record a lot, I like Sonic Youth a lot. % trendy shit % That's heavy, guitar based music that I listen to. C: Playing fast for the sake of fast is hideous. I hate that whole mentality of sitting around playing scales and cock-rock crap. % this is true, I don't think Christopher CAN play a scale, unlike the precision and attention to detail you hear from Petrucci, Christopher is sloppy and in a word, sucks. I can play better and I think I suck, compared to Petrucci. I figured out the riffs to "No Rain" in 3 minutes. No joke. % R: I heard some squealies. % some WHAT? % I don't really like that sound either. I'm not into those guitar sounds. When I hear that stuff I get feeling squeamish. Guitar: That was Dream Theater. C: We'll remember not to buy that record. I bet they have really nice hair... now I'm being mean. % no, now you're showing your ignorance. % R: This is just our opinion. There's a lot of people that like Dream Theater and that's fine. % got news for you... DT has more true fans than Bland Lemon will ever have. % They get off on it--good for them. They'll probably hate us, maybe they won't. % we do. % C: They probably do because we sound like we're playing sloppy. But that's alright, that's a different thing. % "we just suck, that's all." % We're just coming from a different space. R: In no way do we condemn this sort of music. These people have a right to exist. C: Just keep it the hell away from us. [on to the other songs.] To give you an idea how fucked-up Blind Melon are, they liked: Medicated Goo - Traffic Midnight Rider - Almond Brothers And they hated: Babe I'm Gonna Leave You - Sons of Mercury Omaha - Moby Grape Pull Me Under - Dream Theater Little Miss Can't Be Wrong - Spin Doctors Always With Me Always With You - Joe Satriani In other words, they hated all the guitarists who are clearly better than they can ever hope to be. But there's hope!! These letters to the editor appeared in the February 1994 issue with Alex Lifeson of Rush on the cover!! "...I've had it! I'm sick of these stupid fucks writing that heavy metal is soulless, mindless bullshit..." "...If you have something to say about another type of music, keep it to yourself." And in March 1994: "Blind Lemon only wish they could compare to Queensryche and Dream Theater!" "...John Petrucci's technical skill and rapturous melodies are things of beauty, things that Christopher and Rogers hate because they can't create such things themselves..." And so on. Blind Melon sucks. Dream Theater forever! ____________________________________________________________________________ "...Every day there's a constant reminder of all the pleasures we shared together. Ibanez and Tama sponsored a concert by them which was held in the parking lot of a local music store. For 20 mins, the rain teased us, then let up enough for them to uncover the instruments and play one song, only to have to pack up and quit for good this time. But it was still a great time. It was a very small group (20 people) and they stayed and answered many questions inside the store. I had never heard Tribal but was impressed by the one song I heard. GREAT drummer and all the rest were good too, but the drummer was warming up so I got to hear more of him. Anyway I wonder if they listen to Dream Theater (hmmmm)... They talked about how they throw CDs which they dont like out of the side door on their van and watch them shadder as they drive 60 mph down the highway. I wanted to ask them this, but was afraid of what my reaction would be if they had said they did this to DT's CDs.
