I have heard this guy LIVE!!! He is absolutely incredible! I went to David Lipscomb High School, and last year at our "talent" show, he and his daughter did a song together, then his daughter left the stage and he did a 10-MINUTE!! song unaccompanied with some of the most fantastic guitar playing I have ever seen, and believe me, I've seen good playing (ex. Live in Tokyo, Yngwie Malmsteen) before. So, my favorite guitarists list goes forth: 1) John Petrucci (naturally!) 2) Phil Keaggy 3) Yngwie Malmsteen 4) Alex Lifeson (not so much speed, but feeling for the mood) 5) Eric Clapton (good music, not super fast, just good music) Well guys, that's yet another post for me, Chris Crowder ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Oct 95 20:54:08 EDT From: dark star To: email_address_removed Subject: melon crazy. Message-ID: IMNSHO... attention blind melon bashers: YOU'VE MADE YOUR FUCKING POINT. LET IT GO. ok, i'll admit, the comments rogers and christopher made about dt in the interview sucked pretty hard... ... but haven't we been going over a few threads here on the 'jam about separating bands' music from their personal opinions, actions, personal hygiene, etc.? letting the music stand on its own? how many of you melon-bashers have actually listened to blind melon other than "no rain" or "galaxie" or whatever else is on mtv? their music is not really all that catchy, not because it's not good, but because it's really different from anything else around. i don't even know how to categorize it ("alternative rock" is not a category anymore-- and don't write in and say it belongs in the "shit" category). i hate to break it to you (and this might stir up some shit), but blind melon is not as far away from prog-rock as you might think. no, they didn't get college degrees in their respective instruments, and their technique reflects it, but their music is seriously way more complex than most of what litters the airwaves nowadays. time-sig changes, feel shifts, dynamics, weird song structure (verse-chorus-verse is the exception rather than the rule). the music grows on you; it's not immediately accessible ("no rain" being the embarrassing fluke). that's why their new album is not doing as well as their debut, because they refused to pander and sell out. that's pretty admirable, especially for a band so unfairly derided as an "mtv" band. ok, so, blind melon is not as good as dream theater. fine. cool. i'm there. but it's apples to oranges, you know? they're not in the same league as dream theater, nor should they be. they're meant to be appreciated on different levels, by different kinds of people (or by the same kinds of people sometimes). i happen to be a blind melon fan, one of the pre-"no rain" club, and they already get next to no credit or respect for their music, which is a damn shame. if you hate blind melon, ok, you hate blind melon. if blind melon (or at least those 2 guitarists) hate dream theater, that's their loss. it doesn't diminish from their music-- and if it does for you, then maybe you aren't as musically-oriented in your appreciation of music as so many of you claim to be. but please, let's stop with the militant "boycott blind melon" and endless "blind melon sucks" posts and ascii pics and letter-writing campaigns, because it's getting old and starting to sound pretty immature. you're stooping to their level (as petrucci thankfully did not do in that interview someone mentioned). imagine the members of dt reading these 'jams and wondering how their fans got so bitchy. so, to reiterate: i'm not squelching you for hating blind melon-- feel free to do so if you want. i am, however, questioning your criteria for hating them, and your insistence on cluttering up the 'jam with all your piss and vinegar. capeesh? thanks. dream theater rules. semi-funny drummer joke (as if i need to piss off more people now): q. how do you know if your band is playing on a level stage? a. the drool comes out of both sides of the drummer's mouth. To everyone interested, Ticketmaster is selling tickets. When you call, give them the event code ELB1228 and that should do the trick. Someone PLEASE post directions to El-N-Gee and Birch Hill. Also, could anyone give me a mileage estimate from New York to New London, CT and New York to Old Bridge, NJ.? I'm making my plans and need to know how long it will take me to get from show to show. Cool how we've got so many threads going, but there doesn't seem to be a stitch of DT in this here sweater... ---------- To Chris Caminiti: Your top five bands deserve a big fat truck of lard. I don't know what that means, but that's what I thought of as I stared in disbelief at your post. :) ---------- To Adam Bertapelle: > Hey. Blind Melon is playing on campus (Boulder, CO) very soon. Wouldn't > it be a pity if their tour buses ended up with Dream Theater graffiti > all over them ;) The real "pity" involved in this idea is the fact that I don't live in Boulder, CO... :) Seriously, you must ask yourself if Dream Theater would do such a thing, as you may begin a band-war that DT never meant to occur. Would John Petrucci retaliate in this manner? Probably not. Okay, so he'd strap the members of Blind Melon into chairs and force them to repeat music theory lessons from a chalkboard for three hours straight while listening to Racer X. We all know that's not a very *fun* way to exact revenge, but it's definitely less damaging/repercussive than your idea, glorious as it would be to go through with. On second thought, Blind Melon would probably be scarred for life if this sort of education were to happen to them. Perhaps you could just mail them pages of Dream Theater tablature to give them nightmares for a while. ---------- To ALL: (Re: Kevin Moore is dying) Huh? ---------- To Richard Rivera: I surprisingly agree with just about everything on your list. Tommy Lee is one of my favorites, and has been for many years. I like his work on the new Motley album much more than his older stuff, though. As for Rikki Rocket, I saw Poison live many years ago, and I remember Rocket did some pretty incredible stuff that one would NEVER find on a Poison album. Terry Bozzio and Mike Portnoy: hell yes. Ticco Torres: yes, severely underrated is how to describe him. The "up and coming" fellow is Mike Mangini, the new kickass drummer in Extreme. I can't wait to see this guy live. Speaking of Extreme, I can't wait for Nuno's solo album! As for guitarists, I wouldn't call Blues Saraceno "up and coming." He's been moving and shaking since 1989, and in my opinion is one of the most virtuosic, stylistic players around. Billy Sheehan and John Myung. Yet another "hell yes." Vocals, yes, you pegged all the guys that have an individual "style" of singing, and a sound that no one else has ever imitated successfully. Bach, Lane, Tyler, and Michaels. And wait...what's that? That fifth name... It looks like... No, it can't be! Someone is saying JAMES LABRIE is a (gulp!) FAVORITE VOCALIST??? Well, that makes two of us. Let's start a mailing list. ---------- Again to Chris Caminiti: > I attended the National Guitar Summer Workshop two summer ago when - you > guessed it - John Petrucci was a guest clinician (nahh, I didn't go to > see him, though ;) . Anyways, he played "Barfbag" with a sequencer or DAT National Guitar what? ---------- To Scott Cook: All take notice. > I think it was probably me who did the post where you were referred to > as a "guy" (jam #1039). When I was writing the letter, I did not have the > article to look to as a reference. I should have checked the list again > before I sent the letter out. I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings. You got me started on equipment. Hope you have time to read all of this. I have been playing guitar FOREVER...at least it feels like it. I went to Berk (seen DT play 30-40 times, only met John once but from the first time I saw him play, I was inspried). My main inspiration and all time fav guitarist is George Lynch. I even went of the deep end and bought the George Lynch signature ESP guitar!. [I love a lot of other players too: Tony MacAlpine, Paul Gilbert, John Norum, JP, Eric Johnson, Jennifer Batten, Lincoln Brewster, Reb Beach, Greg Howe, Brian May, Neil Schon) and of course there are great players that I respect (i.e. Stevie Ray, Al Dimeola, Pat Metheny, Alan Holdworth, Eddie] I started to get "serious" about guitar when the shred thing started to happen. I took lessons from Tony MacAlpine. I was SO into the Lynch thing that I went on the equipment search for years looking for 'that" sound. I have many opinions about why I have the following stuff and would be glad to answer any questions (i.e. why I ONLY use tube power amps etc.) GUITARS ESP - George Lynch model ESP custom (Koa w/ Sey D JB Hum & ESP single coil and piezo with Floyd and 22 fret rosewood neck) PRS custom (10 top, wide/thin 24 fret un-finished neck, personal color) G & L Legacy Brian Moore MC1 Parker Fly RACK (current list of junk) VHT, Soldano, Hughes & Kettner, Rocktron, Marshall, Boogie, Bogner, Engle Cab I use GB cabs that I wire myself "in series" to increase the load and run my tube poweramps hotter. I fill the cabs with Celestion Vintage 30's on the top and Peavey EVH 5150's on the bottom. (For supper warm, clean I also have a Roland 4-12) My advise on processors...use them sparingly, not to clutter your sound, but do use them. I have tried just about everything. Some are hard to use, some are easy, some break, some do not, some give you COMPLETE control over the mix and the sounds, some don't. MOST muddy/ruin your original sound unless you just barely use them. I my opinion, the only only ones I would recommend are made by Lexicon, Rocktron (especially the Intellifex), and (if anyone can afford one...Eventide. If you want heavy processing, my $0.02 is that you can only do it right by running a sep dry signal and a sep wet signal. Thanks - George E-mail: email_address_removed P.S. Last week I had the privelege of seeing an operation on a guy whose right ball was the size of an orange. The doctor there was telling me, back in the old days, people just let their balls grow like this. (they sometimes produce too much protective fluid when hit too hard) They got to be the size of basketballs, and at that size the guys had to carry their balls around in their hands. To them it was a sign of their manhood. Anyways, these guys even sat on their balls (for fun?). Weird stuff. Anyways, I too like the idea about the least favorite DT songs. I always skip Pull Me Under. And I pretty much skip over all of WDADU except for the Ytsejam. Then on Awake I'd have to say Space Dye Vest. Message-ID: hi nathan, I read your message and think I can answer your questions. Criss Oliva died oct 17th 1993 at the age of 30. he was on his way to a concert with his wife, Dawn, when a completely drunk truck driver changed his lane and crushed Criss'car. Criss died immediately, Dawn survived very badly injured... when I learned about this, it was an incredible loss for me; five months before, I had the great honour and pleasure to meet Criss backstage at a venue in my hometown. he was one of rock's greatest personalities and one of the most innovative guitarists so far, and I will always remember him like I met him that evening!! as for jon, he left the band in 1992 because he wanted to form his own band, Dr Butcher , which is similar to the old SAVA-stuff from the 80's; very biting, raw and edgy. nonetheless, he is - together with Paul O'Neill, the "undercover-member" of SAVATAGE - co-writing and co-producing the albums. if you like STREETS, you should check out their latest release, DEAD WINTER DEAD, which is even more classic-style, and here, jon is singing on two tracks. for more info, send me mail or check out the SAVA-home page! madness reigns... -- martin ------------------------------ End of YTSEJAM Digest 1053 **************************
