I am writing to address a few questions I saw earlier in the Jams. Correct me if I'm wrong. Cynic! These are THE boys! If anyone has not yet heard their album, PLEASE, take my word on it, and buy it! If you are aprehensive about buying a cd on the word of someone you've never met, write me at AOL, and we can arrange for me to send you a tape. Unfortunately, Cynic, from what I last heard, have broken up. They may be recording a last album, but I don't have any way to confirm this right now. I don't know what either of the guitarists are up to, but rumor has it the drummer (Sean Rhinert ) and the Bassist (Shawn Malone) are working on a fusion-style album. What I can say for sure, is that Cynic is MORE complex than D.T. That is not to say that they are better (in fact, I like DT much more) but they are amazing. Sean not only has some of the fastest feet in the world, but also does some INSANE polyrhythms... things I (as a guitarist) can't even BEGIN to explain. Shawn Malone is a fretless Bass Virtuoso. The guitarists (Paul Masvidal and Jason Gobel) are amazing at composing winding dramatic rhythms and solos. Chris Poland CD: Hey, I don't remember who asked, but if you need it, I'll send it to you. I will even sell my cd if you are interested. ACOS tab: Hey, Brian, you shouldn't be so easily ruffled. You were doing well on the tune. Just because some asshole cuts you down once, you are going to give up? Don't be so weak! Hey! I have volunteered to transcribe parts of ACOS, and thought I could be of some major help, since I have a 7-string, but I got no response. I am not ABOUT to transcribe the whole thing, so if you are still interested, please assign me a part. There is nothing in the song that I can't handle (or so I think... I could be wrong). Finally, GUITARISTS out there, if anyone has any questions about any of the virtuoso shredders out there, or has facts to share, WRITE ME! I have about 300 cd's and the majority of them are Guitar solo albums, or Guitar oriented music (though I am not closed minded-I even listen to BJORK What's wrong with me!?!?) and I am looking for some people who know their stuff to talk to. I figure that most of you are at least into cool music, since you're here, so write! I have lots o' knowledge to share (I even Know BUCKETHEAD's real name!). Best Bands\Solo Artists 1).Jason Becker 2) Fates Warning 3) Cynic 4) Al DiMeola 5) Michael Hedges Probably in that order. Well this is getting long... I'll shut up now. Hey, on my last message (I'm on AOL) I sent here, it left a huge section of blank space... To my knowledge it may do this again. If it does, could any fellow AOL users let me know how to avert this problem? Ha, wouldn't that be the odd couple of the millenia. Anyway, Blind Melon did directly bash DT (saying that DT sucked) in a Guitar World interview sometime back. A few issues later they interviewed JP and he declined to bash back, only saying something to the effect that he was sorry BM was so closed minded, but everyone is etitled to their opinions. How humble! Now on to Yngwie- I love his music. He got me into studying the guitar and made me really want to impvrove my playing. So he's got a big mouth, I can live with that. I was wondering what kind of setups each of you played and how you came about playing them. I'm a guitarist in an upstart metal band, we only do covers for now, and I'm using an Ibanez RG450DX, and a Peavey Transtube 212 Special (200w). Of course DT had a hand in my selection of an Ibanez along with it's incredible neck, pickup configuration, and all around appearance (black). I'm also looking into processors. Any suggestions? Here's a list of the songs we're currently covering or working on: Creeping Death, Am I Evil, Fade to Black, Orion all by Metallica; Walk, Mouth For War, Cemetary Gates, from Pantera; Alexander the Great and Number of the Beast by Iron Maiden; and I'm trying to get them to cover Pull Me Under along with Another Day and Surrounded (those last two are a total mood swing!) Funny thing is, I had this exact same thought last night after I turned off my computer. I had just participated in an e-mail conversation with Elliott Kim about liking "other" music, you know, the kind of music that people think you are really weird for liking. Then, the thought popped in my head about how many people judge "other music" simply because of what the artist does outside of the recording studio. I try not to let the "antics" of groups enter my mind when I listen to them, though sometimes it is extremely hard to divorce the two (eg, whenever I hear Green Day, I think of Billie Joe spitting loogies into the bassist's mouth). Then again, those bands that usually get into trouble are not the bands that I look to for inspiration and lyrical wonderment, just the ones who pass the time while I am around people who's necessity for "musical" music is less than mine. >Frankly, Blind Melon has made some of the more interesting music that I've >heard in the last few years. My thoughts exactly. I'm not talking about "No Rain" -- which was a catchy little tune, but that's it -- I'm talking about the other more intricate pieces like "Tones of Home". What always makes me laugh is that I had bought their CD because of ToH and then heard NR, and when NR came out, all of these people in my HS were saying, "Listen to this great NEW band!" Uhh...sure, aside from the fact that this album has been out for over 6 months! Most of those people would never now that ToH and NR are by the same band except for the singer's voice. Well, I am just going to "come out of the closet" and say it. I still listen to those glam bands like Poison, Slaughter, Warrant, and Winger, just because their songs meant something to me and some point in time. They caught my attention, and it wasn't because of the make-up or the scantily-clad women or the fact that almost everyone and their mother listened to them, but because I liked them. Sure, they're no Dream Theater or Rush or even come close to any band of their magnitude, but they are sure a helluva lot better than a lot of the glam crap that was floating around back then. I think the two most important things that music does is convey a message or feeling, and provide the key to memories. Whenever I hear a song, it always triggers something that reminds me of where I first heard it, when, who I was with, or what happened surrounding that date. This then paves the way for the overall effect of music: to entertain, inform, or tell a story. And this story can be theirs (the artists') or yours. And that, my friends, is what music is all about. Nuno is just plain unbelievable.Amazing live, too.) 2)Living Colour (Wow. An extremely talented band with some incredible songs and on of the top 5 best all round guitarists [Vernon Reid] in the business. Check out "Sunshine of your Love" on the TRUE LIES soundtrack) 3)24-7 Spyz (Sound a lot like Living Colour. Guitarist Jimi Hazel is outstanding and fast as hell. These guys make transitions between fast metal riffs and soft jazz riffs as if it were nothing. Their album "Strength in Numbers" is one of my top 5 ever.) 4)Live (One of the most energetic and creative song writing bands to come along in a while. Also amazing in concert.) 5)Rage Against the Machine (Pure energy. Wow.) Honorable Mentions:Silverchair, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Shootyz Groove, Flesh, Hum, Weezer. (Some of these may be sort of sellout bands, but hey, I'm not afraid to admit I think some of these guys are talented songwriters and musicians(though nowhere near as talented as DT). Top 5 recently bought CD's:1)24-7 Spyz "Temporarily Disconnected" 2) Silverchair "Frogstomp" 3)DT "ACoS" 4)Shootyz Groove "Jammin' in a Vicious Environment" 5)Live "Four Songs" Sorry for the non-DT tangent. What I want to say is that I hope the material DT is writing is more like Awake and ACoS than IAW. The reason I like ACoS so much is that it has that much heavier, darker and angrier sound that Awake has opposed to IAW. I love the dark sounds of songs like Lie and The Mirror on Awake, while I find most songs on IAW to be more soft and keyboardy (excluding Pull Me Under). Don't get me wrong, I love IAW, but I think that musically, Awake and ACoS are just so much more stimulating. That is my humble opinion. Oh yeah, I can't tell you all how many times I have sat in front of my CD player and rewound the guitar riff in ACoS around 11:?? and 12:?? (it repeats twice, once with a keyboard solo and a minute later with a guitar solo) again and again. I love it. Yes it's time to shut up now. Keep up the good work YTSE-Jam. Message-ID: One day a couple of years ago, I was browsing through some guitar magazine in my vain attempt to become "guitar literate." I think Blind Melon was on the cover. In any case, this magazine had a section where the magazine would play some songs by different bands for the featured band/artist to evaluate. One of the songs they played for Blind Melon was PMU. I remember them saying "Is this a hair band?" and then ripping on DT. I would love it if someone that has the magazine I'm talking about could retype it on the list. It's definitely good for a laugh. Later, when Black Sabbath's tribute album was coming out, Metal Edge (my favorite magazine) was doing a thing where they had different people telling how much of an influence Black Sabbath was and is to music. One of the guys they asked was our own Mike P., who said something to the effect of "Black Sabbath is the reason that everybody doesn't sound like Blind Melon." They also bashed Petrucci directly by saying something to the effect of "...I bet the guitar player's rack has more lights than a Christmas tree...". It didn't stop there... I think (if I remember correctly) that they criticized DT for their technical prowess in an attempt to justify their own musical iniquities. Dream Theater was not the only band that they bashed for similar reasons in that interview. I'm going to look for that Magazine and find out which issue it was in and I'll post it for anyone who might have overlooked it. Ever since I read that article, I had lost any respect that I might have had for them, and believe you me... it wasn't much. I can't tell you what to do, but I would strongly encourage you to boycott them, not solely on the merit of what they said about DT, but for their total lack of respect for their fellow musicians.
