Message-ID: The quote "mi lengua...." is from the Steve Vai album, "Passion and Warfare". At the time, Steve was in Whitesnake and he wanted the guys to appear on the album in one way or another. So he carried around a DAT machine and asked Rudy Sarzo (the one who said the quote) to say something in Spanish. so, that was the first thing that came to his mind. It means "My toungue, My tounge(something) of my mouth" I can't remember the middle part, but you get the idea. Sorry that this is a non DT post, but I thought the parties involved might be interested. A new DT bootleg has surfaced. It was recorded in Japan. It is a video that was recorded right after the earthquake occured that the band mentions in the liner of acos. During the concert, James requests 15 seconds of silence for the earthquake victims. After 15 seconds, the band starts right into "Silent Man". Very, very cool. It was broadcast over Japanese TV and is professionally shot. The set list is the same as the "Awake" tour in the U.S. Alas, I have yet to see this tape, my best friend called me last night about the big news. I can't wait to see it. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 4 Oct 1995 14:55:15 -0400 (EDT) From: Stephen Bajzek To: Multiple recipients of list Subject: Re: 7 STRING ACCOUSTIC Message-ID: >So guys, what's your favorite Dream theater solo? I've got some news on Damn The Machine. Althought it's not fresh, I would like to post it anyway for all you DTM fans out there. In a metal magazine here in Holland (it's called Aardschok, simply 'Earthshake' in Dutch) in issue 6 (June 1995) I read the following news that Chris Poland got a new band together called MUMBO'S TRAIN (Damn The Machine was a much better name, anyway). This band also features Chris' brother Mark on drums and Dave Randy on bass. So this is really DTM without singer/guitarist Dave Clemmons. Hopefully they will get a much better singer. If you checked this CD out (if it's already out) just put it on the list. Everytime he got a new album from some band I have never heard of he would say,"Dude...Ya gotta check out this new CD from this cool band!", and I would fall prey to some good and bad stuff. One day we were goin' to the beach to meet up with some friends and hang out (Seaside Hights for those who know New Jersey) and he had this new cd from a band called...well...you know. From the SECOND Pull me under started I FREAKED! It was awsome and it was the only CD i heard for like 2 months!! I was a radio jock for a local college and played them all the time too! The rest of the album removes the thinly F>veiled attempts at creativity with covers of such incredible artists as F>Kansas, Depp Purple, and Journey. It wasnt an attack at the entire genre, at least not historically. What he says is that DT is not doing anything that hasnt been done before, ie classic progressive bands have done similar things for a while. Jason is saying that the progressive music should be a closed set. I do disagree with this, I find the current prog-ish stuff by DT, Yes, Marillion, ect incredible. Anyways, he calls Kansas, Deep Purple and Journey "incredible artists", though this may not be entirely meant as complimentary... > is coming from). What I fail to understand is the relevance of the artwork > and photography to the quality of an album. The artwork hasnt a thing to do with how the album sounds. He is using the artwork to give more insight on DT, he calls them "unfathomably pretentious" and uses the artwork to try to defend this. Anyways, its not like he dwells on the artwork... I mean there have been plenty of discussions of the artwork here on the 'jam... not to imply that its the same thing... > He blames them for being able to play their instruments? FICKETT WROTE: F>Admittedly, all of the members of DT know how to play their instruments, F>and they do neat tricks with tempo, scales, and all that shit. But the I dont read this as attacking DT for being good musicians. He grants that the members of DT can play very well, tempo changes, ect. He just doesn't like the "end result", as quoted above. > Well, I hope one day Fickett writes a shitty > review of me; that way I'll know that I'm putting out quality stuff. In > short, I don't take him seriously, because his writing is a joke. Just my > opinion. To conclude, I think that it was good that he reviewed the album at all, as opposed to ignoring it completely, for that reason. No matter how negative of a review it was, it let people know that DT had a new album out. Rain King wrote on this basic topic, so I will conclude with this. If the person who wrote the review of the Fates Warning albums had said the same basic things about _Perfect Symmetry_ but saying that this turned him off, I would probabaly still want to run out and buy the album... Anyways, I promise to stop going on about this topic, and to stop talking about James on the covers, as long as there's nothing really new added to the conversation, I'm sure that I've taken up quite enuff bandwidth... to Chris DiGiuseppe , I tried to send the bad review to the above address, but it got returned, so if you don't get any other copies of the review, contact me and we'll try to find some other way if you want a copy of the infamous review... I've been getting ytsejam since last semester but this is my first post to the list. I absolutely love this place. I guess I first got into DT when my friend lent me I&W. I was huge into Rush then and he said that they were like Rush on crack, so I gave it a try and ever since I've been huge fan. I know ACOS came out like two weeks ago but I want to my $.02 about it. My first impression of it was that it was a masterpiece. But after listening to it A LOT I liked parts on Subcon a lot better (namely The Crimson Sunset; gotta love DON'T GO!!) But the riff at 18:36 makes up for that and the missing "PLEASE DON'T GO!" at the end of Carpe Diem! Derek Sherinian is no Kevin Moore but the solo toward the end of ACOS was so Moore-esque that everything is gonna be alright for DT. When Kevin Moore left, I thought that DT will never be the same but now I think that we will not be dissapointed with him. The "Uncovered" songs are great especially "Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding." The Zep Medley was also good but I didn't like James' Robert Plant impersonation but Steve Perry should watch out. Now for some non-DT content (SORRY!) About the person who said that if "Afraid of Sunlight" is an good example of what Marillion is like: I didn't like "Afraid of Sunlight" too much but their stuff with Fish, their original lead singer, just rules!! "Misplaced Childhood is one of my favorite albums. "Clutching at Straws" is pretty good but I haven't really listened to it yet. "Fugazi" IMHO is horrible except for "Assassing", which is only alright. Their B-sides album "B-Sides Themselves" is really cool especially "Grendel." I haven't heard their first album (I forgot the name of it) nor the live albums. Fish left after "Clutching at Straws" and along came Steve Hogarth, their current front man. I haven't heard the first album with him, "Season's End." I do not like "Holidays in Eden" except for "Cover My Eyes," which was a catchy pop song, like the rest of the album, unlike the progressive style they had with Fish. "Brave" was an excellent album, though. The album IMHO is very "The Wall"-esque in nature. Then came "Afraid in Sunlight" which goes back to the pop album type thing. Basically, after all this babbling, "Afraid of Sunlight" is not a good example of their music. Well, I have wasted enough space here. BTW, is there anyone interested in going to the Dec 28 DT concert at Malibu in Long Island (it would be easier if you are from LI) with my friend and I. If you are just e-mail me back and we'll see what happens! Well gotta go. BTW, if you see something like uni-blah.de, it's an university in a German city named blah. Look at my address, then you know what I'm doing, or at least what I should do at this moment... - To the ones who didn't hear the bass on Awake but on ACOS: Last week I heard Awake on my nearly 15 years old mono TV-radio-cassette-combination and even then it WAS there. You just have to listen. It's a really low end bass. On ACOS it was more audible, because they used a clearer bass sound, but this way they had to sacrifice most of the big deep guitar-crunch we got on Awake. Awake got a wider frequency bandwidth, with this soft, deep bass on the very low frequencies, leaving more space for a fat sounding guitar. I think it's this bandwidth that makes the sound of Awake so HUGE. And think of John Myung himself. He's really a team player who stays in the background while still playing a big role in the whole thing. Although I usually love to hear the bass, the Awake-production reflects this character perfectly. Whoops... didn't want to restart this really old thread, so if you want to reply to this, mail me. Well... just another post that did contain ACOS-related stuff. Since someone is already analyzing the 'Awake' lyrics inside and out, I figured I should raise the debate of who's the better lyricist, Kevin or John. IMHO, I think Kevin was the better lyricist. I particularly dig his contributions on 'Awake'. His lyrics seem to create such intense imagery, like the references to Hell in "Lie" and his sources for inspiration for those songs. I really dug how he came up with "Space-Dye Vest" and I think the song is a fitting end to his tenure with DT. I think Kevin's lyricism will be missed most, as Derek Shirinian has picked up the slack quite well on the keys. I wonder if Derek will be as competent on the compositional aspect of the band, aas well? I also wonder if Mike and John Myung are going to have to pick up the slack, lyrically, as well as James?
