Let's see, random thoughts... Someone had a part from "To Live Forever" in their tag. The lyrics aren't written out anywhere, but I'm pretty sure that those lines are "Until I show desire for revenge, my hunger will wax me to sleep." That is LaBrie's rendering. Earlier versions have it as "waste me to sleep" instead of "wax," but that's part of LaBrie's style. And yes they were thrown on for filler. ACoS has been played more than twice. As far as I know ACoS was played live during the I&W tour, Januari & Februari 1993, in Europe. Since I read my mail once or twice a week, because I work on location for a customer of our company, I am hopelessly behind reading all the stuff you guys send in. But It#s something I can live with. BTW I am located in The Netherlands and my copy number of Subconscious is #453. The second Instrumental demo has been released here last week. I#ve ordered my copy at a mailing service and hope to receive it very quick. So you guys who keep saying that it#s a big DT month, because of two releases, overhere it#s even bigger with three. Well, I went to see them last Monday. The band is actually "On the Virg", featuring the drummer Virgil Donati (anyone heard of him outside Australia?). He is by far the greatest drummer in Australia, and one of the best in the world. The bass player, Evripides Evripedou (or something like that) was a classical guitar player, who now plays six string bass. Now please don't get me wrong, I am a bass player, and a huge DT fan, but this guy plays rings around Myung. The band usually does a set of their original stuff, which is full on fusion. They are a four piece band, drums, bass, guitar and keys. For their second set, they get a guy named Andrew Grant (who I used to play with) to sing. His voice is much stronger than James' voice is live, especially in the higher register, but he doesn't have that rich vibrato that makes James' voice so unique. Anyway, no promises but I will try to get a tape of the gig, or one of the future gigs, if anyone is interested. Well, it's not much of a story, really. I first started listening to hard music with Strypers 'To Hell with the Devil'. A friend of mine was also a Stryper-fan, but he also had some cool music, called instru-metal. In those days, Tony MacAlpine had just released his sophomore album 'Maximum Security' and Vinnie Moore came with 'Time Odyssey'. Then I heard Queensryche for the first time with 'Operation: Mindcrime' and I instantly became a Queensryche-fan. A year later a new band appeared, called Dream Theater. Their debut album, 'When Dream and Day Unite' became my friends favorite album. I didn't listen to it much until the CD was on sale a few years later. Only then I got really hooked on DT. When I heard that the singer had left the band, I thought they had split up. But then came 'Images and Words' and I immediately fell in love with James' voice. Until now I have never heard a band that sounds better than Dream Theater. Well, that's it. By the way, there's also a lot of cool Christian music lately, with bands like King James, Saviour Machine and Torman Maxt. If you're interested in these great bands, send me your snail-mail address and I'll send you a tape. That's it for now. Later! Wietze. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 Sep 1995 07:51:33 -0500 (EST) From: email_address_removed To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: YTSEJAM digest 980 Message-ID: It's MERCY, *not* MASSIVE. I take it you don't have a copy of Kevin's demos? :) Kevin IS playing bass on his new demos, but Rich Kern and he parted ways several months ago. Even just "songs" have a structure that hold them together, so I don't think anyone needs to be turned off by terms like "development" or "statement of theme". They are just standard concepts for creating more complex pieces of music than pop songs (and I think we all agree ACOS is not destined to be a "hit single"). I'd like to see Dream Theater become more mature in these types of things as well.
